The Cistercian Monastery of Carta
🔴 The Cistercian Monastery of Carta was a Cistercian monastic settlement in Făgăraș County, founded by 13 Cistercian monks (monastic order originating in France). It currently houses the evangelical church of the local German community.
There were two such monasteries in the Medieval Kingdom of Hungary. In addition to the one from Cârța, there was an older one, Abația Igriș. Both were destroyed during the first Mongol invasion of Hungary, but only the one at Cârța was rebuilt.
The establishment of the monastery from Cârța was dated approximately around 1202, in any case during the reign of King Emeric. Later, King Andrew II of Hungary provided certain privileges for this settlement.
King Matthias Corvinus abolished the monastery on February 27, 1474, when he came into conflict with the last abbot and took possession of the abbey. It manages to escape only one, known to have been found in 1509 serving the Hermitage "St. Catherine" in Brasov. The abbey of Cârţa was the easternmost of the Cistercian abbeys and was taken over by the evangelicals in 1550. The abolition of the monastery was made to suppress the Wallachian influence in the region.
The Cistercian monastery Cârța played a major role both in the political, economic, and cultural history of medieval Transylvania and in the introduction and dissemination of Gothic art in the intra-Carpathian space.
An old legend says that under the altar leave a subterranean corridor that led to the bank of Olt. There, the Cistercians had boats ready in case they had to flee. The main enemies were the Tartars, the Turks, and even the Romanians from Arpaşu de Jos, who set them on fire once.
In the eastern part of the monastery, that is, under the Chapter Hall, were found five skeletons belonging to the abbots of the order, who were buried here. They wore rings with their seals on their hands, so it was found that each of them had once been an abbot. All had 2 meters and above this height. No one can explain the height of the abbots of the order, people who did not taste meat, fasted most of the year. They had all cells and slept in a room on the straw. Because of their austere life, they lived only 35-40 years and were buried in the Abbey.
Witnesses to the paranormal phenomena at this monastery claim that on the ground floor and in the cellars, the chairs move and the walls tremble. However, like many other legends in Romania, there is no clear evidence of these incidents.
