The Church - Under The Milky Way

Музыка

The Church - Under The Milky Way
Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty,
Sound of their breath fades with the light.
I think about the loveless fascination,
Under the milky way tonight.
Lower the curtain down in memphis,
Lower the curtain down all right.
I got no time for private consultation,
Under the milky way tonight.
Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.
Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.
And its something quite peculiar,
Something thats shimmering and white.
Leads you here despite your destination,
Under the milky way tonight
Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.
Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.
Under the milky way tonight.

I wonder if a band, when making a song such as this, knows that it will transcend throughout the decades of time and be important generation after generation? I suppose not, but I'm sure happy songs like this exist.

This song is bitter sweet for me, back in my mid teens I'd listen to this and other great songs on an old AMFM transister radio in my room at night, trying to block out the shouting and bullshit going on in the house, if it wasn't for being able too immerse myself in the music.. God knows.. I'm now 53yrs old, and this music still makes me cry, my life is so much better now, and it just reminds me of how far I've come, my lovely wife, we met late in life, no kids of our own, but her grandchildren are wonderful, and I'd never let them experience what I went through, The 1980s music is the greatest for me, but times change, and music moves on, I hope the music of today, has that kind of impact on today's youth. Love life, It's shorter than you think.

My friends were on a camping trip and we had an 80s/90’s playlist on a Bluetooth speaker, just enjoying the vibe. Right before everyone went to bed we looked up from the fire and all the stars were out, and sure enough, above us we could clearly see the Milky Way. The sparks from the fire were dancing through the air like fireflies. And right then, this song came on. The moment and the song matched up perfectly. Life just feels like a movie sometimes. So grateful for these moments that remind us life isn’t all bad.

Mainstream music dosen't generally have this, but there is still good music and good bands/artists out there, you just have to know where to look and also explore. The Church are one of the legendary leaders of keeping this sound and music alive. They have over 25 albums of amazing and varied sounds, (Dreamy, psychadelia, dark, acoustic, post punk/post modern rock (Circa. late 1980's MTV & 120 minutes) Indie, singer/songwriter and so much more... Some songs so familiar to this, and creative/story telling element by Steve Kilby is stage front, with The Church and his side projects like Kilbey/Kennedy... And though The Church's line-up has changed over the years, today they are literally comprised like a supergroup of amazing musicians from other legit bands with Steve still on vocals. What's not to enjoy?

If there was a list for the top 10 Australian songs ever, this would be No. 1 !....always reminds me of my father who separated from my mum and my little brother, when I was 4 and then no contact at all for 20 years, until I finally met him again in Sydney in May 1986 (the same month my mother passed away from stomach cancer at 49) All that time, from when he left us, he lived the rest of life in Australia - never married again and no more kids, basically wandering around the country, with various jobs and businesses, even prospecting in the outback on his own. I got to know him a little better in the last 20 years when he retired to Whyalla, South Australia, until he passed away at 86 in early 2019. I did a few visits there and this song would always be playing, driving between Whyalla and Adelaide to catch an early plane, while I would gaze out up into the sky at the reddish, gold sunrise, over that expansive land that seemed to go on forever, wondering how it might have or have not of been ?

And yes, like you I marveled at that red gold sunrise as I drove. Would have been in the years 87 to 93. Iron Triange memories. Red dust days. Wish I could go back again. I rolled the dice so many times back then and always won. We all wonder what might have been. Life is a rolling dice of decisions. Take care mate.

It's hard to believe that the '80's, were 40 years ago, going back through 1980! It makes me feel old, every time that I think about it! I was in the 3rd Grade, just when this song was on the charts! Regardless, I still love the '80's! It's hard to believe that I just turned 42, on January 31st! Thankfully, I don't have too much gray hair!

I know they're from Australia but for me it reminds me of southern California especially surfing my home town of San Clemente. The sun getting low turning the water gold, orange, redish. Just thinking about the day...

This song reminds me of a dark time in my life. Being high, using Heroine, this song playing in my headphones, wondering in my Dad's back garden, in the dark AM hours. I'd close my eyes and sink into this song. I'll never return to those days, but this song makes my soul ache a little, because I remember how I felt.

If you have never done it before, on a clear cloudless (preferably moonless too) night leave town and keep driving. Once you are about an hour past the closest town on the outskirts feeling like you are in the middle of nowhere, get out of your car lie on the ground and stare into space. See the milky way for what it is without light and sound pollution ruining the experience. The first time i did it was in 2015 and i never forgot it, it was like i was inside a snow globe and could almost reach out and touch the stars.

I recall hearing this song shortly after my then-girlfriend and I made love for the first time, and it seemed so perfect, even prophetic after what had just happened between us. At any rate, we've been happily married for 30 years this past August, so it must've augured well for us! ROCK ON, fellow "Boomers!"

One of the joys of getting old, and there aren't many, is seeing and hearing your record collection being discovered and enjoyed by new generations - whether used in adverts or by filmmakers. Nostalgia at its best... so many memories both old and new.

don't agree at all that there aren't many joys to getting old. put exercise and nutrition first and you'll thrive. all that life experience should have you feeling more at peace with yourself, and your perception of the world, than you ever have been in the past.
