The early proof of Marty Wilson-Piper and Peter Koppes' dual-guitar brilliance - one of the best pairings I've ever known - and all that it would become as they kept getting better and better with experience, until lo and behold they reached their peak with Priest=Aura, IMO. It's wonderful to see this with Richard Ploog on drums, and the towering presence of Steve Kilbey and all that his songwriting genius would bring forth in the years to come - what a great band. I absolutely love these guys.

I saw JD in 1980, and totally different . Adrian B used to charge around the stage like that bloke from Future Islands does now. Did you know that Goths claim that both the Sound and the Church were Goth bands . Hilarious the Sound were classic "New wave", and the Church a neo 1960's Guitar band a la Byrds.

The only track that doesn't quite live up to the studio recording is Just For You. This footage conforms what a live powerhouse Richard Ploog was. Peter's lead guitar relatively low in the mix.

Wow, mind blowing! This brings back some memories! I recall attending this exact triple-bill at the old Earls Court in St Kilda, along with the ex-GF and a few friends (Ollie, were you there? I think so). Pretty sure The Runners were the opening act, The Church in the middle and Moving Pictures were headlining on the back of their monster hit "What about me?". As you can tell from the audience reaction, "Unguarded Moment" was pretty much the only track that was well known, and perhaps a few had picked up on "Almost with you", which I think was the first single off Blurred Crusade. We Church die-hards knew the lot, of course! I remember sweating a great deal... Congrats on finding this gem and thanks for uploading it!

My first experience was in 1991 (?) - The Church headlines with the UKs The Blue Aeroplanes (the band I knew and was craving to see). I had never heard of The Church. That show was at The Orpheum Theater in Boston and we were late. I MISSED the blue aeroplanes. Hell sake. We walked up to the venue and I was blasted (unbeknownst to me) with REPTILE. It painted the city streets in reverb and delay. Mind completely melts. The rest is history. I'm still here and never leaving. Just secured my tickets to see them revisit the city for Hypnogogue.

I agree Octavian. It looks to be more than just an amateur recording given the different camera angles. I would happily pay for a copy, especially if the lads got some of the money.

Ah. The beautiful old days. Back when people got into the music of a concert, were in an "unguarded moment" if you will, rather than sticking distracting cell phones in the air trying to make a shitty recording of the best rock band in the world, a recording that they will never be able to watch & fully appreciate because it won't come close to the live experience of this band. Now. Back to the show.

Wow! Thanks for posting this! The first time I saw them play was in Amsterdam, 1988. It was ridiculously loud and Steve had to shout instead of sing. A real disappointment. In the 90s I saw them play a couple of small venues in Holland several times and they were much better then. Unfortunately they always seemed to refuse to play any 'oldies' off the first 2 albums. So, it's great to see this. Amazing quality and plenty of old favorites! Those guitars...

I literally imagined this yesterday!!! Thought how good would it be to see something from the old days. And then this!!! My first Church gig. Hordern Pavillion 1982. I think March, I may have the ticket stub. Part of their Blurred Crusade tour. The supported a band called Moving Pictures that were huge for 15 minutes. We left after the Church, lol!!! Electric Lash was the new song, I thought it was called Electric Blush at the time. Thank you for this and I sincerely hope you have more, Heyday tour anyone??

Ploog. Amazing , and at peak here on Is This Where You Live? In January ‘22 in solo gig in Melbourne where he played Of Skins and Blurred, Kilby said Bob Clearmountain (check CV) was top rock producer in world in ‘81, and chose them over many others to work with. Flew into Sydney, and did nothing much for first two weeks but worked with Ploog to nail drum sound for this record.
