The Chrysler 300 Needs to Die, a Love Story | 2020 Chrysler 300 Limited Full Tour & Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How long can you sell the same car before people realize it's not new anymore? That's the story of the Chrysler 300, a car that has remained on the same platform since 2011, and essentially unchanged since 2015.
PRN T-Shirts now available! Check out our original designs here: teespring.com/stores/prn
This week's episode of TestDrive Spotlight is on the 2020 Chrysler 300 Limited AWD. Yes, that's correct, this is a 2020 model year for a car that has only seen paint and rim choice changes since 2018, and the last major facelift in 2015. The Chrysler 300 really dates back to 2004 when the first generation of Chrysler LX vehicles launched, and has remained on their fleet since. We go over why the Chrysler 300 is still being sold, and what we think FCA should do if they want to reinvent both this nameplate and their namesake brand at the same time.
On our full tour and review of this 2020 Chrysler 300 Limited AWD we go over some sales information for other LX platform vehicles including the Charger and Challenger, what parts were borrowed from Mercedes-Benz for those original LX vehicles, and how the Chrysler 300 did in 2019 for US car sales compared with the competition. We then discuss some ways this vehicle could have easily been modernized over the past years, and discuss a lot of the faults it has because it never got those updates.
We then take the 2020 Chrysler 300 Limited on a road test to talk about how this full-size sedan performs and handles on the road, including our thoughts on the 3.6L Pentastar V6, all-wheel drive, 8-speed automatic transmission, and the suspension. We also go over some of the ways the impending Groupe PSA & FCA merger could benefit the Chrysler vehicle lineup, and what we would suggest happen to this vehicle if were were in charge of development.
We wrap up with our final thoughts on this vehicle for those thinking of buying a 2020 Chrysler 300 new, or those thinking of getting one in the used market.

Honestly the looks are iconic. Even now, there is nothing in class that competes with it. What can they do to it? Sure give it LEDs, that is a no brainer. And then look at the past. The great Lincolns and Town Cars and Caddy Fleetwoods of 70s and 80s. Give us old school luxury without changing exterior or platform. that mean fine genuine leather. Can you imagine what a tufted CORINTHIAN leather interior with red and blue and black can do for this interior? Replace that miserable transmission shift knob for a proper shift gear. In the 2005 model they had wood steering wheel (top part) and shift lever, give us that again. With matching walnut interior. Perhaps even wire wheels. There will be nothing in the market that can compete. There are still older people and even cool younger people that love those old grand American chariots. Give us that Chrysler. And finally put HEMI as an option back in.

The cup holder cover also used to come in wood on the pre-facelift models. There was some cost-cutting involved with the 2014 update. There's so much potential for the future of this car, it just needs a team dedicated to it, which doesn't seem to be the case right now at FCA.

The 300 is a bargain when you factor in that no one is paying anywhere close to MSRP for these things. Base prices in the US start around the low 30s and the can be had in the low 20s all day.

That’s always the case with FCA, they have heavy incentives on these to bring the actual price down quite a bit. Right now Chrysler Canada has $3,989.00 in discounts on this specific build as of 7am on the 13th of July. Not the largest discount on earth, but it’s some of the flexibility in pricing.

I bought a 2005 300c in August of 2004, drove it for 15 years, loved it but with the threat of discontinuing it I bought a 2019 300C. There are many changes in the 2019, I got both cars loaded. When I see a 2005 300c, I still think of these as a classic and in the future it will be a collectible. There are lots of clubs with that objective. I'm more than satisfied.

Nile, I enjoyed the review. There are many, many things one can fault about this 300. However, one thing it still does well is comfort. I once sat in a 300 in a showroom, and thought this is one of the most comfortable modern cars; the seats are unusually plush. The lack of the latest technology may not bother some of its target audience, but it will impede the popularity of the 300. Unfortunately, I think Chrysler has let the goodwill of the 300 model wane. It was once a sort-of-cool "budget Bentley", an distinct alternative to more reserved sedan offerings. Now, I think its still a nice car, but is heading toward the faint praise of "Hey, that's a pretty cool rental car!" - i.e., a decent car, but not one you would buy yourself (at least not a new one). I always thought the 2nd generation model lacked the charm of the 1st generation. If Chrysler keeps the 300 alive, it would be nice to see it try to revive its swagger. There really are very few relatively affordable full size sedans left. I think the Taurus, and Impala are gone, and the Continental is cancelled.

There's definitely potential for this down the road if they actually spend some time creating a new generation. I'd buy a first gen 300 in a heartbeat, and even looked at them before I bought my 7 Series years ago. Finding a clean one is tough though, I find a lot of them out here have really bad rust issues, but a white one in mint condition would be a fantastic buy!

I'd go for a Charger R/T also, considering the Chrysler 300 doesn't ride any different than the Charger. If Chrysler invested in actual luxury technologies like an air ride or adaptive suspension, mixed with better NVH control then the 300 would make more sense in the marketplace. Unfortunately it's a Charger with an Audi-like exterior design.

  • @TheBjjones

    @TheBjjones

@@PRNTestDrive Actually, the 300 *does* ride different than a Charger, specifically if it's a R/T Scat Pack model, as the ride quality is much harsher unless one adds the $995 optional adaptive suspension along with the $2295 Dynamics Package (adaptive suspension is standard on Scat Pack Wide body). Also, when it comes to interior noise for daily driving, the 300 will be much quieter as well, especially considering the Scat Pack has a much louder exhaust system.

Three biggest issues with this vehicle: Powertrain, Interior, Creature Comforts. The 3.6 is dated at this point, and even though it makes good power, it lacks the torque this desperately needs. As a base engine, the 2.0T would just make more sense, since it makes 295lb-ft of torque peak at low rpms vs the 3.6 that makes 260 peak at over 4000rpm. For the Hemi, the only thing they need to do is ditch RWD only, and make it AWD standard. This isn't a drag car or performance car, AWD is what sells in this segment. For the interior, FCA is responsible for the RAM 1500's interior, they could make something great in here too. Enough said. For creature comforts, once again just look at RAM (and soon to be jeep). When that kind of tech is available within the company, there's no excuse. As for the Chrysler brand, they need a new 200 based on the Alfa Romeo platform. One engine choice, the 2.0 turbo, and in the same segment as the camry and accord. It would be the ONLY RWD based option in the segment. I would say Chrysler needs a crossover, but Jeep is also taking on the role of luxury SUV's whenever they redesign the Grand Cherokee. They are going to need a replacement for the Journey as a street focused midsize crossover, maybe Chrysler has an ace up their sleeve, especially since Chrysler dealers are hurting right now due to the 2.5 model limit (the grand caravan was moved to Chrysler as the voyager) Dodge simply needs to make a new cuda based on the alfa platform, a compact 4 seater coupe with the 2.4 base, 2.0 turbo for sport and the 5.7 for the SRT trim, and a compact crossover with the same engine choices. This would give them the more entry/volume models their brand desperately needs. RAM does well and doesn't need new models, but a RAM 500, especially if they offered it with a reg cab and 8 foot bed on the low end, would only reinforce the "RAM is the working mans truck" image, while giving them a cheap luxury option, as a 500 limited could blow the Canyon Denali and Ranger Lariat out of the water. Jeep just needs to hurry up and release the new Grand Cherokee, as well as the (Grand) Wagoneer. But I think Jeep is waiting on that new 3.0 straight 6 turbo for some reason, even though the past 16 years of grand cherokee is famous for hemi's.

  • @PRNTestDrive

A return of a GOOD Chrysler 200 would be in the company's best interest, I agree on the platform choice. I've seen some speculation that the Journey will end up making it's way to the Chrysler brand with a new generation and a name change, and the other speculations I've read about have to do with the Groupe PSA merger allowing Chrysler to sell Peugeot's under their brand, which Chrysler Group is all too familiar with. A RAM 1500-level interior on a Chrysler 300 would be incredibly good, the Laramie Long Horn is probably one of the nicest non-luxury interiors on the market right now. There's a lot of potential for all the American FCA brands if they take the right steps to make it happen.

Because the interior colors choices are uninviting I cant buy one. They used to have nice wood grain, now its boring black. Used to have nice tan seats, now they're black or worse, white. Good luck finding a dash other than black and wood grain like they used to (Audi - Mercedes). Make the interior look less boring and they will sell. Who thought up the present color choices? It's like they're saying, "dont buy this and if you do you'll make us laugh", all the way to the bank. Lose the harsh riding 20" wheels and bring back 18"s. Bolster the seats and make them 2" wider. Arm rest is too high, I have to open it to have my arm and shoulder not get tired. The rest is fine. FCA doesn't care and it shows. Seems like 2014 was the final year anyone had decent color choices. Last year there was this horrid puke green. Who buys that? No wonder its failing. FCA is doing it wrong. Then again Fiat is a kiddy car maker.
