The Chosen Explained S1/E1 - Things You May Have Missed

**N.B. At one point in the video, I mention that Mary Magdalene is a prostitute. Given the setting depicted in the show, I sensed that they were portraying this traditional view of Mary Magdalene (Lilith). Since then, I've learned that this wasn't necessarily the intention of the creators, and their focus was more on the fact that she had been possessed by demons.
In either case, the point I want to make in the video is how Jesus not only frees her from this possession, but redeems her completely. There are moments where Mary is treated like an object and outcast by other characters in the show. Jesus shows her that she is so much more than that. She is a child of God.
Thank you to those who helped point this out.
"The Chosen" is a new series about the disciples of Jesus that has exploded around the globe. As of the time of this record, the series has been viewed over 73 million times!
And while each episode may appear to simply tell the stories held in the Bible, there is an incredible amount of historical and theological detail that might slip by the untrained eye.
In this video, I'm going to break down four scenes from the first episode of season 1, highlighting some details that will not only change the way you view the episode, they might also cause you to see and interpret scripture in an entirely new light.
Thanks for watching!

It’s a lot less funny from “a Matthew’s”point of view. Imagine going thru life trying to gain a feel for the mood of a room or situation, that everyone else can almost instantaneously know; not realizing that someone else is furious with you before they’re unleashing anger on you, while coping with all the sensory input without being able to relegate any of it to background noise. It’s not difficult to see why he’s become a tax collector; since experience probably taught him early that he may never have those easy connections that those around him so obviously enjoy, and would always know that feeling of being an “outsider” , he may as well use his gifts in life to do a job that would at least keep him physically comfortable and give him enough power to make some decisions at times. About Mary Magdalene’s character: I think it’s grossly unfair to say that she was a prostitute, and a strange departure from the compassion with which you discuss characters so far. There’s actually nothing that I can find in the scriptures to support relegating her to the worlds oldest profession. She’s said to be oppressed of a demon (or something very close to that). It would be very easy to argue this to mean that she lived with the terrible burden of mental illness. This would leave her vulnerable to others’ abuse-possibly even rape, but the two concepts are far removed from one another. The Scriptures have very clear ways of stating that somebody worked in prostitution, and imho, this description doesn’t hit that particular mark. The fact that a man in a bar scene, which was purely artistic licence, had intent to impose himself on her, until he saw that she had a friend who might defend her, in no way makes her a prostitute either. If you doubt this, consider an informal survey among your female friends, as to whether any have ever had a man try to take her from a party or have ever known a friend to be “rufied” during an innocent night out dancing. Predators have always existed , and they have always known to hunt the least protected.

My favorite scene is Nicodemus. When the bible started making sense to me, he described what exactly I felt; fear and wonder. Nicodemus not accepting Jesus invitation of following Him was heart wrenching...specially when Jesus said, "You came so close". That was a heart wrenching scene.

@@anettebianca6855 if one member of a family comes unto Christ, it always leads to blessings unknown for the whole family. Part of the 10fold blessing promised to those who heed the call. That being said, I know how difficult it is for someone to risk your relationship with your family. I know. I did. New Christians do not have the faith to help strengthen their resolve. You and I need to be their for them explaining the precepts and promises given to them to help them trust. Nicodemus did not reject Christ. But he chose to stay with his wife. Also this is not even scriptural. Read John chapter 3 and you will see where the artistic license is at. If Nicodemus followed along with the group of disciples he would not have been there to defend Jesus to the rest of the Sanhedrin. Also would he still had the financial means to provide the spices and oil needed to prepare Jesus' body according to the law. See John 19:39....

😊 When the DVDs and study guides for seasons 1 & 2 came out, I purchased them and facilitated classes at our church. Before the first class, I suggested to the ladies to watch the episode 1. At the class, a couple of the ladies said it was hard to get into and didn’t watch it all. I told them, “Watch it until Jesus comes.” One of them did and was hooked. That scene when Jesus touches Mary’s hand, there is such an indescribable feeling of peace. Since then, my students have become The Chosen junkies watching the episodes multiple times. We can hardly wait for the season 3 DVDs to come out so we can continue watching them together each week.

Not to be afraid to teach them Biblical, sound Truth! Just as Jesus taught in the Chosen, with understanding. I love how Jesus speaks to the children or my favorite scene of JESUS healing the Leper. He couldn't be touched ir loved on by neighbors or Family. Shunned and forced to live alone. Here comes JESUS. He not only heals the man but TOUCHES AND EMBRACES. This scene as well as Mary Magdalene, just melts my heart. I cry to see The True Compassion of Christ. The compassion the moved Him to heal and deliver all who came and believed. No other movie or show of JESUS ever showed that. I love this.

The scenes with Lilith from Season 1 Episode 1, from when Jesus places His hand on hers to the part where he calls her by her real name...these are the most profound for me. The commentator states…“Upon you (Peter) I will build my church.” This is a Catholic view relating to Papal succession however, It’s Peters confession NOT Peter that is the focus. “If we were to go beyond Peter’s lifetime, and consider the writings of the church fathers from Origen to Chrysostom to Augustine - we would likewise find that the vast majority of ancient interpreters did not view the rock in Matthew 16:18 as a reference to Peter. The church fathers generally understood the “rock” to refer either to the apostles collectively, or to the specific content of Peter’s confession. In either case, they understood that Matthew 16:18 ultimately centered on Christ - the One to whom the apostles testified, and the One to whom Peter’s confession pointed.

I was so excited to find this commentary... just about ready to spread the word to my family and friends... until 18:54 on Season 1 Episode 1 (not my first; I went out of order) when you referred to Mary Magdalene as a prostitute. That assumption was erroneously made by Pope Gregory I after “combining” several “Mary’s” in the Bible (and for other reasons) but later corrected by Pope Paul VI. All other commentary was very helpful...so I will still spread the word with just one caveat. :) (I also enjoy Dallas’s commentaries, as well. Can’t seem to get enough of The Chosen.)Thanks and God bless you. Elizabeth

Hi Liz. I’m sorry for the confusion that moment has caused. I definitely don’t mean to suggest that my view is that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. My commentary was based on how I perceived the portrayal of this in The Chosen (the area in which she lived, the people around her, the way other characters treat her). I apologize for how it came across.
