The Choice 2020: Yusef Salaam (interview) | FRONTLINE
Yusef Salaam was falsely accused of rape and assault of a jogger in Central Park in 1989 in what has become known as the “Central Park Five” case. He was exonerated in 2002 and is now an activist and motivational speaker.
The following interview was conducted by FRONTLINE’s Gabrielle Schonder on June 30, 2020 during our reporting for the “The Choice 2020: Trump vs. Biden” - FRONTLINE’s critically acclaimed election series featuring the interwoven, investigative biographies of both presidential candidates. It has been edited for clarity and length.

There’s something so peaceful and calming when I see this man talk.
This man’s soul is so so so beautiful. So beautiful. His words are poetry. My heart literally felt like it was swelling up when I listened to this. I mean “literally”. My soul feels on fire for him.
God bless him so much grace this man has. It’s obvious. Wow!
Yusuf is articulate and very thoughtful. Thank you Frontline for giving him a voice. Not once did he call Trump a name or show anger toward him for all the wrong Trump did to him. Yusuf taught me a lot listening to this interview. Thank you, Yusuf. I hope DT listens to this interview.
He's extremely well-spoken and respectful considering how poorly he was treated throughout his life. I thought he was a Harvard grad. I am not sure I could be if I was in his shoes. He's an amazing person. 💪💪💪 Trump's treatment of the CP5 should disqualify him. He should apologize

Karendal Sadik wrong place wrong time. Extremely bad luck and the culture they were faced with sealed their fates. It's a tragedy. But he really made me feel hope for humanity. He has been through the worst life can offer, and perseveres. I would be full of spite.
In our corner of the world here in south western Canada, within the "kaleidascope of humanity", there is a feeling and a statement being passed around that the USA is about to collapse. After hearing Yusef here, I realize that the past of the current president is the problem who is "leading the ship through tangled waters". Honest and good people are capable of changing the man at the helm through democracy, if the are allowed to speak, if they are given a place to do it. Americans should be proud of PBS. You have a COUNTRY that can still lead. I feel like I can believe in the ability of America to pull themselves together. Theres allot riding on your choice America, let the people be heard. Listening to hatred and impure news will not solve your issues, will not let you continue to grow. Yusef, thank you for being the principled person that your family raised you to be. Peace :)
so articulate, they tried to destroy him and he beat it, just imagine how much talent was lost to systemic racism

Yusef, Thank you so very much for this honest and intelligent interview. It was extremely powerful. Please do get out there and keep on talking truth to power. It is so sorely needed. Once again, I thank you for your willingness to tell your truth.
I seen a news interview with one of of Yusuf classmates in the 80’s and she spoke on how nice calm and loving he was so the disbelief of the crime he was accused of didn’t make sense… 30+yrs later still the same
They all came out fine men despite this.

Excellent interview. I would only like to add that "Protect and serve" is not a job description, it's a slogan.
OMG! This is so scary! How could this be done to kids?!
Such a shame. Glad his life returned to him.
People that called for this man's death and decades after he was absolved still do not have the remorse to say I'm sorry deserve the same amount of hell this man endured, albeit wrongfully.
Guilty, before proven innocent.
This is to hard to listen to.can not believe happen n America.

Why? This guy is guilty as fuck. Anyone that feels sympathy for these guys is misinformed. He was there that night. This guy specifically was attacking random people with a lead pipe. He and his friend's admitted to attacking that woman. The prosecutor and detectives are outraged about these scumbags. Now they're running around acting like innocent victims that didn't do nothing. If I ever ran into one of these people I would definitely commit a crime.

The melodrama and odd use of confused metaphor towards the end of this interview should have been edited out. Trump should have admitted he was wrong.

@@withfootnotes I'm saying that I took on my own case in the civil side of the court. I had a terrible experience. For example I mentioned laws they ignored. Lawyers twisted up my writing because they had to dismiss the case. Because I did not have a lawyer. We the people assume politician, judges, lawyers would protect the rights of the people. The latter is not true. If you don't make lawyer salary no ln lawyer will give you the time a day. Lawyers have a right to choose their clients. Test assured we the people need to take on our own civil cases and demand transparency.

Define past? Who gets to say when is enough time to “get over” something? Certainly not someone from another country who hasn’t experienced it! I’m Canadian and I wouldn’t dare tell another person of another race how long is long enough especially when it’s still going on. That’s outrageous. You said yourself you can’t relate. So since the racism is still rampant and 30yrs ago is not long at all, I’ll not even think of telling someone when to stop dwelling on a pain that’s never been addressed and a pain that continues to inflict others. I lived in the States for a few years, the racism was nasty and the majority of white Americans are clueless to it and guilty of it.

What is beautiful about Yusef's recounting of his horror is that he has not allowed hate to take up space in his heart. I wonder if you were in his situation would you be able to do the same.
