    What do dragons look like? Ordinary people don’t know. Only sages who have opened the five eyes know what dragons really look like. The dragons depicted by Chinese artists have horns, scales, prominent eyes, a large mouth, whiskers, four feet, a long body and a short tail. The artists paint only the dragon’s head and not its tail. The saying, “You can see only a divine dragon’s head, not its tail” refers to the sense of mystery here. Why did the Chinese paint dragons that way? Because there was a Dhyana Master who saw a dragon in his samadhi that looked like that. Dragons have spiritual penetrations. Their transformations are inconceivable. They can become big or small; visible or invisible. The Sixth Patriarch used his bowl to subdue a giant dragon that had been a menace to Nanhua Monastery. Dragons are giant worms. In their past cultivation, since they diligently cultivated the Great Vehicle, they are endowed with supernatural powers. However, since they were lax in holding the precepts, they have fallen into the animal realm. There are different varieties of dragons, such as gold, white, blue, and black dragons. Some dragons are born from embryos, some from eggs, some from moisture, and others by transformation. There are also two-horned young dragons, eagle dragons, single-horned dragons, black dragons, celestial dragons, earthly dragons, imperial dragons, human dragons, fish-transformed dragons, horse-transformed dragons, elephant-transformed dragons, and toad-transformed dragons. Ven. Master Hsuan Hua

    How do you say ‘western dragon’ in mandarin? Does it use a different character to ‘long’?

  • @Omewy0917

    @Omewy0917

    4 ай бұрын

    I might be mistaken, I believe a more accurate translation of “dragon,” especially in a Western image, would be 两翼噴火蜥蜴, which means “two-winged fire-breathing lizard”. The Loong typically lacks wings and possesses a horse-like head, a snake-like body. Its scales resemble those of a Qilin(also a Chinese mystic animal), and its claws are like those of an eagle.

  • @Shenwangruiyuan

    @Shenwangruiyuan

    In mandarin, "龙" both means "western dragon" and "Chinese dragon". But these days, someone say that we should use "多拉贡" to represent "western dragon" to show the difference between them, which is the transliteration of "dragon" in Chinese.

  • @flyawayhome3

    @flyawayhome3

    4 ай бұрын

    @@Shenwangruiyuan hmm ok. so if Chinese people used 龙 to apply to a western dragon, and English used 'dragon' to apply to the 龙, both English and Mandarin seem to have accepted the similarities between the two making them both 龙/dragon. (But obviously two different types.) It seems strange to me to then try and force the use of 'loong' in English which is simply just the Chinese word for dragon.

    @@flyawayhome3they learned it from Koreans 😂 Koreans tried to force Chinese to use the phonetic term for kimchi instead of calling kimchi “Korean paocai” so now Chinese are doing the same. Koreans said calling it paocai would be claiming kimchi as Chinese so that’s why we have to call the Chinese dragon “loong” too, otherwise we are claiming it as a western mythical creature
