The Chicks On Why They Dropped The "Dixie" And Wrote A Modern Protest Anthem, "March March"

Ойын-сауық

Stephen is joined by Martie Maguire, Natalie Maines and Emily Strayer of The Chicks for an in-depth chat about what motivated them to drop the "Dixie" from their name, and why they continue to live up to their legacy of taking a stand on issues that matter. Stick around for a performance of "March March" from The Chicks' new album "Gaslighter" which is available everywhere now. #StephenAtHome #Gaslighter #TheChicks

The show was in London, of all places, the crowd there probably would've been a bit more emphatic. In 200-fucking 3, probably the equivalent of a 1922, 1984 and 2017, of all the 'news' you choose to cover while the iron on Iraq was still hot, is outrage over a pop country group speaking their minds. Also, Ted Cruz, very fitting you call the "entire South", "Texas" but know the term "diminutive", ha.

I haven’t seen it! I was a fan of theirs (weird since I don’t listen to country) but I remember thinking you don’t go to your neighbors and complain about your family back after 9/11. I didn’t judge them, that just entered my mind despite my disliking Bush. I think we have reached the point that it would be embarrassing not to do that right this moment ironically, as we have hopefully reached the bottom. Glad they have endured! I will have to check it out!

Their days when Natalie was focused on her family, and Martie and Emily decided to tour as Court Yard Hounds, they went more bluegrass-y... I really liked that music, more than their TDC stuff, which I never connected to. Could catch more of the harmonies and subtleties.

I have a sub-cultural warning for The Chicks of New Zealand and The Chicks of America. The latitudinal distance and the amount of resources involved in the recording, printing, publishing and all video displays of The Chicks only risks a bi-polar stress for both groups. The Chicks there, The Chicks here, The Chicks here over there, The Chicks there over here, can only disrupt the t-shirt and tour jacket business in both continents. It is a bi-polar planet. If the Dixie Chicks aren't the Dixie Chicks any more, again, other peoples' problems grabbing on to them, I see them as overcoming all adversity and being in a respected and comfortable place. That's worth a new name, as if they finally came home to roost. They're real musicians and songwriters. Chicken'Picken is nice. You can always use pick your chick. Home to Roost, could be a title.

I don't know what Ted Cruz thinks it means to call something a "diminutive term" but I'm not convinced that using that phrase correctly indicates anything offensive. In point of fact, I think it literally means a smaller term. For example, "space" is a diminutive term for "outer space." If that's what he means, he needs to learn to count.

@@Bdear1 Even Reagan wouldn't fit in well with Republicans today, what with his support of open markets and of multilateral institutions like NATO. And his distrust of Russia. Even more recent, we know W Bush prefers any centrist Democrat over Trump's Republican Party. Trump has just been such a gross destruction of the Republican Party, that even the worst GOP before him wouldn't want him.

“"I will say, then, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races -- that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of {N words}, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man, am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."” - Lincoln debating against Stephen Douglas in 1858. Stop imagining Lincoln was your anti-racist hero of history.

@@GetReady4FreddyKrueger No doubt - all of our former Presidents had strengths and weaknesses, and like all people, they were products of their time. You would be hard pressed to find many humans (much less political leaders) who didn't think white people were superior in some way to black people in that time. It's wrong. However, just like there are shades of racism, there always have been shades of racism. This is not a binary issue. You can't lump David Duke in with someone's 93 year old great-grandfather who is generally a nice person, treats black people well, but still uses inappropriate words and thinks interracial marriage is wrong. No one is saying Lincoln held the same beliefs as anti-racist people do today. That would have been nearly impossible to expect. He did however recognize that people shouldn't own other people. That was the crucial issue of the time, and he was on the right side of that. Stop minimizing the importance of that just because he wasn't perfect when it came to racial beliefs.

  • @GetReady4FreddyKrueger

@@feverpa I haven't minimized any importance. Those who believe in Lincoln as some kind of anti-racist who was against slavery are the delusional ones. Just truth here. For instance, he wrote: "I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views." - Abraham Lincoln's letter to Horace Greeley August 22, 1862.
