Lyrics:
Mary Anne and Wanda were the best of friends
All through their high school days
Both members of the 4H Club
Both active in the FFA
After graduation Mary Anne went out
lookin' for a bright new world
Wanda looked all around this town
and all she found was Earl

There is a case pending right now, where the wife talked her husband into letting her zip him up in a suitcase and video taped him begging for his life as he was smothering to death. ....she is on tape saying "thats how you made me feel". She is awaiting trial in jail for almost 3 years now, because she cant get a lawyer to defend her actions.

With Trudeau in power, this line has even more significance here in Canada: perpetrators of assault are committing assault getting arrested, bailed, and arrested again, same day. One guy in Vancouver was arrested 3 times in one day, once less than an hour after being released. Innocent people should not have to live in fear like this!

  • @scarletamazon3455

Because it's so often true. Usually an abusive partner who the courts agree to grant a restraining order against is exactly the kind of person who will completely ignore, or toy around with the restraining order in order to terrify their victim, when the abused partner is also at the highest risk time - when they leave and draw a boundary. The song does make the struggles clear. That she tried to do it the lawful way, it didn't protect her and he almost ended her, so they made a plan. The only way she'd be safe, since the courts won't lock them away, and they'll plot revenge even if they get a long sentence and victim is left in fear or in hiding for the rest of her life... Goodbye Earl! At least in the US, women can have weapons to defend themselves in their own homes. Those of us in countries where we cannot have a firearm, a taser, or even pepper spray, and abusers ignore restraining orders here too...

@@scarletamazon3455 I don’t think people necessarily expect that a RO will perfectly protect them, but it does at least mean the victim can call the police without having to wait for another specific threat or assault to occur. And, you may not be that much better off. Abuse victims here in the US may have more access to weapons, but so do their abusers. And the abusers tend to choose more lethal methods.

What sticks with me the most is thinking of those girls/ladies coming together to end abuse, nurse wounds, solve a problem, and live happily ever after selling produce on the side of the highway, with the murder being just a comedic bit. I like to think that the Chicks primed my generation for abuse prevention through this song alone. I've always been there for my sisters and always will be. And man, where did those years go?

My best friend of 15 years was in a relationship with an “Earl” about 5 years ago. One night things got so bad he beat the living crap out of her she called me in tears to come rescue her I went right away to the house picked my friend off the floor and drove her straight to the hospital. The next morning we went back to the house packed up all her things and got her the hell out of their and she moved in back with her parents until she got back on her feet again. She’s now in a loving relationship with a wonderful man and have a beautiful daughter together I couldn’t be more happier for my BFF!

There has been a solid list of historical and popular songs which justify men murdering women. Both men and women, for a long time, have believed the reasoning of those songs--because they are on the air, in our lives. Part of the culture. The question recently came up in a group of women singers: are there any songs about women killing "men who done women wrong"? Without a blink, we all said, " Earl." Thanks, Chicks, for giving a voice to the Other! You had the balls and the words!

Many years ago, I was to be a witness for an abuse case involving a 4yo girl - against her father (my neighbours at the time). I was also majorly harassed and threatened by the grandfather in an attempt to intimidate me into not testifying - which worked on two of the other witnesses - a babysitter and a pre school teacher. I was soooo angry about what he had done! And having experienced my own childhood and marital trauma, the emotions ran deep. This song was my catharsis song! I felt a bit naughty but played it over and over in my car on the way to & from EVERYWHERE, absolutely belting my lungs out to it! Thank you Chicks. You guys rock! You helped me express what I struggled to put words to, and that helped me to have the strength and courage I needed at a really difficult time xx

YEAH!!! So, I don't need a reality check, but this song reminds me of when I was in an abusive marriage and passively would hope something bad would happen to him. (Didn't happen!) I Finally got the courage to up and leave (with some real good counselling). Today, 35 years later, I am not that person at ALL. I am strong, caring, and confident. BUT, I STILL love this song!!! YAY for the DIXIE CHICKS!!!! :)

I'm 19 and can't believe I just heard this song for the 1st time ever when it came on the radio in the garage with my dad last night. The second it started I said "ooo this sounds good" loved the melody/singing instantly. We were in the middle of moving stuff when the chorus hit "That Earl had to die!", I immediately paused and went "😯 Oh my gosh I love this". Immediately put it on my playlist. Watched this vid about 3 times now. You know when a song is so good, that it makes you cry from how good it is? Not even just sad songs. I'm just getting choked up smiling at how good this deceptively upbeat song about getting rightful revenge is!!

Came here from Taylor Swift's no body, no crime. And must I say, this is beautiful. Almost cried on that hospital scene with Wanda with the red eyes because that's a fucking true shit that happens. I called it "eyes bleeding from inside" as a kid. I love this. I love this. I hope this gets back to mainstream.

I've always thought this song was so unique and important. This, Janie's Got a Gun, and Independence Day by Martina McBride. All of them explicitly share stories about domestic violence and abuse and that's such an important topic that is not sung enough about, especially considering the time periods those songs were made.
