    There is a big mistake in the form of the song. The first four bars of Bb7 must be postponed and put at the end. Where the melody begins, there the form begins.

    Good discussion on form, made me go back and listen through half-dozen different versions to get better feel. Right or wrong, FOR ME easiest way to think about it does follow format above, with main melody coming in on 5th bar. For soloing makes it a lot easier to go 'round and round thinking in this version of form.

    This form is wrong. All the chords are right, but it should be 1 line of Bb, then Eb in line 2. C7 and the break in the 3rd line, then line 4 is Bb again. The break may sound like a conclusion, but it's not the end of the form. I'm surprised nobody's pointed this out.

  • @Shanannigan1

    @Shanannigan1

    I don't think so. The song begins on the first Bb line, and it ends with the break, which seems to suggest that this is indeed the proper form. The solos also begin on the Bb and end on the break.

    Googled, and found primarily charts which match the one in the video. I'm assuming you're referring to the real book chart which has it the way you mapped out. The real book is not always accurate, and isn't an authority on the matter. If you use you're ears you can hear that the form follows the one above.

  • @xXRogueFloppersXx

    @xXRogueFloppersXx

    Hobble No. Listen to the real song. There's four measures of Bb, two of Eb, one of D, one G, three C, then one for the break, then four of Bb (actually each measure switches between Bb and Eb). So this backing track isn't necessarily wrong, you just need to start on the second line.

    Its actually a 1, 4, 5, 6, 2 progression. The 5 is substituted with the infamous Tritone substitution. You can hear it on The Thrill is gone as well. Instead of the 5, you move down 3 semitones, which happens to be a half step down from the 4. Works great in minor blues as well to spice up 1,4,5’s.

    I wouldn't use mixolydian at all. They're all 7ths, you need some colour, D blues scales, G blues scale, C blues scale.

  • @DKjazzguitar

    @DKjazzguitar

    For C7 in this context, my recommendation is C mixolydian with a sharp four, aka lydian dominant. The letter names fot this scale are C D E F# G A Bb C. It's a great go-to sound for when the second degree of a major tonal center is a dominant 7th chord and not a minor 7th chord. This is a very common sound in jazz harmony. For example the second chord in "Take the A Train", or the second chord of "Girl from Ipanema". Heck, "Desafinado" uses it as a centerpiece. There are countless other standards using this sound. It's deeply ingrained into the jazz lexicon.
