The Chiboo Brothers | From struggling farmers to milling 20 tons maize per hour

Watch our video to meet brothers Zakariya, Yoonus and Mohammed Hanif Chiboo who’ve built Yarona Milling along with Mohammed Hanif Chiboo into a lucrative business using the Roff R-70 Maize Mill.
Born into a farming family, the Chiboo brothers have always had close ties with agriculture in South Africa. Their entrepreneurial spirit was cultivated from a young age, when they started working in the family’s general store in Syferbult, Rustenburg in the North West Province. Here they learnt important business and customer service principles.
The brothers teamed up with a business partner and decided to pursue maize milling in search of a profitable business venture. It took some convincing, but they eventually persuaded their uncle in 2014 to sell them his used Roff maize milling machines that were just gathering dust in his storeroom.
That was the start of their partnership with Roff Milling. Roff initially provided technical support and maintenance for the brothers’ existing machines, as well as advice on how to grow their maize milling business in stages. Yarona Milling went from strength to strength, but the brothers realised that they had to invest in a higher capacity mill with a small footprint that delivered better extraction rates.
They invested in their first Roff R-70 Maize Mill and have never looked back. Since the R-70 is locally produced in South Africa, it was also a more cost-effective option than some European milling alternatives. Today, the brothers own five R-70 Maize Mills with a milling capacity of 20 tons per hour. Thanks to the R-70’s best-in-class extraction rates, they can sell a 12,5kg bag of meal for R20 less than bigger brands - saving their customers money and ensuring repeat business.

Absolutely, George! To sustain a maize milling factory processing 450 tons daily, you’d need about 51,151 acres per year, assuming a yield of about 2.4 tons per acre and you only harvest once a year. This area is roughly 0.21% of Ghana's total land area, which is about 238,533 square kilometers. Most millers, however, purchase maize rather than grow it all, as it simplifies logistics and ensures a steady supply year-round.
