The CHEAPEST R32 in the USA and Its ROUGH!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today we add another R32 to the fleet. This is a 2004 R32, MK4 generation. I am pretty sure it was the cheapest R32 in the US. The car needs some work. In this video we walk through all the MK4 issues, do visual inspections on the engine, suspension, brakes. Also plan for a fair amount of rust repair. At this exact moment the plan is for about 500WHP turbo setup. #R32 #Humblemechanic

I don't know if this R32 is with a DSG, maybe an option, instead of the 6speed manual.🤔 Get the sunroof out, put a cage in, rip the interior out, go for a nice time attack track tool maybe.

I certainly want to upgrade my stock stereo and speakers. I think my front L speaker has a short because it makes an interesting noise everytime I start up my car. Great point on the headliner! For the most part mine is fine except for the rear near the hatch and my front pillars coming undone.

I would LOVE to see a complete & in-depth video series on building up a race-ready VR6. Stripping down, block re and re, boring, oversized pistons and h-beam rods, crank knifing, dry sump, timing, CNC dimple head porting, oversized valves with dual springs and titanium retainers, cams, short intake, big turbo, meth injection, and dyno tuning. Or, instead of the stereotypical VR6 turbo, a REAL electric supercharger/hybrid system. There’s some companies out there doing electric motors driving the crank via cogged belt (as opposed to an electric leaf blower fan in the intake), and battery banks in the rear.

@HumbleMechanic Charles awesome video! I can feel your excitement for this R32 through your enthusiasm and eagerness, for the turbo and big brake kit. In a previous thread of yours I posted about an issue I was having with my MK4 R32 - CPS BANK A&B Circuit High Input. I replaced the sensors myself, but never cleared/reset the monitors, and as a result I failed SMOG. You replied to my inquiry and I was encouraged to not give up on my R. Long story short....had I not passed SMOG I would have likely listed the R for sale at around $3500 with 224k miles (no rust). After seeing your project R I'm glad I didnt low ball myself and I now share the optimism of building my R into a race car like yourself! My R has been my daily since 2006, so I'll be picking up a newer vehicle first, and then at a much slower pace following your lead! I look forward to your posts and the feedback from the VW community.

But the engine runs smoothly, transmission shift fine, everything just works! Sometimes even want to take it apart and see how can this thing keep running this good! Oh my, I have that same sway bar and 034 end link setup on my Mk7 GLI. Well, it has different bends in it for the AWD vs my FWD but those end links are so worth the extra cost. I do love me some H&R as I also have their lowering sport springs also. Was shocked how much difference the rear sway bar and end link upgrade made with the overall handing and made the initial turn-in so much better. I think I am going to keep and continue running the DCC adaptive dampeners as I really do like them. Thank you for this one Charles and looking forward to your new Wookie build. In UK have 2.8 BDE 4mo with R32 suspension set up and brakes. So be great to see how you tackle that on the new project.

I dig it! I bought an R32 with less miles and in arguably better mechanical shape for 4300 about two years ago. It suffered from clear failure (red) and had some mix/matched body panels and was subsequently painted black (poorly) by a previous owner. I got the fans working (it had Spals with a switch) which got the AC working, and I fixed some other issue with the rear haldex not working and it was a fun car. I now have a much nicer red one and I'm happier for it. I also have a MK1 TT that has a 3.2 swap that has the same vision of power. I would love to see this build follow a "budget" theme all the way through--refurbish rather than replace when possible and show that a MK4 can be done well without a ton of money if you're willing to put in the work.

Anything with changing the cams to upgraded ones would be cool to see. I just got a mk4 R too so I'm pretty excited for this build. If you ever get rid of that stock airbox I'd be interested :)

Charles, show us how the center diff feeds off trans and how to service it when it leaks! Maybe show us seals, center diff "bearing" and how to properly mark the shaft when disassembling halves to replace the bearing.

It’s just nice to have MK4 info coming out. Due to the fact I own a mk4 gti 1.8t with an automatic transmission ( I’m looking into a standard swap hope someone to can point me in the right direction here) it’s not very common to come into contact with great information on servicing such a now a days “older vehicle”. One thing DIY I’d love to see is changing the rear windshield whipper line and deleting it. It’s currently a free flow in my car if you accidentally pull the lever so I wanna delete and delete the whipper as well. I have both Bentley books on the car but getting some one else’s opinions on what they see and do can really help. Thanks @HumbleMechanic for the awesome videos you put out.

Charles. Can’t wait to see you go through this. I also have a HPA Turbo Kit. FT470. Charles. Once you’re pretty much at the end of completion on this R32. I highly recommend HPA’s Touchmotion. I purchased it and it is a must even if you have a complete stock MK4 R32 and Audi MK1 TT!!

Since I am from Germany I can tell: All the rust spots are super common on these era VWs. Almost any and all have these issues, when not looked after well. Especially the fenders - it happens that there the drains get clogged and the leafs and all get wet, keep the wetness there and finally it starts to rust. A good thing to do in our world of road salt is regular washing and cleaning out the drainage around the fenders. It is not only a VW thing, my Opel also was full of gunk there.

6:29 best thing you can do to save your car is run an AGM style battery. I put one in the 99.5 Jetta I got in 2001 and besides it lasting 13 years when I pulled the battery tray up to inspect the wiring recently , the grounds looked brand new. What did it have for a battery for the last 8 years ? A dead one , it was tucked away in the garage awaiting timing chains and all that has been completed recently. So spring a couple extra bucks on a better battery than a plain old lead acid , and you'll be happier years later.

That suspension looks like my old 2000 Neon, my first car (bought in 08 when I turned 18). The suspension was all sorts of messed up after 3 years of driving. I replaced all the suspension and other stuff myself, thing ran and drove great. Yeah its a Neon....but it was my learning car. I learned a whole lot of what not to do on it as well lol.

Request : Although not too difficult, I cant find gen 1 haldex rebuild instructions (general checking, and eg clutchpack replacing), all parts still available from vw/audi. As you understand, my haldex is busted on the TT.

Interested to see what method you use to remove the side skirts for the body work repairs. I removed the side skirts on a 2003 R32 without damaging them at all, they are screwed on at the front end of the car (near your rusty fenders) and bonded underneath. Following this, good luck with the project.

newish thing to the bumper repair scene is a hot stapler. Maybe wortha look and try and film the process. Theyre simple to use and quite effective. And easy to combine with plastic welding. Thaughts ?
