The Chateau Diaries 083: The Scents of a Chateau

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It was a beautiful week - I visited Paris with my mother, and we had a delicious meal at 'Le Dome', which was much loved by Hemingway and all of early 20th century Parisian artistic society.
Whilst exploring Le Marais, I got sucked into the seductive world of evocative scents at Cire Trudon, the oldest candle manufacturers in France, who were the official suppliers of candles to the court of Versailles. I brought back a candle to scent the chateau in time for Lalande's open day for the French 'Journee du Patrimoine'. Any excuse!

I'm 20 years older than you Stephanie, but I want to be you when I grow up! You are so kind and generous, and always make everyone feel so special. You are as beautiful inside as outside. Thanks for the beautiful vlogs you share. I especially liked this one with the bit of history about women. I'm watching all of them in order now after discovering you a few months ago.

I love your passion. 🐓Cooking, sewing, travel, entertaining, art, photography, history, reading, shopping and decorating...plus so much more! All in one video. I travel myself and find a long and lovely meal alone with a great book can be a luxury. Thank you for the weekly doses of inspiration Stephanie! 🦚

You took us on a fabulous journey this week. Thank you for sharing your favourite shops in Paris! Your mother's English is perfect - I understand she has lived in the UK for many years but I wonder when she started learning to speak English and have you always been bilingual? What a gift! When you are alone with your mother, do you speak in French or English? Thank you again for such a beautiful glimpse into your world.

So lovely to see all your Paris sights, I’m very envious of all the ambiance and aromas in the restaurants and shops. It’s funny or sad I guess that the younger generation don’t use furniture polish anymore, the smell of paste wax or oils always made me feel like a job well done, along with everything polished and sparkling, windows clean and bright, the fabrics freshly washed, hung in the sun and crisply ironed with starch. My Nan always used blueing in a huge pot on the wood stove to wash her whites, no one could ever say her whites were yellowed or grey. I remember coming fresh out of the bath as a child, my hair put in rags or pin curls in front of the fire then crawling into a crisply starched bed of Snow White linens. Those were the days, they were also a ton of work though and once women worked outside the home who had time for all that nonsense and lovely smells come from candles and aromatic sprays. 😂🤣🙋🏼

@@TheChateauDiaries Roger was giving you a message. Overwhelmingly in most cultures, the mantis is a symbol of stillness. As such, she is an ambassador from the animal kingdom giving testimony to the benefits of meditation and calming our minds. An appearance from the mantis is a message to be still, go within, meditate, get quiet, and reach a place of calm.

Stephanie - may I thank you for all your 'full of joie de vivre' videos, which i have been binge-watching this week in an effort to assuage my considerable flying phobia before an upcoming trip. I’m very happy to hear that these videos have helped you! I’ve been travelling a lot all of my life. From the age of 3 I flew to France as an unaccompanied minor several times a year to visit my grandmother. So I have taken hundreds of flights. But suddenly, in my 20s, I developed an irrational fear of flying! So I know what you’re going through. I forced myself anyway, and after a few years it disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared. So strange!!! I hope your fear goes away too! We can’t be governed by our phobias.

I enjoy watching the chateau diaries it is good to come across so much positivity at this time. Just one small correction in the vlog living the Downton abbey life today . The house you call Waterhouse hall is in fact Eaton Hall built by the architect Alfred Waterhouse 1830 -1905. This is not the sad story of a lost country house. Today Eaton hall near Chester has been rebuilt the chapel, stables, tower and terrace remain. A new house was built on the terrace in about 1971 it was an ugly concrete building . This large building was however rebuilt in 1991 when it was to take the form of a french chateau a new roofline was built and it was clad in red sandstone . The beautiful park and gardens remain and are open to the public normally for about 2 days each year. It is still the home of the Duke of Westminster.

it is fascinating to listen, observe, and research the history of your life and that of your family. i have enjoyed following along the historical path you lay in your video diary, even though I have chosen to get the information as it comes to me, not necessarily sequenced in time. as time goes by, I continue to find interesting pieces of the puzzle, and when they are found, it is good to go back and revisit the particular video. literally, one can use verbal accounts, photos, documents, past gifts, treasures, artwork, etc., to weave a complete and thorough narrative about your family. i wish, sometime in the future, you would dedicate a little more time telling about your father's works and work in the art community. i get the impression that he had several art expressions, e.g. oil medium, carving, and I believe some work in pottery and sculpture. i think my views have drastically changed concerning the "diary" aspect of recording history. to me now, my view of a diary is seemingly what I have seen in these videos. logging information, organizing, preserving, framing, storing, writing notes, on, and on. you have taught me that the diary is really not just words on a page, but rather, a careful and never-ending execution of bringing together all aspects of the essence and constitution of the person, the life, and his activities. and, for that, I say "thank you" and "God Bless you!"

Thank you! This is the book that I’m reading: amzn.to/2mWwNvb It’s called ‘Against Marriage’ and it’s an extract of the correspondence of Anne Marie Louise d’Orleans, who was known as ‘La Grande Mademoiselle’. She did not live at Lalande, but she did own it during the 17th century. She was the richest heiress in Europe and must have had many properties - I don’t even know whether she ever came here or not, but she was certainly engaged in a court battle over the ownership of Lalande. She’s a fascinating woman. As her fortune was in her name alone, she was able to reject offers of marriage, much to her cousin’s (King Louis XIV) annoyance. She saw marriage in those days as the enslavement of women, and was an early proponent of women’s rights. It’s an interesting read!

At that time he married Marie Suzanne Le Maitre de Laage, who inherited the Chateau de Lalande. Charles Joseph became Marechal of the King's Armies in 1823. The Marquis de Nadaillacs kept the chateau for nearly 200 years. In the 1860s a fire led to the rebuilding of a wing and the addition of the two circular towers. The chapel was built in 1865 after the drowning of the five year old Charles de Nadaillac in the moat.

it is so difficult to decide on who might have the première woodcarvers in the world---the french, germans, English, Chinese, Indo-Europeans? but, when you see all that the french did it their public spaces, homes, furniture goods, and their fabulous churches, I imagine I would choose them as slightly above the Germans and the English.

In the magazine, House and Garden, April 1984, pages 106-123, you will find a Renaissance apartment in NY, of the Baron and Baroness Guy de Rothschild. It is gorgeous and would fit nicely in that apt, where the Marquis lived. Look it up, you will love it, Stephanie.

A praying mantis is good luck! …I don’t know about the mantis but we had dragon flies figure out that mosquitoes were attracted to us, so the dragon flies would sit on us to hunt the mosquitoes. Win\win!

Anyplace that has pigeons is a "no go" for me. I was in Paris for nearly 3 weeks. Pigeons and their gooey poo dominated too many spaces, even when trying to eat, they constantly stood by waiting for someone to toss them freebees. And the cooing sound - gives me PTSD responses. Aeek.
