The Charming Scandinavian Town of Poulsbo, Washington & Holiday Greetings from Searching for History

Poulsbo is located on the Kitsap Peninsula and its city center, the historic “Little Norway” is one of Erin and I’s favorite small towns to visit in Western Washington. On a walk down Front Street you will find shops and art galleries, many with a Scandinavian vibe. Poulsbo was founded in the 1880s by Norwegian immigrants and other Scandinavians from the Midwest of the United States. Modern-day Poulsbo maintains a Scandinavian theme to honor its heritage.

I just recently drove from Port Townsend to Kingston to catch the ferry to Edmonds. I saw a sign pointing to the direction of Poulsbo and thought it an unusual name for a town. Now, I wish I would have stopped in Poulsbo! But it reminded me of Solvang, a Danish town located in the Santa Ynez Valley about 45 minutes north of Santa Barbara and about two hours north of me (I live in Los Angeles County). The similarities are definitely the shops but that Poulsbo is located by the water and Solvang is located in a valley are really the only big difference. Thank you for sharing.

@@searchingforhistory Thank you for your reply. Let me know what you think of Solvang after you look it up. I must admit it’s very difficult not to visit the bakeries! Solvang has an outdoor theater that features summer plays such as Beauty and the Beast and The Addams Family which is totally fun. Solvang celebrates Danish Days, Christmas and even has a great car show. The restaurants feature Danish food including the famous dessert Aebleskiver and Kringle and Swedish pancakes. Located in Santa Ynez Valley, this is wine country, lavender farms, miniature horse farm, rescue donkey sanctuary, and great little towns in the Valley as well. A great place to visit. Even Fess Parker best known for playing Daniel Boone has a winery here and a hotel complex in Santa Barbara.

@@paulaadams1765 Solvang looks pretty cool. It would be fun to visit in December. I image there is a nice bakery or two there. Poulsbo has an excellent bakery that we love to go to! Sounds like you have been to Solvang a few times! I am not sure when we will be in southern California but Solvang is now on the visit list.

@@searchingforhistory Solvang is actually located in the central coast area of California. I’ve been to Solvang many times and every bakery is delish. I hope you get to visit some day and next time I’m in the Puget Sound area, I’ll definitely visit Poulsbo. I’m a history nut so keep them coming. Best to you.

Viking ware is always cool. The shops seem artsy fartsy at first but they carry quality products. You get what you pay for here for a certain. The bakery line is always out the door. It's very hard to choose a pastry. The pizza joint on the corner has excellent slices. A must stop.
