The Charming, Offbeat Homes Of San Francisco’s Richmond District

San Francisco is not all Painted Ladies, you know.
This one's all about the Richmond District's houses and why we're so lucky to have such an impressive collection of homes... none of which I will ever be able to afford.

as a fellow bay area native (now in SF) i just want to say thank you for this type of refreshing SF content. i feel like the majority of content about sf on youtube is negative from techie transplants. love that I'm seeing more people admire the beauty of this cityt!!

An aunt and uncle moved to a model home on 47th Avenue (between Geary and Anza - just above the hill) in 1937. Their grandson is now in the house. As an Air Force brat, I had to give a permanent address and phone number to the schools I attended and it was their house that I gave. The phone number had the SKyline exchange. I'm glad you featured that neighborhood.

That was so sweet, and so philosophically non acquisitive. Lovely. I grew up out there and even right before you summed it up, was grieving for the days of common affordability.

What a lucky, bright, blue skyed day in the Richmond! I've lived in the 'hood for 18 years and counting and I only recognize three of those buildings...one being the ugly grey condo on Clement (please keep shaming it, it looks so unfinished). Props for wearing the Richmond tee from Park Life. Great video!

P.S. After watching the show, I thought your narrative VG. But it didn't change my opinion of the R/S districts. I just avoided those cities, later, which had row housing, or crappy weather, both of which SF has in abundance. That, and a divorce, allowed me to move to Marin, where I could walk about in the evening without thought as to "the marine layer". I was there 22-yrs, until 9/11/2001 changed and/or ended many lives. Now I'm in Florida, the nearest I can get to my primary goal of Warm Wx Always. My preference is Queensland, namely Noosa, but OZ doesn't need retired troops. Sigh Cheers, JL

When we were househunting (in 1985), my wasband insisted on living in the Richmond, where he grew up. I wanted to be closer to downtown, but one house we looked at was so perfect-in its own shabby way-that I knew I had found a home in the Richmond District. Thirty-six years later, I still love the house and the neighborhood. Thanks for the video, Joey.

My favorite less-known splendor in SF neighborhoods (23 year resident) is the interiors of residential blocks. So many overlapping tangled gardens and sprawling fences, stairways, and tacked on in-laws. In steep areas like Glen Park you get crazy vertical ivy jungle forts. They're all hidden so it's a special treat when you get to explore a new one. Though my friend in the far outer Richmond has back yards beat with her rooftop view of Golden Gate Park's west end and Ocean Beach.

I remember a missionary design house on Lake Street between Park Presidio Boulevard and 25th Avenue. In addition, one of the avenues has a house with a moat and a retractable roof. That particular house is probably off Lake Street.

Merci beaucoup for taking the time to make this. You did a brilliant job! Great observations...and you're such a natural in front of the camera. I grew up on 6th and Balboa and went to Frank McCoppin Elementary School (In the grand old building. The modern building in its place makes me sad). It's comforting to see that Cinderella's Bakery is still there. At 583 6th Avenue was Sam's BBQ, on the corner at 500 was a drug store where I got my comic books and on the other corner at 501 was Harold's Grocery store (He ran a tab for my Mom; he helped out so many families). A few doors down was the Jade Kitchen Chinese restaurant. Kitty corner from Harold's at 452 Balboa was a bar. Us kids from the neighborhood would drop in in the middle of the day and the bar flies would give us their pocket change so we could buy candy at Harold's! Across from Cinderella's was Red Boy Pizza. So many great memories. Thanks for reminding me :) :)

@@buffedtrainer1 Yes, but it's unrealistic to say that you create your own reality. For the most part, that is true. However, there are limitations to that. No matter how much someone may want to be a professional football player (for example), the reality is that age and other factors prevent many people from doing so. That's just being realistic.

C'mon, Joe-- I lived there for 23 yrs and always considered both the Richmond and the Sunset districts to be repulsive, with their row houses. I lived at 47 Forester, then at 400 Sussex Streets, the City College and Diamond Hts areas. I did rent at 25th & Balboa for a year after getting out of the Air Force in 1958, which brings up something else: You're too young to remember the "Bird Cage" traffic signals, which were replaced, um , in the 60's. They were red or green, no yellow, and they (not caused) allowed many auto accidents, which I witnessed from my apartment window at that period. The cause, at this particular corner, was evident: Going south on 25th Ave. is up a steep hill, such that you can't see the intersection with Balboa. If the birdcage rotates just as you're into the intersection, you're dead meat. Whatever your subject(s), I'm grateful for the flashbacks.
