Camille O’Sullivan: Many involved in the Celtic Revival looked to the west of Ireland to find a traditional Ireland. Like Synge before him Clarke visited the Aran Islands over a period of years. These visits were intended to help his health, and he even tried to learn to speak Irish.
Nicola Gordon Bowe: He stayed with this family called Kenneally on Inis Oirr
and he always stayed with them. And he did a lot of studies of the islanders. I think they were very good for his health, and his sketch book show these studies. He’d obviously been reading Synge.
