Vardzia is a cave monastery site in southern Georgia, excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain on the left bank of the Kura River, thirty kilometres from Aspindza. The main period of construction was the second half of the twelfth century.

Incredible! I learned a lot from watching this. A lot of people don't know much about Georgia so it is great you are traveling there.
Wow, your guide knows his way around EVERYWHERE. That one ceiling with the great view looks like a church ceiling. Those caves tunnels are way too small! Thanks for sharing all this info with us!

Vardzia is a rock-cut monastic ensemble, a monument of Georgian artistic culture of the 12th-13th centuries. It is a rock-cut city at 1300 meters above sea level. It was built by King George (1156-1184) and consecrated in the name of the Mother of God. According to legend, his daughter, little Tamar, was lost there! When his uncle called out: Where are you, Tamar? Tamar replied, I'm here uncle ( Ak var dzia - აქ ვარ ძია, It sounds like this in Georgian). Giorgi made his daughter Tamari king in 1184, before his death, and his reign (1184-1213) is considered a golden age in the history of Georgia. Best regards from Georgia ❤🇬🇪

These two are ahead of their time, thinking outside the box and the new rich.. 50 years (or hopefully less) more young people will follow their lead and travel more off the beaten track ❤️
