    How can 56 people give this a thumbs down? The 1980's provided among the best Gospel live concert music recordings. One More Time live from 1981 with John Starnes, Fred Johnson, Janet Paschal and Others and this live LP. These live Southern Gospel LP's became my favourites like the Elvis Presley RCA 1970's As Recorded at MSG and Aloha From Hawaii LP ones were in my pre-saved days.

    Still listening to this in November of 2021 and it still touches my soul and makes me cry. I cannot wait to see George, Glen and Roger in heaven one day and sing with them. If these songs don't light your fire, your wood's wet. The Lord is worthy of all our praise!!

    Man, that feeling I get when I think about the sound of that sound of an actual record album being transferred over to cassette by my Dad in the early 80’s, the MC announcing the band, I honestly can’t describe it. It’s priceless. These guys “walked on the water” in my eyes and mind as a child and still do to this day. 🤍

We live in MI and when her Grandma from AR was visiting once we took her see them live at a local church. She was in heaven. She talked to them afterwards and discovered that they were familiar with one of her friends in AR.

    I also love the Cathedrals. Right along w/the Gaithers (along w/JD and the Happy Goodmans), and the Gaither Vocal Band, and many other "old time Gospel" groups. I cut my spiritual teeth on singers like the Cathedrals in the 70's.

    This is the first gospel album I can remember listening to as a little kid. The Cathedrals was the first concert I ever attended and I was 5 years old. This was the lineup that night. This was also the lineup that really set them up as the dominant group for nearly two decades. I personally liked Danny Funderburk more than Kirk Talley, but Kirk wrote the first #1 song The Cathedrals ever had, "Step Into the Water." For those of us too young to remember the way The Statesmen and Blackwood Brothers dominated the 50s and 60s, this was the gold standard of the 80s and 90s. Glen and George were the best.

    The Statesmen and the Blackwood Brothers Quartets, along with the Imperial Quartet (before they went Contemporary!), were what I grew up on. Other groups, such as The Kingsmen Quartet, The Inspirations, and many others, have been what I've listened to for a long time, and I still do to this day! These songs serve as one of the ultimate encouragements to serve the LORD. The ultimate influence, though, is the Holy Bible, of course! I'm glad that we're going to a city oft sung of, and worth going to! When we get to that City, where the LAMB is the Light, it'll be worth it all!!!

    Who ruled the 70s in Southern Gospel music?

  • @michaelholman517minKC

    @michaelholman517minKC

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@AdamPaul2222 That’s kind of tough to say, because this was also win contemporary Christian music started coming into Vogue. The Bill Gaither Trio, Dallas Holm, Don Francisco, and The Imperials were big in the 1970s. But getting back to strictly Southern Gospel music, you had the Speer Family as they started finding their identity after Mom and Dad Speer passed away. You still had the Blackwood Brothers as James took a step back, and Cecil became the spokesman of the group. JD Sumner and the Stamps had quite a bit of notoriety, especially because they were one of the main back up groups for Elvis Presley. And we also cannot forget the Happy Goodman Family who really took off in the late 60s and all throughout the 70s. The Kingsmen and the Florida Boys did some good things in the 70s. And when Rex Nelon bought the LeFevres group upon Eva Mae’s retirement, he had a great young group headlined by Janet Paschal that had some good hits right at the end of the 70s and into the early 80s. I think the 70s can truly be described as a transition decade in SGM with no single dominant group.

    This group of The Cats will always be my favorite. Kirk Talley on Tenor (sometimes playing the Bass), Mark Trammell on Baritone (but really song Lead on many songs and played the Bass Guitar more than Kirk), Glenn Payne as Lead Singer (the best), and George Younce on Bass (the best in the business.) Loved it when his son-in-law Robbie Willis would play drums anytime they were in Atlanta. Robbie was married to George's daughter Dana. A precious friend who passed away far too soon. Robbie played for The Nelons the longest. I guess I was 4 when I first heard them and fell in love with Kirk right away. They weren't just great singers. I would say they were great actors as well but that doesn't feel right to say. George would say the same thing and tell the same jokes every night as if it was the first time he'd ever said them and the rest of the guys would act like they'd never heard him say that before either. Deep down you knew it wasn't fake. Not for George and Glenn. They could hold the audience in the palm of their hand. A gift that was passed on to Kirk when he left to sing with Roger & Debra. They were spiritual and entertaining at the same time. They made you forget about the problems at work, school or home for just a little while. A glimpse of Heaven. We need more people like them today. Others try but fail. The only folks I know that come close are the scrabble Family and the Bowlings. You just have to be real. The audience can tell. Be saved, realize it's not about you, and be your true self. I'll always love these guys, Kirk's writing, and Lari's arrangements. It was magic.

    "Lord, I want to love you more than I ever have before. You're so easy to adore." No, He is not "easy" to adore. The Lord God Almighty is everything that the world and our selfishness is NOT. And, self does not die easy. If God seems easy, take another look at His Holiness. His Love demands everything we are, and the dying of self. These guys were a great quartet because Glen and George were faithful to God in their lives. They lived what they sang.

I used to have a copy of it, but even though I don't have that anymore, I'm glad that somebody took the time to put it right here on KZread! The introduction of Ernie Phillips on that album is absolutely priceless, and so funny! The song list on that album is tops, too! Yes, I am just as anxious as anyone to escape this world and go home to paradise; but what about our lost love ones. Jesus is coming soon. This scares me; for there are so many deceived. There are so many lost, who don't even know that they are lost. There are so many going to destruction; so many on their way to hell unless they repent and accept Jesus as their Lord and savior; but they don't even know that they sin, that they fall short of God's glory. (see John 3:16) They don't even know that they need the savior. They are so deceived. There is so much to do. So Lord would you tarry longer? so we can go to war against Satan, the great deceiver. We have so much to do. So Lord, let us get busy trying to get the truth to the deceived, to the lost, to the perishing. So Lord would you tarry longer Because You are long-suffering toward us and would that none should perish? (see II Peter 3:9) So let us not tarry; Let us get busy helping the Lord rescue the perishing. So Lord, as we tarry not; would you tarry longer?
