What I loved about Anne's voicing for Haru over the japanese, is that it was less, typical anime school girl, and more "human" and more easily relatable.

That’s what I love about how Disney gave the Ghibli characters their english voices. They really made sure to have the characters sound real and relatable over a very stereotypical generic anime.

But for real though, Cary Elwes was basically the perfect VA for Baron

He’s excellent, but I think Mark Hamil is better, his roles more iconic. The Joker, Firelord Ozai, Agent Muska, the mayor of Pejite, etc.

I already loved anne hathaway, and now i discover that she gave her voice to a ghibli character... Just how perfect is she ?!!! She is amazingness !!!

Always amazes me how well the Studio Ghibli animations dub so well into English and the thing that amazes me the most is, unlike in Disney movies where the actors seem to insist you know who it is doing the dubbing all the way through the movie, whereas in Ghibli they are doing the dubbing for the sake of the movie and not just their egos!

I was halfway through watching Boy and the Heron, I was shocked when I realized that Robert Patterson voices the Heron. Can’t even recognize him

This movie is a sequel to Whisper of the Heart, which is truly underrated

Haru is very much like Mia from princess Diaries and yes Tim Curry does look like the cat king and Cary Elwes is the baron they were all perfect for their roles 😭🙌🏼

Elliott Gould and Peter Boyle bantering as their characters was everything. Such an amazing cast and they all did a fantastic job. Totally underrated movie.

I've seriously never heard Cary Elwes talk without that dapper British accent, so this is messing with me.

the banter between Peter Boyle and Elliot Gould was one of my favorite parts of the voice acting in this movie

Anne Hathaway slayed the role

Literally everyone was the best person for their role in this movie, hands down. I've never seen a more perfectly cast English dub.

It's interesting hearing the different perspectives on how each actor handles the change from Japanese to English - just goes to show how subjective it is (within reason)

Woah! I can't believe the voice actor for Baron is American!! His English accent is spot on!

Tim Curry was so perfect as the Cat King!

The movie was fascinating to see, but what’s surprising to see is Tim Curry playing the role as the Cat King. Like damn, I grew up terrified as a kid to see play his role as Pennywise from Stephen King’s It, and all of sudden, I see him in one of Hayao Miyazaki’s films. So gotta say, bless this movie and bless Tim Curry for giving me the unexpected surprise.

I haven't heard the dub before, but based on this video, he was the perfect actor for Muta's role. His voice comes closest to capturing the feel of the original.

It felt so wrong having a big crush on the Baron.

Just found this video, it was really interesting to watch! Thank you for the upload. I love The Cat Returns so much it's such a wholesome and astonishing movie💛

This really makes me wish Miyazaki spent more time on backstory and some characterisation instead of just going for the golden 1.5 hour mark for kids movies. This story really could have been fleshed out a lot better with more meaning. It's good, but it leaves me wanting more.

A decade late, but this isn't one of Miyazaki's Ghibli films - it was directed by Hiroyuki Morita and written by Reiko Yoshida. Also, Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro" is slightly under 90 minutes but has fantastic character realisation; the same is true of "Grave of the Fireflies". The non-Ghibli "Garden of Words" and "5cm per Second" achieve great character studies in just 45 minutes and one hour respectively. It's just a matter of quality and focus.

Just a side observation: the original title was "Neko no Ongaeshi". The last word means to return a favor or an obligation; it's not about a cat returning anywhere or anything. I like to translate it as "The Cat's Payback" because that phrase can have multiple meanings, as it does in the film. This anime works on so many levels; it's a longtime favorite of mine!

This and Laputa are my absolute favourite Ghibli films.

Baron Is Cute & Cool

Elliot Gould did good voicing Toto but it would've been cool if they had Dan Aykroyd voice Toto now that would be cool
