Why am I not surprised BYP has the cleanest playthrough of Castles of Burgundy on KZread? It's the small touches that I notice and appreciate: The use of a dice tray so that components aren't knocked off of their spots, the handy bowl for the workers & silverlings, no messy piles of tiles cluttering the tabletop, etc. Look at that overhead camera shot.👌

I loved that around min. 4:30 we had a look at how your thought process is when making these videos without the editing. I've always wanted to see and hear that, you guys working out between yourselves in the moment how to explain the next steps you want to cover and how exactly to do it and the speed in which Monique in a matter of seconds transitioned and just kept on explaining the game. Excellent work as always!

It might have been a mistake because I saw the video uploaded and then it was gone for some minutes. Maybe they caught that after they had uploaded it but decided to leave it and re-upload it. I think it was a good decision as I enjoyed the video more because of it. It was nice to see that even if it was just less than a minute. Great stuff either way.

Just demonstrates the amount of work that is needed just for a single game, to plan and execute the recording. They have done a stellar job, effort!! with everything done, and will do so into the future.

Pro tip: Sell a goods tile early to get an extra silverling, which combined with the one you start out with gives you access to the black tiles in the center. For instance, Monique was torn between getting the castle or the cows in the beginning, but could have gotten both if she used a die to sell goods. It's usually one of the first things I do if the tiles in the center are decent, which they tend to be.

So the channel “before you play” is where they play the game.. and the channel “watch it played” is where Rodney explains the directions to a game.. you guys need to switch channel names lol. You got it backwards lol.

I have only just recently played it on BGA and I now understand the love and passion for this game. It’s an elegant design that is easy to learn but so difficult to master.

It really is a fantastic design that stands the test of time in our opinion. Such an easy ruleset and love the asymmetric player boards.

Slight correction about your storage capacity - while it is a hard limit, you CAN always replace any tiles in there with new tiles you pick up after you've reached the 3 limit.

Excellent tutorial. I have just gotten the new deluxe version, and I have found your playthrough the best in explaining how to play.

Your channel is one of the few that I check into when trying to learn about a game - I like how you not only explain the game, but explain why you are doing what you do on your turns! It helps me understand the game better. I have the anniversary edition and plan on playing my first game tomorrow! However ... at the 44:55 time stamp it looks like Naveen changed his die but did not spend a worker to do it (unless he had some sleight of hand that I missed).

Hey Monique and Naveen! So cool to see you guys do a CoB playthrough, and even cooler to hear you reference the little Mine/Silverling rule "oops" that we had in our game at DTW! I feel like an Easter Egg! Anyway, after getting this game (actually the Anniversary edition) for our collection and playing about 10 games in a row with my wife, I have definitely improved my strategy. I did note one little error at the 19:37 mark where Naveen used the Church to take an animal tile (which is light green). The Church is actually only allowed to take a Castle (aka dark green) tile, as well as yellow Knowledge or gray Mine tiles. The other building on the chart to the Church's right (I forgot the name) is the one that allows you to take the light green Animal tiles (as well as the blue Ship tiles). Anyway, loved playing the game with you guys, and next time I see you at a Con, I'm up for a re-match! Happy gaming to you both!!

This is a late comment but just saw this, and actually played it yesterday. And we concluded that those yellow tiles that gives you end game scoring are sooo strong! Was way ahead in our game but lost it thanks to those.

Nice Play through. CoB is one of my wifes and my most favorite games. This makes me want to play it right now. Tentatively getting the new version on Gamefound. I need to investigate the Vineyards expansion to see if that is enticing. The other advantage is it gets us the expansions we dont have. Early in the video, at turn 4 of the first round. Monique says "Its the penultimate turn". Naveen "Are you going to say that 5 times?" i laughed out loud ..for real. Thanks for giving me a nice relaxing watch with my morning coffee. take care!

I just picked up this version of CoB because the new reprints look too busy. While the colors may not pop like the new ones, the functionality of this board outweighs that minor con. I’m excited to play, I think this will be a new favorite!

It is a great game. Once everyone has played before ..twice you always have the differnet player fiefdoms/maps to vary.

Such a great game - just got this one a couple weeks ago too. Been a hit with a couple groups so far

In the last round , if I am not mistaken, Monique you had the special city tile that would have given you 4 workers you needed and could have place both of your two city tiles and win the bonus of completing all of your cities. Great gameplay though for the two of you. Greetings from Greece

Never played and had access to this game, hope the Special Edition holds immense experience from the already brilliant base game. This is also Naveen's super favourite 😄.

Great instruction and playthrough! One note, at 7:55 you mention the limit of 3 tiles in your keyspaces and that you cannot discard. I believe this is worthy of a Klingon subtitle, you may spend a die to discard a tile from your keyspace. :) Hope this helps

Looks like such a great game, thank you for the play through. I have heard so many good things about Castles of Burgundy but was always turned off because of the box art ( I much prefer the newer art with the three keys). I finally purchased it yesterday and cannot wait to play it.

@22:10: I think the correct choice here for Monique would have been to: 1. Buy the castle with the two silverlings she received from the bank. 2. Use her "4" pip dice to place the castle. 3. Use the castle placement bonus (wild die) to take the only (non-centre) ship left. Her objective in the 5th round (of phase A) would be: 1. To first to sell any one good to make room for more goods and get a second silverling (all players start with one). 2. Now that she has two silverlings, she could buy the four cows now. 3. Now that she has room for more goods, she could place her ship onto one of the spots adjacent to the recently placed castle. Doing this sets herself up to become the first player in the second phase (B) so she'll have the first pick of a freshly fed board (hugely beneficial).

Great video as always. I think you would get mine rewards at the end of final phase too.

I had this game (1st edition) but sold it quickly and got Grand Austria Hotel instead. GAH is most of the time sold out, the editions are limited and if you manage to get the hands-on it, get it !!!! There is a lovely theme, a great variety of actions and most importantly, I'm not getting a headache from dice. In Castles of burgundy, you're always scanning the dice numbers - on the main board, on your personal board, on single goods etc... and it's even a bigger headache to sort the tiles based on colors etc...

I recently designed a 3D-printable insert and dice tower for the original printing of The Castles of Burgundy. Increase fun and reduce setup and teardown time :D models can be found on printables (for free of course)

Hello from Vancouver, BC! We just picked up this exact copy of the game two days ago and was thrilled to see you come out with this teach and playthrough! Really excited to dive into it now! Also, I love your dice tray! Is it still available for purchase somewhere?

What is fascinating in this game, with player count it actually changes a lot. 2 players is more like "do the best with what you can get", 4 players is more of a "do the most efficient county with pretty much all options available to you". P.S. yellow is mistaken with light green quite often :)

We just got the new edition of the game and tried it for the first time. Like you, we mixed the extension tiles in, but didn't take them out when we noticed. Maybe we should ... I lost 115 to 193. I will get there when we play again though.

I've just discovered this game on BGA and it is so good! I've also just binged your Uwe Rosenberg series, which was exceptional. Might you have any plans to do a Stefan Feld series at any point?

I can't tell if it's editing or if you guys actually play at this pace. It takes my wife and me at least 3 hours to play through a game. The AP is real. It's very cut throat in our house.

Start to finish filming this with the teach and discussion was 2:05, edited out the downtime for audience experience. This game can absolutely be cut throat!

At 1:04:28 I don't think Monique (apologize for the spelling) spent her other silver to purchase that extra tile.

I think at 19:20, Naveen did the wrong action by taking a farm tile instead of the castle tile by using the bonus of the Church tile after placing it.

Such a classic game. One of my favourites for sure.. never gets old for me. Also, this version is just fine how it is. I find the Awaken Realms version to be... very excessive.. lol. Games don't need to be blinged out to be absolutely brilliant.

Lol, Monique's big building section is a 7, not an 8 as you mentioned multiple times :D

@59:53 2 silvers are used to purchase a building from the #6 depot and a knowledge tile was referenced. I'm guessing this knowledge tile allows you to spend silver on tiles outside the center black area. I'm playing with the updated 2019 version of the game with "monastery" tiles. I guessing the knowledge tile referenced is the equivalent of the "Monastery #6" tile. On BGG I found some discussion about this tile's power to allow (or not allow) silver to be used to purchase tiles in the numbered depots. Can anyone provide more clarification on this move? It is still not clear, what do I need in my duchy to be able to use silver to purchase numbered depot tiles?

Does this mean that longer playthroughs are finally back and that uwe rosenburg series is back? And are you going to showcase the difference between the two version of castle of burgundy on the channel?

Yup we have plans to start recording playthroughs again soon! Unfortunately we wont be comparing the different versions of this game though. :(

I have been curious about this game since everyone raves about it but the box is just SO unappealing. It feels weird but I'm super sensitive about that stuff. Having watched this playthrough I have put this straight at the top of my wish list! What a great game. Thank you for doing these playthroughs, I know they cost a lot of time and effort but they are so so helpful. Now all I have to do is find some victims to play all of these games with..... 😉
