The Castle - Attempting to get a bucket shot photo - Budawangs

For many years I've wanted to hike the Castle in the Budawangs to take a photograph of the iconic views of Pigeon House Mountains and Byangee Walls. In this video I attempt to make that happen. Strong winds make us have to make some tough decisions and ultimately miss the timeframe I wanted to be on the summit. Still an awesome hike with stunning views.

Wow, fellas!! Hope you make it back there at some stage. I've been to the top of Pigeonhouse but that was so long ago. I have a nice scan of one photo but I can't show it to you here.....

Scotty it’s so cool being out there. I think you would love it. I have a spare tent you could borrow which is the one you slept in at the 24hr but it’s heavy. Probably not worth it. It’s a killer 😂 Next one I’ll keep you in the loop.

Cheers mate, it’s a beautiful area out there. So much more to see as well. Looks like you’re Brisbane based? If you’re ever down south it’s a good spot to visit. 👍

Glad you made it the wise decision to camp below. I was there in May and had lugged our packs all the way to the top to see tents severely bent out of shape before we had to retreat down to the main campsite at sunset. Its definitely worth camping up top with views for sunset towards Monolith Valley and sunrise over the ocean. Sadly the summit is rarely calm each time I've been there. I think I've only been there once with relatively calm conditions, every other time it's been gusty.

I’m glad you’ve written this, I’ve been sitting here editing this all week thinking we should of just stayed at the top. As I’d love to stay up there it could of been a miserable experience. I’d still love to do it one day. On the June long weekend I did a sunset walk out to walls lookout in the blue mountains. It was so calm out there. You could even hear the birds wings flapping it was so quiet. I could hear climbers UHF radios in the distance. It was eerily still. I loved it. Well that’s what I thought I was in for when I left the car 😂 how things changed 😂

@@advanturest Lets say another time, we went up there and it was gale force winds and it was too late and dark to go down the ropes safety so we had to dig out a ditch to find some protection from the winds as it was brutal and to top it off it rained for abit but the winds was strong enough to dry our sleeping bags out haha! My friend vowed never to return after the miserable night sleep and praying the tree above us wouldn't collapse on top of us! Im a sucker for views so repeatedly torture myself for sunrise up top. Winds are prevalent when theres big temperature differences and in winter with the sunny days and then cold nights plus all the surrounding mountains funnel all that wind around. I think a bivy would be the best up there as theres less surface area for the wind to catch. Anyways thanks for your great content!

Cheers Shad! Such an awesome spot and you really have to work for it. I think that's one reason why I've wanted to photograph it, you need to earn the photo 😂 I think Its time I do some more 4WD camps though so I can bring Sarah along. I feeling pretty bad leaving her at home all the time. I'm considering doing something in the area and just doing a lightweight walk to the top in the dark get that sunrise photo and then just return back to the car. Not quiet sure if thats a silly idea or not haha. Thanks for watching.

Love it Timmeh! Like you said at the close, less about the destination and more about the journey. Love that Josh and you are up for anything….though I’d be super curious about all the additional clauses in Josh’s model release contracts 😂 Pains me to say it, but I reckon I love these vids as much as ones with bikes in them - even if it’s bikes that brought me to your channel! It’s more about the getting out and in the spirit of Country than anything else for me. …but while we’re on a photo theme, what’s your lens choice for these kinda missions? Wide, normal and long… Zooms or primes… Fast or slow (for DoF vs. shutter speed)? Love to hear your thinking about the balance between what you carry (weight and size) and what you need (anticipating the shot). Anyway, keep at it and keep bringing us along.

Haha, Josh loves getting his photo taken, and I love that, sometimes I just want someone in the shot and he’s always keen and always seems to look the part. I’m always making jokes that he’s my model. I sometimes feel funny about putting my favourite photos on Insta because they’re always of him 😂 A lot of channels stick to a niche to try and grow but I just like playing with cameras. If no one watches it doesn’t really matter, the way I look at it is making these videos gets me out doing things I normally wouldn’t and that alone is awesome. Wanting to make another video is such good motivation to plan a trip. As for cameras, such a tricky one. I mainly use my 24-70 f2.8. I’ve thought about getting a lighter 24-105 f4.0 for some extra reach but my favourite time to shoot is when the light starts to drop and the f2.8 helps. I’d love to own and take a 50mm f1.2 on trips for that awesome low light and blurry background. I’d also love a zoom lens. There is only so much I can carry on a bike though. Maybe I should switch to a smaller system 🤷‍♂️ I do carry with me a 16mm f2.8 prime which is good for those tighter spots like inside the tent. It’s good for Astro photos too. I’ve also been carrying a small vintage FD 50mm 1.4 manual lens. It’s good for low light stuff around the fire etc and doesn’t take up too much space. it’s also fun to take photos at a slow pace. It really isn’t ideal carrying a big full frame camera as the lenses are also big but I do love my camera and probably won’t ever change. I just deal with the weight. Oh and lastly, I have a VND on the 24-70 to try slow the shutter down when filming. Thanks for watching 👍

@@advanturest so good hearing about your approach with KZread. I reckon the fact you are honest about your motivations shines through…repeat voyeurs, like me, are here because you are doing you mate. Authentic. Always! ✊ Yeah I’m just getting back into cameras recently. Historically, I had WAAAAAY too much sunk into them, chasing fuckknowswhat but through that process I did learn the best camera is the one that felt right in the hand and then just disappeared. I traded out a heavy bag of FF Nikon gear (film and digital) with noice Nikkor glass for something lighter. But then the “better” Olympus kit was just too cramped to be of any use in real use. I was fumbling over my fingers, menu diving and just not losing myself in the experience. Then I switched to Sony…it seemed the right halfway between size and layout…but then the images kinda left me, well….cold. So anyway a couple of years have passed and I’m back now trying an older Fujifilm with a couple of primes (16/1.4 & 35/1.4) so far, to see if the bug bites again. It kinda already has but more with the little Ricoh GR3x (40mm eqv.) compact I’ve started carrying about with me everyday at work. But, yeah, failing that the last stop will be back to dSLR. I still miss the fact the buttons fall where your fingers go, and after a while you forget about the camera and it’s just you and your scene and time. Anyway sorry about the waffle. But thanks (as always) for the inspiration mate.
