The castle at the centre of Nazi terror - BBC REEL

During WW2, German SS leader Heinrich Himmler attempted to turn a Renaissance castle into a headquarters for the Nazis' major paramilitary organisation.
Dubbed the 'Centre of the World' by Himmler and the SS, plans for a vast redesign of Wewelsburg Castle were drawn up. The work was carried out by the prisoners from an on-site concentration camp but not completed.
Today, the castle is a carefully curated museum designed to inform new generations about the castle's history and the horrendous ideology of the SS. It's also a memorial to those who were interred there.

It would have been so cool if they had been allowed to film Man in the High Castle scenes here considering Himmler's role in the show, but I bet any proposals would have been met with a massive "HEIL NO" from the German authorities. @@gmw3083 When I visited there on an army organised day out back in 2011, the guide told us that the purpose was to make the room less symbolic, by essentially mocking the belief by adding something somewhat absurd and out of place. He also got very annoyed when I pointed out that the "black sun" was in fact dark green. Incidentally, we were allowed to sit on the bean bags during his talk, encouraged to, in fact and not one of them was covering any part of the symbol.

I lived in Paderborn for 12 years during the 1970s and 1980s and stayed in Wewelsburg Castle on 2 occasions. (It was a Youth Hostel, and probably still is.) None of the Nazi rooms were open to the public at that time. And the museum concentrated on the early history of the castle only, with no mention of the Nazi era at all. How times have changed.

In the village below the castle, there is a very picturesque Medieval style restaurant or banqueting hall, where the waitresses wear traditional costumes (at least, that’s how it was in the 80’s when I visited there). It was a venue that was frequented by high ranking German SS Officers associated with Wewelsburg Castle during the war & one of the few places where Swastikas are permitted to remain on display, because they were ornately carved into some of the genuinely historic wooden furniture in this old building… I was told, at the time, by a friend who was then a serving British Army Officer stationed in the area, that the banqueting hall had a large album of wartime photographs taken within its walls, which showed various high ranking SS Officers posing in small groups or with the staff of the restaurant & that, if one asked discreetly, the staff would permit one to view the album - which is exactly what we did & it was quite fascinating to see first hand historical records from the War. One got the distinct impression, however, that - despite the deservedly odious reputation of the SS - the staff & proprietors of that venue were actually quite proud of the fact that their establishment had been so favoured & obviously held in such high regard, by the SS hierarchy during the War…..

  • @thebrettyouneed178

Thanks for your fascinating memories. I wonder if they still display swastikas there. The castle was entirely owned by the SS so I doubt there was a retaurant back then, the ss surely dined there but they probably employed their own private cooks. I think the staff is proud of the rich history of the place and felt honored by the interest of foreign visitors, not by the long past favour of those nazi brutes.

"Nazi center of the world" Only problem is most nazis werent cultists (unless you count hitlers personality cult). The people belonging to this SS faction were seen as weirdos by the rest of the party and Hitler would have gotten rid of them if they werent so useful. I visited the castle in 2013, at the time I was working in Paderborn for the MOD. At the time of my visit there were three coaches of elderly Germans visiting the site. Having enjoyed a couple of hours viewing the interior I found my way to the on-site resturant. In the queue I took a brief phone call from the UK. Having completed the call I could clearly hear the conversation in front of me between three very elderly men. Unknown to them I speak good German. It was evident they were ardent Nazi supporters and possibly ex SS Soldiers, from the some what derogatory remarks about the British and American force’s along with some choice German obscenities. Not wishing to disclose my knowledge of German I asked the young girl serving if she spoke English (knowing full well most youngsters speak excellent English, often better than young English youth) she very politely dealt with my order. By the time I came to pay she quietly apologised for the derogatory comments made. I thanked her adding we probably have elderly people in the UK who still bare malice and I did not judge Germans by the comments of a few old soldiers. I spoke in German, the look on her face and that of others in the queue was priceless. That stated, if anyone has the chance to visit this part of Germany it is well worth it. Paderborn is a really nice historic town.

Then Bismark and that crowd? So, from before, it was the Holy Roman Empire, that was made up of smaller, huh, fiefdoms? Much of European history, I've heard, were long-drawn-out echos of the loses of Rome to the local tribes. I'm not sure that those older sets of folks were in fact progenitors of those in Germany. I don't know if anyone knows for sure. A lot of part of Europe might have been seen as almost "city-states," a little like BCE Greece, up until not that long ago. My 2 cents.

Yes, Germany as a national state was finally formed in 1871 after Germany defeated France. The holy Roman empire existed until Napoleon took over Germany at the beginning of the same century. During french occupation the idea of german nationalism came up, which also lead to that anti-french attitude of germany later. You have your history stuff right, also with the stuff after the Roman empire, i just wanted to give you some extra context;)

It wasn't occult, of course, it was symbolism - building your own 'suitable history' out of convenient parts re-written from the real thing. You see it a lot happening now in conspiracy theories, denials, and such but fortunately rarely to the hideous extent that the nazis built up. The 'Germans', for instance, who defeated the Romans (and by defeat, we mean took down 3 whole legions) in Teuterborg were actually the Celtic Allemani in the cross-border region that the Romans named 'Germania'. They pre-dated both the Goths and the later Saxons who came in from the East, and who we might think of more as 'Germanic'. (apologies if I've skipped or fudged some details in this précis version. Feel free to correct).

Why would Himmler admire King Arthur? Arthur was a Briton who fought against the English (Jutes and Angles from Denmark) at some point as they were founding England from 449 CE to about 600 CE. Arthur is hero to the Welsh (Celts), and the enemy of the English (Germanic-Scandinavians). The most Germanic area of the world is the coastal North Sea area, from around Netherlands/Friesland through Denmark up into Norway and over and all through England. Germany itself is not quite as Germanic. The proof is in the DNA map of the Proto-Germanic U106 Y DNA.

Sorry, but not right: The beginnings of "Germany" start with the descendants of Karl d. Gr./Charlemagne who ruled as kings of the "Ostfrankenreich" - later called "Deutschland/Reich der Deutschen" - from about 843 on. There were also several kings of this country with the name Heinrich/Henry over the centuries (some of them even became "Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reichs"/Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, namely after being assigned by the pope in Rome). However, there's still one big mistake in the film: It was not "king Henry" who was the idol of Himmler, but rather "Duke Henry" (="Heinrich der Löwe, Herzog von Sachsen", ca. 1130-1195) - he never became king or Emperor and was just the owner of a large feudal territory within the "Reich", much of it having been conquered by himself from Slavic tribes. Thus representing the main figure of German medieval "Ostkolonisation" and bearing the same given name as Himmler, he became the Reichsführer's historical shining example...
