The Cast of Yellowjackets at Vulture Festival

When members of a female soccer team survive a plane crash that leaves them stranded in the remote northern wilderness, they go from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans. The show follows this descent, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later. Cast members Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell, Samantha Hanratty, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher and Sophie Nélisse joined Vulture Festival for a conversation following a special the screening of the first episode.

Okay- so everyone is talking about this interview with Juliette. She's totally fine up until the question about what the writers have in store for season two and beyond (this interview is before they were renewed). From what I gather, she is more of a movie person and not used to television where the entire script is already written. Like the said in the interview, she didn't know her character was going to be so depressing and coming straight out of Covid that might have been a huge bummer for her to play such a dark role. What she said about the 90s and "I like being in the present" is referring to the fact that she is not a new actor. She's been doing this since she was 19 years old and is a veteran actor (same with Christina Ricci). In the 90's and beyond, a lot of media focused on her drug addiction than on her acting, and she takes her job very seriously. I'm just bummed so many people are hating on her. Yeah, it was rude to storm off the stage but knowing how she feels about her specific way of acting and as an artist, it's understandable. She seemed happier in the interviews around the second season and has praised everyone that has worked on the show. I'll die on the hill defending her haha.

Juliette Lewis is a fucking rock star. She lived the 90s HARD and going back to it obviously opened up some wounds. I read that she didn't like the path Natalie's character took as opposed to how she was initially presented to her, and I'm hoping that, in season two, she's given the opportunity to evolve beyond the broken person she portrayed this season. That being said, I wouldn't be remotely surprised if she decided not to come back as she's notoriously picky about what she does in her career (and is still out there fronting Juliette and the Licks, which she's made a priority over her acting career). She's definitely more of an artist than someone who shows up for a paycheck.

I can't wait for season two Natalie. She knew Travis didn't kill himself but everyone just dismissed her and then Shauna really played on her doubts so she'd stop asking about Adam. Now that she know he didn't and Lottie has kidnapped her all bets are off. Like she said getting out of rehab she's found her purpose again.

my exact thought when she immediately walked off the stage. for anyone else i'd be like, 'ok wow a little abrupt and rude' but for Juliette Lewis i'm like, 'ok wow what a badass bitch.' lollll that being said, damn she really seemed unhappy w/ her character. i kind of disagree because i see Nat as the heart of the show. she's the only one of the survivors with empathy. she's so broken because she actually feels things but they are so overwhelming she drinks or uses to escape them. Tai and Shauna just shove that shit down and put on a fake smile. Misty has no feelings that extend beyond herself. i really do hope Juliette comes back and i THINK she will because this project has gotten so much traction and fan fare.

This cast is the best cast ever. I’ve never felt so strongly about a cast before, but they’re all phenomenal at what they do, makes the show so much more enjoyable. As for Juliette, things happen everyday, and while luckily for like me I get so sit at home alone when I’m upset, she has to come to these for her cast mates and the show. Basically we all have off days and we’re all entitled to feel how we feel. She was upset but I don’t think it had anything to do with the cast mates at all and I don’t think she was trying to be cold to Tawny either. Sometimes when you’re upset and someone tries to cheer you up it’s not always going to make your mood 100% better, but you still appreciate it on the inside. We have no idea what was going on. I just hope everything is well for her and also Nat actually is a fantastic character, I never disliked her, I’ve considered her someone who is just in a lot of pain from the past and wants to run from it. Everyone copes different. Excited to see where her storyline goes, I hope Nat gets happier soon.

Juliette Lewis’s attitude could be related to her personal life/career. She could have felt trapped by the production by playing something similar to what happened to her (drug, love loss, depression..). She dealt with heavy drugs/cocaine addiction and depression when she was young, after the break up with brad pitt, while at the very top of her fame & career. This caused her to disappear for years, and kinda slowed down/stopped her career. Even tho she has been clean for decades, the medias keep on bringing up this subject in every interviews and she is really annoyed by it. She has all rights to be upset if she wasn’t fully aware of the character’s storyline…And for an actress we rarely see on screen, who’s constantly reminded of her past, that’s probably not the kind of scenario she would have chosen. As someone who overcame her dark path she might have liked a different direction for Nat’ who already survived a hardcore childhood, the crash situation and years in the wood… and who’s now relapsing?

Juliette Lewis must have been having a bad day because she's much nicer and more outgoing in her instagram videos. She sometimes does live videos out of the blue and seems to actually enjoy speaking to her followers and seeing their comments. Though she adopts a "Today I'm going to talk about this" approach and doesn't pay too much attention to the stream of little comments and questions, which is actually a smart thing to do because on livestreams the comments are mostly quite banal. She's quite eccentric but she's obviously lived an interesting life and shows some wisdom.

@@TheChance1991 I guess, but still, that's someone doing their job so it's nice to be respectful towards them. Idk. I guess since this is being filmed and uploaded onto KZread, the questions are aimed at what they think the general audience would like to know about. Which tends to be standard stuff. It's probably meant to be casual and entertaining, not an in-depth interview. Speaking as someone who did interviewing on an amateur level - if you want to dig a bit deeper and come up with more original questions, there has to be space for that on the platform you're doing the interview for. Maybe there wasn't here. It is true that the cast have repeated themselves a lot though - I've heard a lot of these answers before, like how they prepared for playing the same person, so I can imagine that getting boring for them. The interviewer is just doing a job though, maybe she's not even in charge of the questions, so acting so overtly disinterested is a bit impolite imo. Then again we don't know what else she had on her mind.

I like that Juliette walked off. If they were as close as Melanie said at the end the cast would’ve steered some of those questions in another direction. She wasn’t interested in the interview & I feel like that was an entirely different situation. Juliette was very expressive when the 90’s questions started, especially when Christina started speaking and mentioned the attire of a porn star & smoking on the red carpet. I think that hit home for Juliette considering the 90’s for her or at least the nostalgia of the 90’s was a bit tainted for Juliette & that’s why she prefers to live in the present.. & then for Christina to chime in again with the cigarette thing. That “not across the board” part? & then for Juliette to chime in with something to say. & then Jen & interviewer to quickly sugarcoat everything & dismiss the woman for the girls in the back & continue the entire 90’s thing for Christina to chime back in with ciggies agh!! I get mean girl vibes from Christina. She’s good at it and no one even noticed. She’s full narcissistic. I can tell Yellowjackets was not really her vibe but doing the entire interview only to storm off at the end was due to the 90’s question. Look at Juliettes face when Christina is speaking, she wasn’t having it. lol As for Tawny, I feel like she knew & tried to tell Juliette in a very professional undetectable manner that she knew exactly what was going on. But imagine having thousands of people gawking at you.. you gotta downplay that shiz. & I think that’s what the whole eyeroll thing was.. just an attempt to downplay the friction they all felt onstage.

Just like I enjoy female driven rock bands I'm getting the same kind of enjoyment from tv shows(or movies) from a female perspective.
