Also the hours. Child actors can only work so many hours per day due to child labor laws and shooting movies and TV shows require long days. It’d cost so much more and take longer to work with actual teenagers/minors for movies and shows like this.

Not true. Christopher Mintz plasse from superbad was 17 when he filmed superbad and he had a sex scene as mclovin. He had to have his mom on set with him 😂. Like the other person in this thread said, SAG AFTRA has rules for the # of hours a minor can film. Most folks cast for what they call 18TPY (to play younger), where they find folks who are at least legal 18 so they can be on set longer.

they could have totally done this movie in a college setting and it would have still made sense!

It kinda makes sense for the movie cast to be older considering that do revenge is not supposed to be portraying a relistic high school experience. The way it’s writing is almost like a parody for classic y2k movies. There’s even references to other movies in do revenge. Also you have to consider that you can’t cast minors to play sexual scenes.

They can't hire minors because of all the adult themes on the show. Secondly, by law, underage actors are only allowed a certain number of hours on set (I think it's 4 or 5 hours). It's unethical for a TV or movie production to subject a minor to a sex scenes. Do you have any idea how sex scenes are shot? There are loads of people in the room from the boom operator, camera people and other crew even if its a closed set. Would you be ok doing that to a kid? There is a reason they hire adults.

I think that's fine honestly, child actors are often not treated very well and they're not that old, and this happens in like every high school movie or show ever.

People saying that they cast people in their mid 20’s because of the sex scenes, you do realize that there are 18-19 (maybe even 20) year olds that would be able to do these scenes right? They’re legal and probably still have a little bit of that baby face since they’re still maturing.

To the people saying they can’t cast minors because of sexual scenes, I’m now wondering why there are sexual scenes involving 15 year olds in this show/movie-

Yeah, you wouldn't think they cast teens to experience sex. I mean, Talia (Gabbi) was pretty young when they were filming, she was like the youngest almost closing in around 18 at the time. I could go on about this since I've asked a lot of questions before & done research, but I wont do that for a long comment that just goes on & on. You wont even get a video, lmao. (Sometimes my research is fake, but I do background checks & have to ask if it's real 😭) (She was 17 during the actual first few days of filming, then turned 18 through the whole filming & 19 when they finished up. So she was still able to corporate & help out. So if you say "Oh she was underaged kissing Maya!" She WASN'T.)

i still love this movie and like every netflix teen movie or show almost have like 25 or 30 year old playing teenagers and we re used to it sure it gives teenager wrong body image but for exemple this movie isnt supposed to be realistic and as a teenager myself who struggles with body image i watch those movies and shows acknowledging it because that's most of the movies and shows we watch and also there are sexual scenes and they're not gonna cast teenagers for that

If you want to watch a realistic show about teenagers played by teens watch young royals or skam!

This is totally normal and has been going on with most teen shows and movies for years.

So, addressing the comment under my comment, and the replies. It's true they have to cast older people for sexual scenes. But they tend to cast people older than the age of the character anyway. This mainly has to do with labour laws, minors can't work long hours, and also schooling. It's more likely when casting an adult who's acting they won't have schooling on top of that because they've either been through school or not chosen to go to school. As for the people saying the scenes are so inappropriate for a 'kids movie' it isn't a kids movie, I'm pretty sure it's rated PG-13, most 13yr olds are going to find worse things on KZread than from watching the show. Everyone knows how sex works, it's all natural. No big deal 🤷

Honestly I don't mind that adults playing teens (anymore). If the Jenette McCurdy thing has taught us anything is to protect children in the entertainment business. But what I do have a complain with is the over sexualization of minors

I don't see an issue with it, the only problem is that actors in the US can't seem to dress or act like teenagers (obviously that's not their fault seeing as they do what directors etc tell them to) we can do it in the UK, look at the Inbetweeners and Derry Girls

I’m kinda tired of people complaining the actors being too old to play high schoolers. Child actors are often exploited and are too young to handle the shit that comes with fame, so it’s generally safer to cast adults despite the age gap between them and the characters they play. The solution to this is to change the setting to college, but producers won’t do that because they want to appeal to the high school demographic, so they go with this route instead. I get it, it’s weird but I understand why they do it and it’s better than casting actual kids.
