Folks on the East Coast, Greg Hawkes gets together occasionally with a band called Eddie Japan from Boston and they do full Cars shows that are spectacular. Close your eyes and sub in Ben or Ric in your mind and you’re right back in the late 70’s / early 80’s again. Also adding that it’s awesome that David has his Boston accent still. Always loved that.

Greg Hawks was their secret weapon. A musical genius. All members were awesome and Elliott Easton is a guitar master. They all brought something unique to the band. But Greg's synthesizer creations took everything to the max and it was perfect timing because it was a huge part of what was happening in American pop culture.

Many will call them New Wave, but in reality they were more of a unique band in thier own way. Yes it screams 80's , but that decade and the 70's leading up to it, defined a generation like no other. It's was like perfect drug store sort of speak. It was like," tell me what your addiction is and I have it and if it doesn't exist, I'll make it", kinda thing. From Hard Rock to traditional 60's and 70's, to The New Wave tsunami that was about to flood the stations for ten + solid years, was on the rise. And the stud surfer riding that wave was none other than The Cars. The band had that one thing a few ever bands have, a unique incredible sound and they certainly made it clear, they we're here to stay, and they were ready to pave their own road to success in the history of Rock N Roll. It's like "The Godfather of New Age Rock" ,said. Ooh look out you rocknrollers, time may change me ,but I can't change time"(David Bowie). The Cars , an incredible amazing band who made it to the top on their own terms.😎👍

Elliot Easton is such a great guitarist, he can pull off a multitude of styles and when playing live he's note for note to the recorded material, his solos fit the material and are very musical. There's lots of other 'flashier' guitarists of the 70's and 80's who get a lot of focus but can't pul off the precise style Elliot has.

Their first album was my first record, given to me by my father by my request for my birthday that year. I think it was the only thing I asked for. Well, that and drums and a basketball hoop and a tuxedo and... But anyway, incredible band. Masters of the 3-minute pop tune. Poetic lyrics. Fully deserving of the Rock HOF. The Cars smoothly integrated what was modern musically at the time with good old fashioned rock and roll from the 50s and 60s. They added clever lyrics and musical layers that were both simple and complicated. But they never lost the magic that fast cars and pretty girls bring to the table. They weren’t trying to be political (gag me anymore). They were simply trying to be fun for fun’s sake. Remember fun?

I always thought Ric and Ben met in Cleveland and move the Boston together and started some bands I think he's trying to separate the fact that it was him and Ben started Richard Nd the Rabbits, Ocassic and Orr so it was joint effort for a band search but seems like hes talking all the credit for just himself Cars are my favorite band sicnce I discovered Guns N Roses, every single one of them is genius its not just one mans pursuite to find the right group of guys I mean everyone helps write all those songs maybe 100% lyrically , but musically everyone did their own Parts Elliott did his in a day and a half on the first self titled record was released the blizzard of 78 Feb , they're such a collective sound its obviously a joint effort Im a cars encyclopedia

And then sadly Rick!
My first album was 1979 when I was 15 and it was Candido. I grew up in NYC and I loved the Cars. In 1983 I was a soldier in Oklahoma but I had a Walkman and tapes. I remember listening to them (clandestinely) in my foxhole and dudes from the South saying “Yo man that’s crazy what is that ?” Well it’s 2022 now and I’m still listening. Much love to everyone.
I can't get enough of these guys.
Rest in Peace, Ric Ocasek 😇💖
Elliot always been my fav. Great guitarist great licks and riffs. Love this band. Rip Ben and Ric
Greg Hawkes Rocks, he was way ahead of his time a true talent.... You won't see anyone like Mr Hawkes playing and piecing together the keyboard parts . In my opinion he is the cars.... Overall what a fucking great band ... RIP Ben . Your not forgotten .....

Completely agree. EE is a fantastic guitar player, Ben is a cool vocalist, and Ric wrote the superb song, but Greg was the one that really defined the flavor, and many times played the "hook".

Greg Hawks was their secret weapon. A musical genius. All members were awesome and Elliott Easton is a guitar master. They all brought something unique to the band. But Greg's synthesizer creations took everything to the max and it was perfect timing because it was a huge part of what was happening in American pop culture.

We had the wonderful experience with Greg who produced a four song demo for our band. It was an amazing time and Greg is so humble. A real gentleman.
I wish this video clip kept going. Fascinating
This group..the soundtrack to my high school years when new wave came out. Still love it.
This is my all time favorite band. I love to have Ben Orr's voice and these guys are great, precision players as well. Hawkes mention of DEVO as a contemporary is to be highly commended. God Bless them all. I would add Cheap Trick also. M. Price - Class of ''89 Bowling Green.

RIP, Ric and Ben! We miss you!
Definitely helped to shape my life and broaden my music and world view. Great and unique musicians and artists, all. 🙏
Thank you a millions time over. Great to see the guys again. Miss them so much. Still listening to their songs today, and will do so for many more. Thanks again.
Every member gave a special contribution they were amazing together.sad that they split for me personally ben was the shining star of the group he certainly shone very bright

I liked both Ben and Rick equally!! That is what made the Cars soooo unique. Two equally great lead singers!!!!
I saw them in 78 and a group of girls were in front of us smoking a joint and one of the girls passed it to me, how can you say no? Never smoked anything in my life. Thanks Cars for all the good memories, I think. Lol
.. It was a privilege for me to have lived in the 80's...
This band wasn’t like any other band. They were entirely unique.
Best New Wave band that has ever walked this planet! Good luck with the "Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame 2018".

It's almost like yesterday when I hear certain songs by The Cars being played again. And it's still a bit surreal that both Ben and Ric are gone. Check out the solo albums of each band member if you haven't already, they are all very talented.
Is there more to this interview? Would love to hear it. What a fantastic and underrated band!
Great band many many memories! RIP Ben and Ric

Thank you SO much for the new interview material!
The fact that there isn’t a full documentary on these amazing pioneers of new wave offends me deeply Edit: ok you guys in my replies must be way older than me, when I said “deeply offends me” I was joking...it’s a joke. Sarcasm, people like me say stuff like this all the time. Yeah these guys deserve a well made documentary like Tom Petty and The Eagles got, but for god sake I was J O K I N G

Sydney O'Bier So do one. Who are you to be offended over that? As you go thru life you'll find being offended is a selfish and time wasting affair. Ben Orr was great but he would be 73 this year. How would you want to remember him. He died at 53. Not young.

Love Greg Hawkes, He is/was so ahead of his time. I always felt like he set The Cars so far apart from other bands at the time. Brilliant musician.
Greg Hawkes pretty much nailed it. When the Cars came out, Boston, Heart and VanHalen were all being noticed as well. Music was changing , bands like Devo and Missing Persons were getting noticed. Was a great time to be in high school.
I love you guys !!! I miss Ben Orr!
It's so sad that this band is kind of underrated they are so good!
Greg is definitely under-rated. Amazing talent...
RIP Ric 😢😢😢
Miss Ric and Ben so much.
That's what I love about these old rockstar's/ musicians!!! I like to hear the old stories or origins or what was it like going out on the road touring and making records!!! That fascinates me!!!!☺☺☺☺😊😊😊☺😃😁😄
The Cars smoothly integrated what was modern musically at the time with good old fashioned rock and roll from the 50s and 60s. They added clever lyrics and musical layers that were both simple and complicated. But they never lost the magic that fast cars and pretty girls bring to the table. They weren’t trying to be political (gag me anymore). They were simply trying to be fun for fun’s sake. Remember fun?
I had the time of my life at the Cars concert at Poplar Creek. Cruiser by The Cars and Double Agent by Rush were the two best live songs that I ever experienced. Great times!
About fucking time you made it to the Rock and Roll HOF!
RIP RicOcasek
Thank you the cars
I love hearing new stuff from these creative, talented men.
Hi Elliot, Eddie from The Rat 76-78,Still listening pal!
They we're All very talented and Wonderful guys, and there music will always be listened to in many years to come, its 2019 and I still love there Songs.
And what a fantastic "stew" that was for sure ! I could eat 4 extra dishes !
Rip Ric !! Giant loss in my heart
You guys were ahead of all your contemporaries, Greg, as you still sound great.
Ric RIP Ben RIP
This is the best band for this kind of sounds! The Cars is so very UNIQUE! The whole band know how to play their Instrument! I love the Cars music! Man I miss the 80s sounds so bad ass!I wish I can go back in time to the 80s!

I loved the band from before they came to be a superband, it was my band and only very few people knew about it but their music was fabulous. Then they became a superband and their music reached their highest and it wasn't the same anymore, hearing them in my room or my car wasn't now as joyful as before, they belonged to the world and we had to accept it.
I enjoyed the comments by Greg and David
Thank you for posting!
1:41 You can tell I'm a young fan because I'm picturing Ric and David texting each other even though I know you couldn't text back then.
1:43 just epic insight for us hardcore fans - so cool!
Their debut album was the first record I ever purchased as a youngster. Side two of the LP is like one continuous song and I wore it out.
The talent encompassed in this band is comparable to the planets lining up. Cosmic, written in the stars long ago destiny.

I've always loved the Cars!..I remember staying up late to listen to Midnight Album Release of "Panorama!"...I'll love them always!!!...the keyboard player just saying...the were like Van Halen...and Devo to me is Right!!…they had a unique sound I'll Love forever!!
They are the best Rock group ever,I pray they get into the Hall of Fame this year.Vote People
Best voice any of us ever heard Ric
The Cars should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame long before Benjamin Orr passed away. Totally underrated band that displays so much raw original sound.
"hes a BIG star". Same thing the Beatles said about Ringo.
Incredible ensemble!! One of my favorite memories 😎😎😎 Unreal that I was in the middle to end of my career and missed the release of Move Like This😮 To my joy at 53, I got to listen to new to me Cars album this evening!!!!!😎😎😎 Wow can't fathom how that got by me, too many hours buried behind a console😂😂😂 Anyways a great final album! Tho, it would have just a been little cooler had Ben been there😎😎😎 Now to listen to it again😎😎😎
Love this...I'm reminded of Steely Dan and Pablo Cruise from some of their early bands....lots of greatest rolled all up throughout the years....but still ....their own unique sound. ..love them forever.

Kurt Cobain said the Cars, B-52’s, Devo, and Blondie were three of his favorite bands.
I wish you didn’t have music playing while Ric talked. He had such a soothing voice.
Damn, Elliot Easton went from looking like the coolest guitar player ever, to looking like Larry Mondello (Leave it to Beaver).
Great video. ❤
