    I come from a musical family. Dad (God rest him) played vibraphone, marimba, piano and drums, and went to Juilliard in the GI bill. Mom sang wth Saxie Dowell, later Tex Beneke. Though I lived wth vocals and percussion..I appreciate horn. One of our dinner guests, I remember this when I was very young, was this gawky kid named Chesney. He would later on, be known as Chet. As in Baker? "I've been around the world in a plane.." Very nice video..!

    I’ve always tried to strive for a sound like Chet Baker. I play a 1c mouthpiece and aim for that warm, airy Chet sound. Your HT3JAZZ really nailed that sound with this horn! 😃

    Is it possible to create a pocket piccolo too? Tube length of a piccolo, but wound / coiled to get the overall size even smaller?

    I really dont have suggestions regarding improvisation. I work from my ear. The real pros are able to improvise from reading the chord notations. I do know that the owner of Horn Trader who sells Carol Brass gives lessons. He might be an option. Or find someone locally who is a great player. Best of luck.

    Daniel, I do not know of a flugelhorn type mouthpiece for trumpet. However, the Yamaha 16E for cornet has a wonderful flugelhorn sound, although it is tougher to hit the high notes. Sometime back I contacted Yamaha to ask if they made the 16E for trumpet; they did not, but that was a year or two ago. Happy playing.

    Can we change the range of playing notes with changing mouthpiece?

  • @Bob1Mack

    @Bob1Mack

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hasitha Weerasinghe Here's an answer guaranteed to drive you nuts: No, but yes, sort of, a little bit, but not really. Different mouthpieces will make some things easier, but always at a price. Some mouthpieces (shallow ones, usually) can make high notes easier, but the tone will be smaller and less resonamt, particularly in the low register. If you are a high-range (screech) specialist the tradeoff may be worth it. It doesn't change the range of the instrument, but it can favour some parts over others. Personally, I got a "soloist" mouthpiece last year, and it has helped me enough to keep up with my band, but I know that it's time to get a deeper one. This will give me a better tone, but it will take me some time e and effort to get the top range working again.

  • @stradjazz

    @stradjazz

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Paul, I have just purchased this horn and it really is a joy to play. I have never been a high register player, nothing much above high C or D but with this I managed E, F and a double high C !!! It seems to play better in the high register than any other horn I have owned .... and I have been playing for over 50 years. It slots well, holds good tune and the valves are smooth. Having said all that Paul, no change of instrument will magically get you higher or sweeter notes, no more than a change of car will make you a better driver .... however, consistent practice and imitation of good players will!

    stradjazz thank you so much Mr. Johnson I am thrilled you answered my question. I always pay attention to your channel for tips, I am already incorporating a suggestion you had about improvising. Yes I do understand that a different horn is the not a cure all. I will keep working hard learning trumpet and wisdom about life from great spokesman such as yourself....than you so much.

    @@MohamedAhmed-jo1gy I greet you too. I have Amati ATR 314 .. If you just blow air into the trumpet, I'm afraid the problem won't be in the trumpet. Trumpet is not like harmonica. Probably the problem is playing technique. If you don't play with mouthpeace alone, the trumpet won't play. Watch the trumpet basics videos. Best regards VP

    Mohamed, I am not sure I understand your question. But if you have never played a trumpet you must understand that you cannot just blow air. You must buzz your lips in order to make a sound. Bring your lips together and then force air through your lips to make a buzzing sound. It is difficult to explain by text. If possible find a trumpet player locally to give you a lesson. To play a lower note, relax your lips; to play a higher note, make your lips tighter. To understand what I am talking about, watch this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/np19m7GxfLSrk7w.html
