The Career Path of an Event Photographer | Early, Mid, and Late Career

In this video I discuss the career path of an event photographer.
I wish someone had given me a general idea of what a photographer's career path would be, but unfortunately one just does not exist. Typically what happens is that you just kind of figure it out, photography job to photography job. But having a general idea of where you want to go with your career can be PROFOUNDLY helpful. So in this video I share my experience in figuring it all out, wit the hope that it will help you out on your own professional photography journey.

Crazy helpful, inspiring and motivating. Portrait photography is my favorite but it’s a mega quiet season and I’m just longing to shoot again! So at this point I’m just asking friends if I can bring my camera when we go out and shoot away. Today is event one and I’m stoked. Thanks for the teaching!

These videos are brilliant- thank you so much. My background - after struggling to compete with local photographers for many years, I started investing more time in a local personal photo portrait project (it took over a year to start getting traction) but now getting big festivals and businesses asking for photography. Be creative not (so) competitive is my advice!

I'm definitely still in the early stage. I've been shooting for about 6years now, but I have yet to get paid for shooting anything. I'm trying. I started marketing, designed a website, but I'm not really getting clients. If you have any tips on that, I'd love to hear :)

Watching this video would be a good start to give you a big picture look at how to get clients / work. There is not really a tip I can just give you that would solve it all. Good marketing takes a lot of work for example. A 1 on 1 session would probably help get you on the right track if that's something you're interested in. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Za2A2K2rmZqzZqQ.html

@@MikMilman Interesting. Would you use the same camera to do hybrid stills and video? What would the charge be for video and how long would video be? Since i shoot by myself I would have to keep the video limited. Thanks for this information.

Personally, I just about never hybrid shoot - I'm just not a fan. What you can do is give them a rate for a second person shooting video as well as a rate for you doing both. If you'd rather not do it yourself, then price a second person shooting video in a way that makes it seem like a better deal. Then of course explain to them that while you can do both, you'll be splitting your time and attention. I think you get the idea. No need for a different camera if you have a camera that shoots video. Also I would really keep in mind that there's no need to move in this direction. You absolutely can Do well by just shooting stills.

Hey! I posted on a previous post of yours mentioning how I shot my first event. It went great! First time really relying on my speedlight and everything. Got a second gig with the same company :). For more pay! Now I'm wondering, how do I turn this into my own brand. I'm currently just being subcontracted out so I can't use the photos for my own portfolio. Thoughts? Also, should I be developing my own contracts even if I'm being subcontracted?

Great video! So I have two kids, I am engaged and work full time as a photographer. I feel each person has to find their recipe. Mine is to contract for wedding studios making $500 to $1000 per wedding Atleast 4 times a month. The other side of my work is working as a photojournalists, I pursue editorial news stories, pitch them and sell them. To me I am in the middle of my career, this being I have moved around a whole lot and this is the first time I am staying in one city and one state.

Very interesting way to diversify! With the photojournalism do you self fund the trips for editorial projects? How do we go about pricing stories we have for publication? Is it like the event photography like by the hour charge? Or by the project fee? It’s all so overwhelming! Thanks.
