Wizard, an eCVT is very different from a regular CVT. The Prius and Insight don’t have belts and pulleys. They have electric motors and either a planetary gear set or just some clutches to connect the engine or motor. They don’t suffer from usual CVT reliability woes, especially the Prius since it’s just a planetary gear set

The Toyota Hybrid (Prius, Highlander, etc.) is not a typical CVT like Subaru and Nissan. There is not a belt. There is just two electric motor/generators connected together and to the gas engine via a torque splitter planetary gear set. It is actually quite simple mechanically and durable.

Hello Wizard. You told the Prius has a CVT just like the Mazdas, etc. The Prius transmission is a e-cvt and it doesn't even have a belt. I don't know why Toyota called it a CVT, because it is a unique system that no other brand uses. BTW, it is a ultra reliable transmission, unlike all the other CVTs.

  • @javiTests

    @javiTests

    4 жыл бұрын

I was going to say exactly the same. It's true that it's a CVT in the sense it's a Continuously variable transmission but it operates completely different to a normal CVT transmission like the ones in Nissans for example. As you say, it doesn't have a belt and everything is achieved with gears. You can see here how it works: eahart.com/prius/psd/ So I don't think it's fair to compare it with other "normal" CVTs

  • @emeraldages

Depending on the number of KM the transmission has it can wear out though. I had a an old Geo Tracker that had brass synchro rings that had worn out. Takes a long time though, and most of the vehicles are junked long before it is an issue. Also most manual transmissions are simple enough to be taken apart by a good mechanic in their shop.

Update: I got a second opinion and found a local transmission shop(mr transmission) and the owner made some calls. Removed the computer, shipped it to another shop and had it rebuilt, shipped back and reinstalled. $1100 and my car works perfectly again. Mid 2000’s Nissans have this problem apparently as well.

another fact about Chrysler transmissions is that they are EXTREMELY Sensitive (ESPECIALLY the A604/41TE/41LE from the 90s to mid 2000s) to the type and quality of the transmission fluid; you have to EXCLUSIVELY use ATF+4 or else you are signing that transmission's death certificate.

Very interesting episode about transmissions. Want to add my own story. I own 2004 Škoda Ocatvia that is basically VW Golf 5 with a bit different more practical body. Anyway it has manual gearbox and for quite some time I was not happy about the general feel of the transmission and clutch. Everything was working no slipping or anything but smoothness left to be desired. The car should be smooth and once the weird noises became stronger, I thought that well lets go and have visit to a transmission specialist. Friends were telling, that why bother, it is a manual gearbox, it works, all of them make noises etc. Oil change? Nah, you never have to change oil in manual transmission. So I was having driven 200 000km without any transmission oil change because dealer does not change it as VW does not require it. Anyway went to the transmission expert and he did find the oil a bit low and added tiny amount. The sounds coming from transmission changed. So I went back and requested the transmission overhaul. They pulled the transmission and found indeed worn parts and bearings inside. Replaced the worn out parts and it cost about €1500. Pretty much half of it was the labor. Also they recommended that please change the oil in manual transmission after every 50 000 - 60 000km. However now that the transmission has been rebuilt - it is very very smooth so totally worth the money. And pleas change the oil in transmissions. Although one thing to note about VW DSG gearboxes - the usual part that fails is a mechatronics block which is completely sealed and unserviceable. It is intended to be replaced by dealer and it is a routine thing although not a cheap one. But if yu go and tell the dealer that DSG gearbox is acting weird, then it is 99% mech block.

Part of the issue is that the turbo kicks on and off at the wrong times. The other issue is RPMs. The car waits for boost to accelerate rather than just giving more RPM. Last transmission shop I talked to, they had one location near me, but all they do is remove the transmission and then they send it to the neighboring shop for the rebuild and they ship it back to them so they can put it back in. So specialized today. I found out on you tube how simple it is to change the fluid simply by taking the line loose at the radiator, diverting it into a drain pan, run it in neutral and as you see a quart of dirty fluid enter the pan you pour in a clean quart and keep doing that until it shows up clean in the pan, shut the motor off, connect the line, and top off. I will change the filter once in a while also, but I will be changing fluid more often than I had in the past. So simple to do.

I purchased 12 quarts of Honda fluid from the USA, drained and refilled it (not flushed, about 3 quarts). I then did that twice more every 5,000km when I did the oil change. Now I do the drain/refill every 20,000km. It drives & shifts fine, we don't flog it. I'm undecided as to doing a filter change, they call it a sealed unit 😁.

If you do get your automatic transmission fluid changed, be sure they use the right fluid. I had mine changed with the filter as a requirement for my rebuilt warranty, and right after I did, the transmission made some horrible noises upon starting out after starting it up and it didn't shift as smoothly as it did before. So I later decided to change fluid myself, by disconnecting a line from the radiator and directing it into a drain pan. Then as the engine was idling in neutral I added new fluid to replace what I saw draining into the pan. When it ran clean I shut the motor off and then topped it off. No more noises. I think they might have used the wrong fluid. Mine took the PLUS 4, not the regular kind. Years later it began shifting hard and I changed the fluid, and then again not long after. I used the cheap synthetic kind (+4) and on the second time around, it shifted like new again, so I believe in clean fluid. Maybe some old fluid stays in the torque converter or something. The double flush worked for me. Shifts and sounds like a new transmission now.

A couple of years ago, I've had a catastrophic transmission failure - It started whining in 5th gear around 80-100km/h, almost as if the car had a turbocharger (but it was connected to the transmission, not the engine rpms). One day I was driving somewhere, around 200km away, and I stopped at a rest stop to get a coffee. I rolled to my parking space in neutral, using the rest of the momentum, then stopped the car and put it in first. When I wanted to continue driving, I couldn't get out of "first", only that the car also didn't go forwared when engaging the clutch - it started stalling just as if the parking brake was on (which it wasn't). I called a tow truck, and the car could only be moved with the clutch pedal pressed in. After mesing around some more, the gear shifter was free, so it could move into every shift position - only the transmission didn't shift gears, it was still stuck in 5th. The end of it was, I got it towed home to a shop nearby (I'm talking about 300m away from my home, so an easy walking distance), and then I ordered a used transmission from a car that got scrapped for 300€, had it replaced, and the car still drives today. That was quite the adventure! ;)

In my experience, the way you explained the CVT exchanges is pretty much how shops do automatics also (and probably manuals too). Unless they specialize in transmissions, a local shop probably won't get into a transmission much more than fluid, filters, torque converters, and minor valve body stuff. When I needed an automatic transmission for my Volvo, they quoted me the same $3500 as three different online sources I found (which looked like the places these shops do their exchanges with), and that's just for the transmission, not including installation. One thing to note about that tho, is that the same transmission was available for me to buy directly $3000, minus an $800 core charge to put it around $2200. Now think about that. The shop almost definitely gets their core charge when they exchange your broken transmission for a rebuilt one (especially if it's $800), and your car does get fixed, but do you, the customer, get a discount when you're the one providing the cored part? I'm not saying all shops do this, but it's something to consider if you get this kind of high-dollar work done.

I worked at a car dealer for Fords in 1978. One mechanic specialized in automatic transmissions, 1 fixed electrical gremlins, most did general repair, and the lowest guy did exhaust pipes and brakes. At 19 I was even lower- cleaning, running errands, changing tires. My advice for older vehicles- see the Carsthatlast series on KZread. For the last 8 years or new, go to a library and study the April issue of Consumer Reports magazine. Hoovie uses the get it cheap because it is known to be unreliable, hope it is an easy fix at first, then have several to lower the miles per year for each one.

It is now the first Tuesday of March 2021. The Car Wizard will hopefully do the next, all-new, buy this, not that video on vehicles with CVT/eCVT transmissions, which will be this afternoon. The Lexus CT200h is the number one vehicle to buy, because it has an eCVT transmission, any model year. They are very reliable and they are very fuel-efficient. My church pastor owns one and it is a very good vehicle. It is similar to a Toyota Prius, which the Car Wizard's daughter used to own. The other vehicle not to buy would be the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, because they styling looks hideous and it does not look like a crossover to most vehicular buyers and myself. It still does have the CVT transmission, compared to the newer Lancer sedan, but it requires a lot of maintenance to keep the vehicle, as reliable as possible. Thank you very much and good luck to the next upload video from the Car Wizard.

The common wisdom where I live is to just get rid of the car and cut your losses. Even if it's under warranty, just let them fix it, then trade it in. It's not worth the hassle and the risk because 95% of transmission jobs end in failure. Even replacing with a new one almost always fails in some near future. I knew a guy that had a new golf mk. 6, German built. He went through 6 gearboxes before he finally gave up and traded it back.

On the topic of transmissions, the 928 is also unusual because the unit is at the rear of the car driven by a torque tube from the front mounted engine. If memory serves, the clutch could also be replaced with the transmission in the car which I believe is somewhat unusual.

AAMCO said they could probably fix it but wanted to tear it down before giving us an estimate and would charge us $750 if we didn’t have it repaired. In the end we sold the car for parts and had to get a different one. The experience has made me very suspicious of CVTs... 🤨

When I was 17 (and I only figured the mechanical stuff out as I got older) my AC compressor started to lock up. The accessory belt kept going and started to burn up. I decided to drive home anyway despite the weird unexplained rubber smell and lack of AC. By the time I got home it was smoking rubber. Me being a genius used a garden hose to cool it off. Ended up needing a compressor, condenser, lines, belt, and a new tensioner. Internals of the compressor were found inside the condenser I had pushed it so hard. Moral of the story is I agree with the wizard; pull over, it's not worth fighting what's already broken.

The first movie. That one was just so much more moving than the others! Even though the theme song was the same, it was scored so much better than the rest. And even though I’m a fan of the Jurassic World movies, they barely even played the song except for MAYBE like 10-15 seconds at a time! I actually think the CGI was better in the first one too. It was probably something to do with the computers not being as powerful back then so they must have mixed old school practical effects tricks to hide their shortcomings. Anyway, another great show as usual Wizard! Keep them coming! Oh yeh, I’ve got a question for you this week: so I know from watching enough car shows, reading enough car literature (magazines and such) and hearing from enough word of mouth from people that Nissan CVT’s are the worst but I need to prove that point to my Dad to keep him from sticking my Mom with a 2004 Nissan Murano (with the 3.5L engine) for her “last car”. He’s got the money to get her whatever she wants new but he’s what he likes to call “frugal” (CHEEEAAAAAPPP!!!!!) and since I know what the general main fault (tranny) with the car is, could you please give me something more specific that fails with the transmission so I can point to it and get my Mom into something that she is more deserving of than a POS Murano!
