hi ariel, i posted this question earlier hoping an expert like yourself could help me out... could anyone explain where the chords come from please? i understand it's in e major, so shouldn't the 5th (B) be major? how comes it works that it's changed to minor?
@TheAlpineProject

+ Joe Brown It's not completely an Emaj (ionian) scale. It's centered most exactly around a Amaj/F#m, making it E in the 5th (mixolydian) mode of an Amaj scale. We don't call it Amaj in this case because that is not our tonic, or root, note. It's because of how the brain processes melodies that are near each other in time that we notice the subtle difference at all.

Thoroughly enjoyable!
Signs of an excellent teacher: 1) Lots of ground covered in the lesson 2) The right balance of expertise without being exclusionary 3) Patience and enthusiasm 4) A noticeable improvement in the student from the beginning of the lesson to the end 5) Inspiring the student Ariel is clearly an excellent teacher.

I'm so impressed that you have the balls to let these lessons be recorded'..... I can't imagine the pressure you're prob feeling to "get it right" - these are just fantastic.

Exactly that! The Captain is quite a humble dude it seems.... I'm almost in the same situation as him ....trying to "see" what others see.... You can feel it's there to be found.....just getting maybe one or two missing pieces and then it will all fall into place.
The Captain Pete is the Key to the success of this Channel. Because he represents us, the watchers. And when he struggles , we know we would too. That makes a huge identification with Pete , Andertons , and this Channel.

Singing the solo was such an awesome tip to make your playing sound more musical. Thanks Ariel.
Every person that plays any instrument other than percussion needs to see this and apply to their instrument. Playing melodies and make your instrument sing is the difference.
That white strat is the best kind of beaten up! Ariel is such a beast of a player.
You know Lee, your playing has gotten so much better over the course of these videos - it has really shown I tell you. Keep them coming!

Christian, I have only just seen this, and I was thinking exactly the same thing. Keep them coming Lee....and keep playing. Having these lessons will help you immensely.
Ariel is such a fresh discovery in my guitar journey. Very very talented guy!
Tastiest damn intro I ever heard!
The fact that the Captain makes mistakes is such a powerful message to all those guys who want to learn and think that because they don't get it the first time, they will never be able to get it. Great lesson and very inspiring! Thank you!!
I really hope these lessons and Pete's backing track offering DON'T stop. I've been playing for a long time, but damn! I've picked up so many great nuggets of info & ideas. Thanks!!
I am SO impressed that Lee allows himself to be filmed doing this. Fair play to him. Also - he sounded WAAAAAY better when he 'sang' what he was trying to play. Much more musical.
Lee’s playing has already improved over this series! The fact that he’s conscious about what he’s playing now more is making him better. Also, that intro by Ariel killed me lmao
I love this series. I’ve been an instructor for a while and watching students grow is so much fun. Keep it up Lee. Don’t be locked into the “too old” trope for anything. I’ve watched your progress, as have we all and it’s noticeable. It’s not easy, keep it up brother. As an added note, my wife picked up the bass a couple years back. She wasn’t confident, but she was persistent. She’s now an astonishingly good bassist and gets better all the time. She wasn’t too old to learn and grow neither are you. Enjoy the learning, don’t be put off by other people’s current ability or knowledge, be glad that you’re fortunate enough to be surrounded by it. Soak it up man.
I think this video highlights the main ideas that run through any guitarists' head. meaning we know we're improving because all of a sudden we can hear and play the exact idea we thought about the second before we hit the note(s). anyone watching this should feel glad they didn't give up because progress shows in subtle ways. never all at once
That was really cool to hear the immediate difference in musicality during the singing exercise, I'm gonna have to try that out soon... Great video guys!
21:51 that how I get when someone watches over my shoulder as I’m trying to type 😂 Great stuff Captain 👨✈️
Ariel is such a classy player and a good teacher. It's also nice that his view on things reaffirms some of the ideas I've had floating around my head about guitar playing.
Great lesson. Musicality. Phrasing. Dynamics. Space. Lee, you are our foot soldier.
Opening jam is so juicy!
The intro jam was the best couple minutes of my week
That change in 35 minutes was fucking astounding, like a whole new toolbox opened up, great stuff
Lee’s come on massively in these lessons. Even just in his understanding of stuff. I think I’m at a similar level of a ability (in terms of “theory”) to Lee and these lessons have helped me more than anything I’ve ever tried. Thanks guys and keep at it Lee.
You have some big balls for doing this Lee. Huge props. Ariel is an awesome teacher.
Playing guitar for donkeys years and still learning from these lessons..... Ariels explanations are crystal clear....great stuff......
What great analogies Ariel gives. I really like his method of teaching. Thank you, Lee, for putting yourself in that awkward spotlight so we all can benefit along with you, and asking all the questions we are all too embarrassed to ask. Awesome video!!
This was literally guitar gold. I learnt so much from this. Thank you!

Simply brilliant guys! Ariel is the main reason why I got into playing a baritone guitar. Cheers.
Good Heavens! That intro was superb. I could watch Ariel play all day long and the part explaining arpeggios was a big help. I feel the Captain's pain of being an older player lamenting not taking theory seriously when we were younger.
Thanks Lee for exposing yourself in honesty and thereby helping all us learners too.
Dude Ariel is a great teacher. This was so helpful
4 yrs late to understanding this video but I'm glad to be here.
This content is fantastic! So helpful and informative - thank you for doing this, I hope you do more!
I cannot get enough of these lessons! I love these videos! Keep them coming! Much love from Barcelona!
Keep these lessons coming. Awesome. Captn. You ask exactly the right questions that are in my head .
AWESOME!!! Please keep these lessons coming.
YOU GUYS ARE SO GOOD. Can you please PLEASE do more of these, this has been very valuable.
Absolutely love these videos ! Keep them coming ! Thanks for sharing the knowledge 🤠
Excellent stuff here....really great. Thank you both!!
Don't know if you hear this often Captain, but i love listening to you play. I find you play melodious and with feeling and it's very relaxing :)
Thanks heaps guys! This was precisely the lesson I needed. Am/was in exactly the same boat as you capt., so this was supremely helpful. Cheers!
Videos like these are so valuable. Someone teaching someone else live is so much more helpful than just tutorial videos. Thanks for this
"Sing your solo", "Play what your singing" Man! I've never looked at playing a solo on that perspective, kaboom! Mindblown thanks a lot guys, what a great lesson from Ariel.
Love this series and Ariel is a champ as always! I feel you Lee, but videos like these inspire and motivate me to keep working on making music. And I’d be a happy man to have some of the Captains’ licks in my fingers!
Great lesson guys! Thanks Ariel for great advice and thanks Captain for your honesty and willingness to learn
Thank's guys for such a good moment. Pas le melon le captain, j'adore! Plus de vidéos de ce genre, c'est un plaisir!!!
Absolutely love these and Pete’s lessons. I’ve been stuck in a rut for so long and these have helped. Also, huge kudos to the Captain for doing these lessons. So hard to display flaws publicly. Keep it up guys.
Really enjoyed that lesson ... I have to say I'm learning all,the time from u guys
These videos are SO helpful. I loved Ariel as a guitar teacher. Such great insight! Thanks for doing this. And to the captain: respect for getting out there and put yourself in the spotlight. Your "struggle" is actually very helpful for others to watch.
Thanks for the video guys, it has literally opened me a lot of doors! I was stuck exactly where you were, Lee and it has helped me in so many ways...
Captain my Captain, this is so awesome. Not because you did a wonderful job, even though you did, but to put yourself out there like this is amazing.
Very cool video. Much respect to the Captain for being able to do this in front of an audience! This is totally going to help me improve my playing as well.
Thanks for posting this lesson. So helpful!
An absolute eye opener for somebody that is new and wants to progress..Thanks guys for such an inspirational lesson..Keep up the good work Lee your playing is getting awesome !!
I guess i should start practicing again. That Posen guy is catching me again.
BRAVO! What a great lesson it went by fast but there's gold in here... Props to both the Captain and Ariel.
I think this will be the best breakthrough for captain, especially the singing solo part. Great job!
Ariel is such a great man...and a great player! This thing of singing what you're playing is very intresting, i'll keep it in mind!
This series is absolutely awesome! I hope it never ends. Ariel is an awesome teacher. Plus i could listen to him play for days.
The best lesson I've ever seen. PERIOD. Thank you.
I love these videos! As a guitar teacher myself it’s great to hear these ideas and techniques. Top job chaps!
I freaking love this series. I always find a disconnect between between the things in music theory that i know and trying to apply them on guitar. The little pieces of knowledge I get from theses are invaluable. I hope they continue for a long long time.
This session was gold dust. Bravo.
Brilliant lesson, brilliant teacher/player,VERY brave student; Well done Lee !!
Please keep these up, I'm learning more along with these videos as well!
Lee I’m exactly where you are. Love these lessons because it hits home so much. Thank you for keeping these going. Who cares if you make mistakes because you are making progress! Great stuff!
What a great player. He is a real pleasure to listen to.
these video's are amazing! I really learn a lot from it! keep it going guys
Lee, your playing is fucking light years from where it was when I first starting watching. These lessons are amazing and you’ve got balls for letting these be recorded directly. Thanks for sharing man, enjoy the journey!
Whoa, singing (or whistling) along is blowing my mind! Im not always playing the notes in my head, sometimes my fingers are running the show. Thanks guys!
Ariel Posen is a great musician. I highly rate his ability and the soulful expression in his playing. The bonus is that he is able to communicate concepts clearly.
That intro tho...
Wow! Make that thing sing..... Incredible playing!
Ariel is even better than ever now!
Great video. I've learnt more stuff from that guy in an hour than I ever thought my old brain could handle.
Oh Captain, my captain... that was awesome. Ariel Posen is AMAZING! Great video! Thank you...
A lesson here for students and teachers alike. Kudos to Lee for putting himself out there. Love the content!
Totally digging these lesson Videos!
My god, all the hats in the world off to Lee. Very courageous to sit next to Ariel and Pete for youtube lessons. This has been very entertaining, educational and inspiring!
This might just be the greatest guitar lesson on KZread. Well done guys 👍
what a pleasure to watch to watch you two I don't play myself but this is cool fellows
This is great & he's a great teacher. His point around 15 min is so important -- *hearing* what you're up to on the fretboard. It's so easy to lapse into a tactile focus where you're just feeling your way through scale patterns.
This put so many things into perspective......THANK YOU!
Great lesson from Ariel! Man, Captain is sounding better with every lesson
Best lesson ive had!! Good man 🎸❤
Thanks, my playing deficiencies are like the captains. This helps. Ariel is a beast! I wish I could have an hour lesson from him once a week or even twice a month.
This probably was one of the most inspiring lessons I ever watched on KZread land. Thanks guys! Great looking white strat btw.
These video lessons are super cool. Ariel is a great teacher.
I love how Lee develops these young men and gives them a spotlight to develop themselves and their careers, showcases their talent and turns them into successful human beings before sending them off into the world to learn to fly on their own. He's a great man and i'm sure a great father...
These vids are great inspiration. I'm 48 now and have been playing since 1983 and have visited many ruts over the years and these have got me out of my latest one 😂
You guys are awsome! Nice video as always
Wow, that intro was a pure magic, thanks for a great lesson!
I get a lot from these session vids. Please keep revisiting these every once in a while.
Very good lesson It so much better when you’re watching a video lesson with an actual student asking all the right questions I would ask!! Keep on learning captain...its good for us :)
While I was studying electronics in school, many moons ago, I had to learn a great deal of mathematics. For a brief, shining semester or two, calculus became a language for me, and I was able to write about motion through time at a very elementary level, including pictures. I will never forget that experience, nor the amount of time and effort to get to that point. Lee and Ariel, thanks so much for taking this lesson in that direction - "language" in whatever modality is our purest form of self expression, which is why I love music so much. I just wish I was more interested in guitar in my youth.
Break out of the boxes, arpeggiate the chords, think in terms of intervals... I've heard all that explained before. But how do you bring that all in an organic way that you can relate to 'feeling' and intuition? I believe this lesson answered that question. Ariel is undoubtedly an inhumanly talented musician but he's one heck of a great teacher too. So so so good. I appreciate that Lee put himself out there in all his vulnerability. That helped immensely too. But he did often hinder Ariel from explaining a concept wholesomely. Just as Ariel was about to drive a point home, the Captain would steer the ship in a whole new direction! Still, this is possibly one of the best lessons I've ever watched. There were so many KABOOM moments. I believe it opened many doors for me. It's gonna take a lot of work but I finally have a sense of purpose and direction. I am so eager now to make a million million mistakes because I know they'll make me a better musician and player. Ariel and Lee, thank you so so so much for this. If ever you hear about a middle-aged guitarist out of Bhutan finally make a mark, know that you guys made a significant contribution in his musical journey.
Great lesson, spot on!
Great video lesson. Playing for years and years but been really lazy and am to old to put the time into learning scales over and over...Downloaded the backing track and sat playing my home made Strat and the video over and over.Been here all day enjoyed it that much. More like this please.
As you recalled it's about telling a story. It's good to remember, sometimes we get lost in all the technical stuff. I mean that's good to know what you're playing but you this is so cool when we can use this vocabulary in a musical way. Merci for the lesson, this is well put on screen !
