The AE1 came out in 1976 , the AE1 Program in 1981 and the A-1 in 1978. I've just stumbled across your channel and, I'm impressed! The T90 replaced the A-1 in 1986. The EOS system came out in 1987. I'm showing my age now, so I'll shut up,!

I happen to have inherited this exact setup. Great grandfather bought it new in the 70s and passed it down to my uncle, who have since allowed me to take care of it. Currently testing the waters with it, using Kodak Ultramax 400. Hope the pictures turn out okay!

I enjoyed the video. I got my EF in 1976 and after using it I seldom picked up my older FTb. I still have my EF but many years back while on vacation I was cleaning the mirror and not realizing I was damaging the focus screen so it is not usable now, wish I had been more careful. Your video renewed my interest so I ordered an EF I found online for sale. Hope it is serviceable and I will enjoy it as I did my original EF back in the 70s. Thanks again for your great post.

That camera was from sort of a "golden age" when photography, including home darkrooms was a very popular hobby. Back in those days I used a manual Mamiya/Sekor 35mm SLR and shot miles of Plus-X and Tri-X. Well not literally miles. I had a Watson bulk loader like that and bought 35mm film in 100 foot rolls. I built a darkroom in the corner of the garage and used an Omega enlarger. Then school got really busy and photography fell by the wayside. I love my flat caps, but when it's that cold, I gotta get something on my ears.

I had not heard of this camera before, so thanks for the info. The ability to work without battery is indeed novel for the era that this camera was in production, as Nikon did not bring out the limited run but superb FM3a which operates on a dual/hybrid shutter system till 2001, very much against the trend, and I believe it was only for the Japanese market. The 2nd hand prices of the FM3a are an indication of how popular a camera which is not reliant on battery is amongst the serious photographers. If I had any Canon FD lenses, this camera would have been on my shopping list.

  • @martinjones1390

@@martinhensonphotography I would be wary of storing the bulk loader with film in the fridge as you are likely to get moisture condensing on and inside the bulk loader while it is out of the fridge. Then when you put the loader back in the fridge before it is completely dried, inside and out, the moisture will likely cause problems with film inside the loader. I load multiple cassettes at a time and place them inside their plastic canisters and then inside zip-lock bags before placing them in the fridge. If I cannot use all of the film in the loader at one time I place the remainder of the bulk film back in it's original tin and seal the seam with tape before another ziplock bag and into the fridge. Don't forget to allow films taken from the fridge to come up to room temperature before removing them from their containers. May take an hour or two. A tin of bulk film out of the fridge will take considerable time to come up to temp before you can shift it into a bulk loader. Best to leave it overnight.

  • @martinjones1390
    @martinjones13902 жыл бұрын

I think that you forgot to mention another feature of the EF that was a first for Canon - the use of silicon photocell metering to replace the CdS cells used in earlier Canon SLR's. This provided much quicker metering response as well as greater sensitivity. A moot point though if you are manually exposing using an external meter. The Copal Hybrid vertical shutter also allowed the highest flash sync speed of any Canon SLR until the T90 came out over 10 years later. From what I have seen from old price lists the EF wasn't a great deal cheaper than the F1n and was much more expensive than the AE-1 which replaced it. (I bought my first AE-1 as a Christmas present to myself in 1978. As a young fellow, chasing the latest technology was important in those days.) I acquired an EF in excellent condition about 10 years ago and immediately sent it in to my favourite serviceman, ex Canon trained, for a CLA and it should be good for years to come. I took it out a couple of days ago with several lenses, including the FD 50mm f1.4 SSC, to test some bulk loaded Fomapan 200 I have had in the fridge for several years. Not my favourite film but I bought it out of curiosity. The Canon lens performed flawlessly but in the late afternoon sun here in Australia I couldn't get an exposure with the aperture wider than f5.6. I only had a yellow filter which required an extra stop of exposure. I have some bulk loaded Ilford Pan-F in the fridge so I'll be taking a roll of that out soon to explore shooting that lens wide open and I'll still probably need a red filter to soak up another 3 stops of exposure. I like that changing bag tent you have. Those Paterson Super System 4 tanks are quite bulky compared to the earlier System 4 tanks. It's a bit of a snug fit in my current changing bag. Would be even worse with the newer style 3 reel Paterson tanks. I have been scanning my negs for over 10 years now. 35mm negs go through a Nikon Coolscan 5000 whilst I use an Epson V700 for medium format. I found the noise that the Nikon scanners make quite disturbing at first - sort of a cross between an outboard motor and a chainsaw when scanning at higher resolutions. The Nikon Coolscan is ruthlessly precise when scanning slightly grainy negatives but I love it. May have to investigate the family of staining pyro developers soon. I'm enjoying all of you videos and when the budget allows I will be upgrading my post processing software on my computer and purchasing your Contrast grading tutorial. I don't know if I can use your techniques on my current software - ancient Photoshop CS2. Thank you and keep the videos coming.

  • @martinhensonphotography

Thanks for the history makes this beautiful camera more interesting. Just out of curiosity are you using Nikon scan 4 as your scanning software, if so I struggled with harsh grain, was pretty bad, then I discovered a way around that by scanning in raw gamma 1 removing the awful Nikon profile that was causing the accentuated grain in the scans, the result was great scans with normal grain, the downside scanning this way , you need another PS plugin called ColorPerfect to convert the raw negative file from a negative to a positive, I also work this way using VueScan. Don't let the scanner make any adjustments, scan raw And yes my Contrast Grading can be used in CS 2

@@martinhensonphotography Yes, I am using Nikon Scan 4 under Windows 10. I'm afraid I haven't really progressed much beyond the default settings. I also have Vuescan which I mainly use with an Epson V700. I'm gong to revisit your scanning videos and try scanning in raw. Good news that ColorPerfect works with PS CS2 as this makes the whole exercise a lot cheaper for me. This may present me with a dilemma if it improves my work. How am I going to rescan my earlier work? VERY SELECTIVELY !!! Once again, thanks for your advice.

Hi Martin, nice inspiring video. You said the EF is one of the best Canon MF camera, did you ever testet a T90? That one rocks due to spot metering

No I have not used the T90, I am comparing with other 35mm camera I have and used in the past, I have no doubt the T90 is also a great camera, thanks

@@martinhensonphotography I don't want to enter this video for making ads for the T90, but it's a nice place to tell two main facts which I do love, fist one is spot metering with average building and the use of 4 simple AA batteries. Of course you will have the wide range of all those Wonderfull Canon MF lenses. I always wanted a 35mm camera with a correct spot metering and with the T90 I found it :-)

@@martin-f5482 I own two bodies of the T90. I almost use exclusively the in camera Spotmeter. In both bodies the Spotmeter is dead on with my Pentax Spotmeter V (calibrated by Quality Light shop in California). I bought the two bodies from eBay almost 12 years ago, in mint condition, but still got them CLA'ed. They still work like new. Never had any issue with the EEE error, people talk about online. I followed the advice of the technician who performed the CLAs, when not in use for a long period of time, I take them out and fire them blank, in all modes (single, continuous high and low), time to time. It has to do with the electromagnet that can get stuck if not in use for a very long time, if I remember well what he told me. When stored, I keep them in a Ziploc bag with little packets of silica, same with my FD lenses. After so many years I am still not familiar with all the functions and capabilities of this camera, that use mainly for landscape photography, and birds photography when hooked to my FD 500 mm F4.5 L tele lens, as I shoot always in manual mode. The first person who called it "the tank", was absolutely right. What a piece of engineering. The way you feel it in your hand, it's ergonomic design, oh my Gosh!!! I am just in love with it With my T90, my FD lenses, my Gitzo tripod, and my Fuji Velvia/Provia, my tent, out there in the nature, I am the happiest man in the world, with shots or without shots in the bag..let's all keep film and these old camera alive.

You don't mention Martin that the EF also has shutter speed priority automatic exposure that's selected by setting the lens ro "A" then selecting the speed.

S.S.C Martin means Super Spectra Coated, the Canon F1 doesn't have the same voltage compensation circuit as the EF and you can't use PX 625A batteries in it because it won't give correct exposures , I have both models , The filter size on the S.S.C 1.4 lens is 55mm. They Call the Canon EF "Black Beauty".

Great video. I have fond memories of the EF. I had one brand new when it came out. Very simple to use. You are a real Film photographer. Loading bulk film. Developing it etc. Not like hipsters of today who treat a film Camera as a piece of male jewellery with their long hair tied in a pony tail. Loved watching you work. You could do it in your sleep.

Not sure why everyone reviews the older breach lock. Maybe it's the metal or the SSC in red, but the nFD 50 1.4 & the 1.8 are lighter and with the same coatings. With a bayonet mount. I'm having a mirrorless M converted to full spectrum and I got the 1.4 for digital B&W.
