The Call of Everest | Conrad Anker | Talks at Google

Спорт

On June 3rd, 2016 Conrad spoke at Google about the history, science and future of climbing the world's highest peak.
Conrad Anker has summited Mount Everest three times. On his first summit he discovered the body of George Mallory, the legendary British climber. On his third summit he didn't use supplemental oxygen. He was featured in the film Meru, about the first ascent of the Shark's Fin route of the Indian Himalayas.
This Talk was hosted by Monica Poletti.

Apparently Mr. Anker has not studied Mallory's 1924 expedition as much as he ought to. If he had he'd likely come to a much different conclusion. I believe today 99.9% Mallory and Irvine made the summit and they traversed below the ridge avoiding the so called "steps" entirely. They followed a variation of Norton's route. The last man to see them alive was Odell and he testified he saw them at the base of the summit pyramid! That is past the difficult sections and the above the couloir. They died from a fall coming down because they ran out of light, oxygen and suffering exposure to the elements,, but its highly probable they summited!

Amazing seeing how they were able to climb in ANTIQUE gear. Oh, and THE SMOKING! Really, a true feat. And, I happen to think Mallory made it, where else would the picture be he was gonna plant!? Guess, will always remain a mystery unless someone digs down 10 ft of snow on the summit lol. Might be a bit too hard at that altitude :D Great vid, been on a climbing kick last couple weeks, very very interesting stuff! And ALL the haters on KZread is AMAZING, these people who make these comments would be the ones reaching the khumbu and either cry or turn around..... People always hate those at the top, clear example of it. Congrats to ALL who have scaled these peaks and i admire your vision and courage. We all know it's not easy. TY Conrad and Google! Stay safe out there!

Sadly the Nepalese (in particular) are desperately poor and cannot afford to go without the cash that climbing Everest (and the other 8000 metre plus mountains many of which are in Nepal) brings in. Some of the operators who "guide" the climbers should be more careful who they take - too many people don't know what they are getting into and don't have the necessary experience.

Conrad you cannot say Mallory and Irvine didn't make the summit in 1924 …… you qualified that by saying that is your belief but you don't know and therefore should not make a definite statement like that. Mallory was a great lead climber …. exceptional …. and extremely determined. Until Irvine's body is found, we just do not know and even then there maybe no clues or proof either way. For the record, having studied the expedition, I too doubt whether they made the summit. But I would never say they did not because we just don't know. I hope they did though and that one day their camera that could be with Irvine's body might just prove that.

Since Everest is still getting taller then when you summit you have stood at a higher level (if you actually go right to the highest point which most people don't) than any other human has including Sir E and any other legendary climber that has lived; when you leave and the next person summits then technically they stood higher above the earth than you and every other person and so on.

44:51 There is one new technology that can be potentially beneficial to mountain climbing, in fact life saving. I just saw it a few days ago on youtube that this device called "Jet Suit", developed by a company called Gravity Industries based in the UK, is being tested for multiple usages including rescue missions by paramedics and special operations by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, basically it flies you for a short distance and it looks just like the Jetpack from Sci-Fi movies. Currently this thing is still pretty large so carrying it to climb a mountain is impractical, but I believe just like cellphone was huge back in the 80s, overtime as technology improves it will get smaller, and carrying it as your life-saving insurance won't be a big deal in the future. Just imagine even if you slip and fall off the mountain you can simply turn on your Jet Suit and fly back up the climbing route to rejoin other climbers like nothing ever happened, wouldn't that be great news for mountaineers?

What evidence is there that Mallory & Irvine didn't summit? What the hell does 'protection' have to do with any of it? Because he wasn't wearing a Gore Tex coat he couldn't have made it after weeks of being there? Just because it's incomprehensible to this goofball does not make it impossible. Those guys had serious balls and if it was possible, they did it. The things they accomplished are inconceivable to Anker which is exactly why they are legends and pioneers and why he is just another decent climber. Hell, the reason anybody even knows the guys fucking name is because he stood in the presence of George Mallory 80 years after he died!! Trust me, if this clown could climb the second step, George Mallory could have and he likely did. To say Irvine and Mallory didn't make it is purely conjecture and I call bullshit. We have a tendency to be dismissive of things that happened a long time ago and it is extraordinarily arrogant to take an authoritative position on something controversial when there's no evidence to support your claims. Take Jesse Owens, for instance. Only about .002 seconds slower than the fastest person to ever live when you adjust for the cinder track he ran on. They were spotted making toward the second step and then what? They turn around? Please. Those dudes were fuckin full of grit and pioneering spirit. Mallory survived trench warfare and was roundly considered to be the best climber of his day. It's real easy to sit back a hundred years later and arrogantly dismiss his life's work with the wave of a hand because you *think* you couldn't do it how they did it, so surely they too could not do it.

( climbing Mount Everest ) etc.etc. It's usually pretty clear which one the "goofball" is
