The California of Brazil: First day in Florianópolis! 🇧🇷

First impressions of Florianopolis! (Or Floripa as the locals say).
This Brazilian city is underrated, and is often overlooked by international travelers, although very popular amongst the South Americans.
Check out our reaction to this Island of Magic as we explore the historical Centre, and indulge on delicious Brazilian food at the Mercado Público de Florianópolis (Public Market).
Stay tuned for more Brazil travel vlogs, including Brazilian food vlogs, and some deep dives into the history and culture of Brazil. Of course, we will be heading over to Rio De Janeiro for some beach life (and more drinking and dancing, we'd imagine) and then into the Amazon rainforest to capture some wildlife. So, in the end, lots more good content to come from Brazil!
Subscribe from more vlogs from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Florianópolis, Salvador, Bahia, the Amazon, and more!
TIMESTAMPS:

    Sorry, but Floripa is not California, it's Rio de Janeiro, because it's the city in Brazil that is most similar (communist, full of slums, crimes, poor and drug addicts on the streets and where people don't like to work). Florianopolis is Florida.

    I moved to Floripa with my partner from London 4 months ago, we are living in the north of the island. We traveled to other regions of Brazil, there is no place like this city. Here is where my partner (who is from UK) felt most welcomed and relaxed, no pushy sellers and no "gringo" prices, the locals are just so friendly and polite. The vibes are incredible, so chilled, it one of the safest cities in Brazil, also the nature here is well preserved, astonishingly beautiful. The more the time passes the more in love we are with the Magic Island. We made a very happy decision.

    The apple vendor was explaining that that type of apple originally come from Japan (I believe is called Fuji Apple). As you saw on Liberdade, many japanese people (also italian and german) came to Brazil from around 1890 to 1950. With the 2nd WW, the descendants from the Axis nations, were banned from living on the coast side of Brazil and were remanaged to the country side of the south/southeast regions, which greatly improved the agriculture, since the first families which arrived here were probably families involved in the agriculture business in their original countries. So, today, many big brands of fruits, vegetables and cattle markets are named after these families. In fact, I have distant members of my family which are one of the main producers of banana in Brazil and worldwide.

    Fun fact about Florianópolis: The island's actual name is Ilha de Santa Catarina (Isle of Santa Catarina) and before the city's name was Nossa Senhora do Desterro (Our Lady of the Exile). At that time (1891-1894) the president was Floriano Peixoto, better known as Marechal de Ferro (Iron Marshal), and one day he was discontented with the islander's behavior because he was a federalist and some of the people of Desterro didn't like him so he invaded the city and killed 200 of them and forced the governor, Hercílio Luz, to make the city the capital and name it Florianpólis which means City of Floriano. I love that you guys are exploring other parts of Brazil. You'll see that Santa Catarina is very distinct, especially if you look at its interior. Some nice cities to visit are: Pomerode, Blumenau, Joinville, Balneário Camboriú, Brusque, São Francisco do Sul, Nova Trento, São Joaquim and Bom Jardim da Serra. I am from Santa Catarina, my family has been here for more than 100 years. They came from Germany and Italy and also natives, our state or country haha is beautiful, enjoy your stay. Have fun and God bless.

  • @lfsg689

    @lfsg689

    Thank you for reminding the history of the city. But in fact Floriano wasn't a "federalist". The rebels of the Navy that left Rio to join the Federalist Revolution in the south, to fight Floriano's dictatorship, established in the Isle of Santa Catarina their "revolutionary government". They were defeated and killed by Floriano, who gave the city his infamous name.
