The Cahaba Incident

The M/V Cahaba was a tugboat that got sucked under a bridge on the Tombigbee river many years ago. The drawbridge didn't open in time and the currents were very strong with a high water level on the river. Miraculously, the Cahaba emerged on the other side of the bridge and righted herself back on top of the water. One engine remained running afterwards.

I viewed that video many years ago. It was a miracle. The skipper had to do his laundry right after the incident!

This is a (pusher) TOWBOAT, not a tugboat.
Aw, that's happened to me many times. Only, I wasn't driving a tugboat, wasn't in the water, and I hit my head so hard that it *seemed* I was still afloat.
I bet he wrote help in his shorts!!!

They were well prepared too. Only the captain stayed on board, the crew were on the barges. All safety doors were closed. And there was concrete in the bottom to make the boat self-righting.

Not the way I'd do it but I suppose we can't confine ourselves to simple methods 😂

"Weebles wobble but they don't fall down" - Weebles have a heavy weight at the bottom that keeps them upright - ths tug had several tons of cement ballast in the bottom of her hull. Imagine being the guy driving the boat - who was still at the sticks when she came up.

fuel,water,oil.not cement.engines below deck also

@@targfu Sorry. Cement. Fuel and oil would not act as ballast - they'd actually increase bouyancy,

@@fairportfan2 i rode boats 19 years,road these very boats.no cement in hull.,take on fuel,water lube oil inside hull adds much weight.noy buoyancy

That boat is now named the tombigbee and is still operating it definitely doesn’t have cement in it towboats have water ballast tanks

"The drawbridge did not open in time", says the description on KZread. That was not the problem. The barges were deliberately pushed through a fixed part. The safest way. The tug was disengaged and was to go through the lifting section, but that maneuver went wrong.
