The CAD Audio Equitek E100Sx (4th Generation) mic review

This mic has been around awhile and has both a unique shape and a unique sound. CAD Audio recently came out with the 4th generation version and I got a chance to review it.

    CAD Audio sells a foam pop filter designed for the E100sx and E40. Another viewer recently reported that they were no longer selling it directly but you could buy it from distributors. I would check with CAD Audio for availability. I have also found a pop filter that worked ok (a little fiddly but then you just leave it in place). It was made by Moukey and appears to be discontinued. If you search for "HyperX QuadCast Microphone Pop Filter - Metal Panel", this appears to be an exact copy. It's a curved metal pop filter. That's as a possible alternative.

    Hi, and thanks for your comment. I've had several viewers ask about that particular boom arm, but I do NOT recommend it. It looks good but it has some issues. However, I'm currently using the Mackie DB-200 boom arm and really love it. Looks good, works well.

    I just acquired an E100SX. Now where do I find a stand to fit it? Preferably a desktop type stand. I am new to studio microphones. Need some recommendations.

  • @MatthewHaines

    @MatthewHaines

    Ай бұрын

    There are two standard size threads for microphone stands, and I believe the E100sx comes with an adapter ring. That means you can buy pretty much any mic stand and it should work just fine. Desktop stands tend to send vibration up from the desk into the microphone. Having a shock absorber like the E100sx has can eliminate some of that, but not all. On the plus side, desktop stands take up less space. If you're recording at your desk, I recommend a boom arm and - for even more isolation from vibration - mount it to something other than your desk. You can see a boom arm in many of my videos. I like the Mackie DB-200 that I'm currently using.

    @@marktaylor9771 The good news is that they are inexpensive on Amazon and other places. Search for "mic stand adapter" or "mic thread adapter". You want the 5/8 to 3/8 kind, not the kind that mounts to camera tripod. Four for $8. Although if you buy a stand, it might come with one.

    @@MatthewHaines Yeah, I was surprised too. The thing I like about the voice with foam is it seems to smooth the sound out, if that makes sense. Weird. The one I have does not sound quite as dark as this one, but that could be my voice, the room, signal path, blah blah blah. Interesting mic though.

    @@MatthewHaines No, I just received mine this past week. My guess is it is one of the other possible variants. Could even be the distance I recorded from mic. Hard to say. Still, I like the sound and am sure it will find some use. Nice you compared it to the sE 2200 - great one to compare it to in order to highlight the 'dark' qualities of the Sx vs the more flat low/mid nature of the 2200.

    I have the foam and did the roll off...but still popped on some words. I am using the foam and a metal pop filter. The foam protects the microphone from dust.
