According to the facts and insight of the "Hikayat" or a story having spiritual meaning, i am skeptic about its buddisht origin. This must be a part of Sufi Lolk Tales told by a Sufi Saint to his disciples. And the fourth wife can only be "Rooh" Soul not mind. I really give credit to Matt for making it publicially available.

Excellent illustration .....however, the third wife should have to be defined as status we have maintained in the society, meaning as a mother, farther, sister, brother or mayor or president or a king. The fourth wife is better translated as (Sankara)karmic energy that we accumulated throughout our life time by way of words, deeds and mental formations.

Fourth wife is NOT the mind! It is the Soul, Atman, consciousness, Self. The mind is one layer of us. The deepest and last final layer that has all the fingerprints of the other 3 Koshas is the Soul. The Soul/Self collects the karma.

The soul is always present - whether there is karma or not, but if you have not been able to free your mind, then there is karmic balance left to be addressed which keeps the soul bound to the material realm.

It's not just a man who could have multiple partners but a woman too. This is noted in some of the epics - mythological stories from India. In the "heavenly" realms, where the deities or spirit life force behind certain elements of nature resided, there were also celestial nymphs who were not exclusive to any one deity. In fact, in the most auspicious bygone eons, the notion of marriage did not exist because possessiveness was not a character trait that existed in the beings that were present then. Only with the degradation of the ages, came the social norms and male chauvinism we see today in the world.

We do not take our minds with us, not all of us and not all of it. Those gifted among us with fine minds, with talents, artistic and musical creativeness, scientific and mathematical gifts, and good natures who make contributions to others, who teach others how to improve their lives, leave their works and ideas behind them with us in many differing forms, not the least of which are the good opinions and gratitude of others.
