The Buddhist Attitude to Sensuality | Ajahn Brahm | 19-01-2007

Ajahn Brahm discusses both the perceived dangers and pleasures of sensuality, and a Buddhist approach to understanding the sensuality of the world. Denial of the senses, labelling them evil or even completely prohibiting sense indulgence is not the Buddhist way. Meditation and mindfulness allow practitioners to deal with sensuality wisely, particularly if it is destructive to oneself or others.

Thanks for your Advice. I'd rather have success in this live because a live after death is totaly uncertain, even if millions of religious people say there is one. Its still a uncertain theory. So im better staying on the "save side" and enjoy this life now. love and light

Love the way how the traditional perception of good and evil, is re-interpreted as skillfulness and unskillfulnsss. I believe this helps anyone in the practice of trying to better themselves to deal with psychological barriers caused by guilt and the frustration and demotivation that follows! Many merits to and my heartfelt respect to Ven. Ajhan Brahm for his immense dedication and invaluable contribution towards uplifting the Buddhist philosophy, hence spreading peace, harmony and wisdom across different nations and communities!🙏🙏🙏

Starting where you brush your teeth in different places not only breaks the robotic pattern it is also the case that you probably start out brushing thoroughly and then slack off toward the end. If you brush in the same order all the time then you end in the same area and that area is always the one where you are not brushing thoroughly.. So changing the order in which you brush your teeth can help you to brush better. Also trying to remain mindful while brushing will help you to not slack off as you go along.

Not everyone is content with Ajahn Brahm's talks. No matter, one can pick a lot of things, a nugger here and there, which will really improve your perspective. I used to be a neurotic control-freak - now I learned to let go. This "letting go" is essential in practice for jhana and samadhi. Climbing to Nirvana, one step at a time.

Btw, Nirvana, Heaven, Nothingness and Enlightenment are four words for the same thing. Its a huge shift in your perception. Its like watching a movie and you are everything in the movie itself at the same time. You feel that everything your body can percieve is in fact your real body. You cannot locate yourself anymore because you are everwhere/thing. Theres a huge amount of freedom, peace and well-being. This spontanous awakening lastet ca 3 hours for me.

Whilst the video stopped at 34 minutes, what I heared was excellent. The middle way of mindfulness (recollection, full acknowledgement and examination) and wisdom (reflection on the benefits and dangers)was as expected discussed in an open, skillful and accessable way by Ajahn Brahm. Ajahn Brahm, a blessing to the world, an heir to the Dhamma.

There is no good or evil. The concern is whether or not someone is causing harm to another. He said pedophilia is harmful. Buddhist philosophy: Do not harm yourself or others. Harming others only causes pain and it doesn't benefit anyone.

Helma. I think Ajahn Brahm is using the examples so he can highlight the Buddhist approach of developing wisdom regarding what is harmful and what is beneficial. By using the examples, I think AB is attempting to open up the mind of the audience and remove their fears. The Buddha taught modesty. Monks and nuns shave their heads and wear robes as a form of de-emphasising their sexuality. I am glad you have an interest in Buddhist wisdom.

Ajahn Brahm has amazing wisdom and deep insight. One suggestion if I may. When some of us try to set an affirmation using a negation, our unconscious may get confused. Perhaps for an untrained mind "I will not pickup that cigarette" can be interpreted by the unconcious as "I will pickup that cigarette". It has been said that the unconscious gets confused with processing negations like NOT. Unless of course it is a trained mind.

you also forget the point that he is trying to convey when he points out "suppression of the sense" that if you do not understand why you are suppressing the urge of a sense you explode, as he is relating the story of his mentor to the audience which is key to the point of the topic at hand

I try to guard against them best I can. If I am cursed for my best efforts, it does not matter, for I do not strive because I desire the blessings of any Divinity, I strive simply because I understand, it is Good to strive against Evil in any form. B/c Evil creates suffering for me & others.

I didn't seek to claim that there is no self, just that what we would recognise as the self is not what is reborn, its more like that this life and previous lives karma sets what we come back as. Thankyou for the link i have had a quick look and will go back for a more thorough look later. I follow Tibetan buddhism and i guess you follow Theravadan, so we will be heading in the same direction but on slightly different paths :) Yes, there are good and bad Sanga just as with everything.

Enlightment is a thing achived by man. If a guy is a doctor he could be recognized easily by the way he talks. Same way I am asking for some sort of a guideline to recognize the enlightened ones. Since gaining enlightment is a much tougher task than getting a univeristy degree, there should be ways and means of recognizing one!

When you wake up in the morning do you need to be told you're awake? It's not a case of "well done, you've worked hard you wont suffer from now on" when you have ceased suffering you are enlightened. When you are fully awake you don't do things that cause yourself suffering. We call this state enlightenment.

i wonder what his thoughts on people who are in open relationships would be. he says that sleeping with others besides your partner hurts others but what about in the cases where both partners realize that lust for others will arise and agree to an open relationship? i've seen people argue that monogamy is in fact an extreme state that humans force on themselves in spite of their nature so maybe this would actually be another type of 'middle way.'

In addition to the below comments, I just want to say that each major branch of Buddhism deals with the issue of scripture in a very different way, and that the belief that simply practicing meditation is enough is rather a vague generalization about the Mahayana school, which is not of which this monk belongs to.

As long as there's a body there's karma. Good or bad are only labels. Enlightenment is letting go of being captured by these concepts. There's a story of a buddhist master that became very ill at old age. To his worried disciples he just said, that he had to pay off his karma. He was not suffering. I advise everybody to live by "Do no harm, do good, purify your mind - this is the teaching of the Buddha". But enlightenment is beyond this concept of good and bad and karma.

I think rahula is a little too simplified on some areas, which can lead to confusion. For example, his translation of annatta as 'no soul' as opposed to 'not self'. I would reccomend buddhist thought by paul williams, its a little more academic, but still light and easy reading.

Sometimes Friend, some "Buddhists" can seem to be more Christian-like that some "Christians". Likewise, some "Christians" can be more pure shining examples of "Buddhists" than some Buddhists. Do you understand what I am saying? Life is too complex to think that we can simply put things into black & white, up & down. The things which help us are 1. Humbleness, 2. Patience (w/everyone) 3. Sincere desire to find truth, peace & love. SINCERITY is the key in any faith. Let us all be sincere. : )

I completely agree, I just wanted to contrast the Nirvana with the Mahayana ideal of the Bodhisatva. As you say, 'so many bits to fix'. But... why no talking about the peak? You can still refer to it, even if you haven't had a look from the top. Talking about how the view is there - that would be phony and confuse people.

@HarmoniousHom - be careful what you say friend. It is a sin to utter falsehoods. It may be forgiven if you spoke out of ignorance and you admit it. Thou shalt not lie. That is quite explicit in the list. One may be forgive if one repents. God be with you and your kind.
