The brutal cost of Williams’s shocking F1 crash streak

Спорт

The start of the Formula 1 season has been particularly unkind for Williams - with a run of three major crashes across two far-away weekends in Melbourne and Suzuka placing a massive burden on the rebuilding outfit.
In addition to the heavy financial brunt of the accident itself and the embarrassment of running just one car in the Australian GP, Williams won't be able to to escape the major knock-on effects - from the exaggerated travel costs (particularly unwelcome in the cost cap era) and ramped-up workload to the potential effects on its overall 2024 development.
Join us for a closer look at its very particular situation.

It reminds me of the 2009 f1 season with brawn gp only having enough budget for 3 chassis for the entire season, while other teams had double or triple that amount (mclaren had 8), and Button and Barichello had to drive an entire season crash free, and not only did they (mostly) succeed but they won the constructor's and driver's title that year, with Button running in the same chassis the whole season.

Yes they made poor decisions when it came to hiring certain people eg paddy lowe but you can’t blame the low budget on the Williams family especially when the sport prior to the cost cap was “pay to win”. I kind of feel like, if you don't have the money or resources to build a really good all round car that's fast everywhere, it's not a bad thing to focus on one thing and do that really well. Previously Williams had a car that was nowhere at most tracks but a monster at Monza or Silverstone because it had crazy top speed. Even if they were miles off everywhere else, they could specialise in a few circuits where they knew the car's strengths would enable them to get a really good result. Now they're just kind of beige everywhere, maybe a bit faster overall than last season but at the expense of that explosive pace they had at power tracks. Instead of finishing 15th or 16th most weekends and then getting 7th or 8ths when they hit a track that worked for them, they'll now be 13th or 14th everywhere. Which is good in that over a season their average finishing position will be higher... but 13ths and 14ths don't pay points, and the money is divided up based on points.

Albon has had 2 crashes this year, with one of them being his fault. The Australia crash was estimated to have cost $500K in damage repairs by James Vowles. It's safe to assume that the repair costs for the Japan crash will also be similar. So Albon has caused a maximum of $1 million in damages. Meanwhile, Sargeant has had 1 crash this year, which, according to Williams, damaged the floor, front wing, all suspension, and cracked the gearbox as well. All of these components had to be replaced, costing around $600-800K, so less than Albon's current cost. However, considering the fact that Logan caused almost $4.3 million in damage last year compared to Albon's $2.8 million, and the fact that most of the former's incidents were objectively his fault, Albon's cost-per-point from 2023-2024 overall comes down to $140,740 per point. Meanwhile, Logan's total comes down to nearly $5 million per point. I think it's safe to say that Logan has cost the team more than Albon and has provided less in return. And I am sure that will play a part in contract negotiations.
