The Brown Widow Spider Invades Southern California

The Brown Widow has established itself in North America alongside the notorious Black Widow. Both can deliver a painful bite. Find out what it looks like, where it came from, and whether or not you need to run screaming.

I work in an area that's pretty industrial. There are black widows everywhere, since we don't have many pedestrians to notice or disturb. In the last two month, however, these Brown Widows have been taking over. At first I thought they were young female Black Widows or male Black Widows, but they're definitely Brown Widows. They seemed to appear over night. They're so identical to Black Widows that it's hard to imagine they're superior, but they seem to be taking over all the spots where I once saw Black Widows. They have really beautiful markings, and their coloring alone might account for their population boom, making for better camouflage. Still, I'll be sad if they entirely replace the classic Black and Red widows. I know that both spiders prefer quiet secluded areas. The fact that I'm already seeing brown spiders out in the open, where I've never seen black ones, suggests that there are even more than I imagined.

Saw my first brown yesterday under a window sill in my front yard. It had 7 small spiky eggsacs. I knew they existed, but never have I actually seen one. I get so many black widows, that I know what their eggsacs look like in comparison. I've been a spider geek since I was a kid, so I was happy to see the brownie.

I live in Southern Alabama, and the other day when I took out the trash I found a brown widow with it's egg sack and messy web right on my trash can handle. It had made it's web in the indentation of the handle. I guess that means that there are more around here I suppose.

OK, I am a science geek with an interest in spiders and will be the first to admit that the fear most people have of them are un-warrented. However, the advice given between 4:25-4:40 on this video is very irresponsible and foolish. You should ALWAYS seek medical attention when bitten by a spider. Especially if it's a Black Widow, Brown Widow or a Brown Recluse. Granted, the likelieness of a fatality is slim but to encourage people to hesitate on getting "medical attention" is just plain foolish

Yeah we live in Mobile, AL and our yard/house has SO many of these. I've killed countless numbers of these brown widows and they keep coming back. The exterminator came out and we bombed (sprayed) the house both with no luck. They aren't aggressive, but they'll make a web anywhere and with a 3 month old daughter it's very disconcerting.

I have found about 10 of these full grown Brown Widows around my place this summer alone. Though I don't know about their being non-agressive. I have put three of these together, one at a time, only to watch them go at each other ten times more agressively than dozens of Black Widows that I've put together before. They are far more agressive against each other than Black Widows are. I hope that's not the case with humans.

I wasn't sure if what I found in my sink was a brown widow, but now I'm sure. I get black widows in my house once in a while, so I recognized the shape right away. I live in New Mexico, so I guess they're officially here.

@TheStrainers According to the research found the Brown Widow is an enemy of the black widow so basically the Brown widow hates the Black Widow. So in a sense they hate competition and are killing off the black widows. So its odd.

And like they said they make their webs on small isolated areas or plants. My friend had like 11 egg sacks underneath his backyard chairs. Never sat on them again.

5:10 lol the city of Pasadena begs to differ the city invested a few millions into replacing all street signs and poles with holes or crevices where a Brown widow could lay web, they were replaced with solid sleek structures to limit real estate the widows could find because it got to the point where people couldn't even take their dogs for a walk with worrying about brown widow webs.

Is it true that as Brown Widow ages, it gets darker in color so it starts to resemble more like black widow? We have couple of them our backyards (under chair, under flowering pots,)
