The Bromance of Captain America and Falcon | Video Essay

Фильм және анимация

Captain America and Falcon are the dynamic duo of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After being orphaned at an young age, Steve Rogers fell in a well and was attacked by a giant American flag, but in his fear, he discovered a new identity, he embodied his anxiety by becoming "Captain America". Every night Steve went out to scare the criminals of New York dressed as a big American flag, but one day while hanging out in a circus, he meets Sam Wilson. As the son of a pair of acrobats, Sam watched his parents fall to their deaths as a falcon flew into their faces as they were doing their sweet acrobatic moves in midday with no net. Seeing the similarity of this event, Steve adopted Sam and gave him the new creative will to develop a new identity; also as his biggest fear "The Falcon".

Alright so in this video I tried a different style where I avoid using any theorists and just dig into some good old fashioned, film micro-analysis work. So let me know if it worked or not. Also if anyone is interested, I did a whole list of my planned video essays for the rest of the year (not including upcoming shows, films that people vote for and random stuff that it'll just write about when I'm bored). Thanks, www.patreon.com/posts/33962797

What I really appreciated was Bucky’s acknowledgement of how he and Steve were ignorant of their decision to give Sam the shield. They saw Sam as worthy and righteous and assumed the world would see Sam the same way. Oblivious to how the world see Sam in comparison to Steve. The pressure of Sam accepting a symbol of a country that doesn’t fully accept him. That moment connected. Especially being a black man in the military.

I also loved that: it shows that the combating racism starts with the virtues of individuals fighting their own biases, but must also go beyond that. Steve and Bucky as individuals never judged Sam on the superficial qualities, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world will show the same grace. Being good as individuals is a start, but it is not yet sufficient. I am reminded of a real life parallel in Elvis Presley and Little Richard. All accounts indicate that Presley personally did his best to offer opportunities and stand up for his Black musical peers using his own stardom as leverage. But the music industry is much bigger than Presley, so no matter how much he personally tried to help, the musical executives and power structures that be still discriminated. Thus like Isaiah Bradley, Little Richard's contributions to Rock/Roll were downplayed and ignored.

Watching Harry Potter and MCU back-to-back makes me notice something. Sam’s dynamic with Steve is similar to Neville’s dynamic with Harry. Sam/Neville not only sees Steve/Harry as a good friend but also a role model and a leader who helps Sam/Neville overcome his insecurity and stand-up for himself. Steve/Harry makes Sam/Neville a better person and a determined hero that’s why Neville deserves to be the one that kills Nagini and Sam deserves to the one that inherits Cap’s shield.

This is why I get annoyed at people who say it's just dumb fun movies. There is just as much symbolism and character studies as any other film in cinema. And the people who don't think it's deep aren't paying attention to the films' complex writing. Which is weird because they pride themselves on looking deep into movies, but don't look deep into these because on the surface they seem like dumb fun.

I always saw Steve's "on your left" at the beginning of Winter Soldier not as teasing at least not in the moment afterward maybe he saw that it might have been a little condescending but when he was saying it I always believed it was him falling back on his training from the 40's where they took that sort of thing very seriously and drilled it into the soldiers head that as you pass someone you warn them that your coming.

I think the MCU has a different definition for sidekicks than other franchises because they put so much depth into their characters, even the sidekicks can stand on their own. Falcon is undoubtedly a sidekicks. He's Steve's most loyal ally, support system, partner and a worthy successor to his title. Everything Sam has done as the Falcon is because Steve came along, but Steve wouldn't be who he is without the support from Sam. He's a sidekick, but he is probably one of the best around.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier reminds me of a DC storyline involving the Flash - Sam does not want to take the mantle of Captain America and try to replace him, for fear of ruining Steve’s legacy - Steve being not only his best friend, but also his hero. However, after seeing John Walker take the mantle (and proving to be unfit)even with the tattered legacy of Isiah Bradley’s abuse, he’ll take it, if only to make sure Steve’s legacy stays intact, but also redress past wrongs - he’ll accept that it’s what Steve wanted, his friend, another “good man”

From day one I've believed Sam would be a fantastic Captain America. The most common complaint about him being Cap is his lack of super-soldier serum, but he's the modern-day Steve Rogers! He gives it his all, he doesn't give up, he'll run in and fight no matter the situation because of the cause and the people he believes in. If anything, the lack of serum is the greatest thing he has going for him. He's gonna take harder hits than Steve, he's gonna have a harder and slower time getting up, but he *will* get up. If frail, sickly, skinny Steve standing up to a bully and saying "I can do this all day" is the embodiment of Captain America, then the ordinary man Sam will be closer to that than the super-powered Steve was during his time behind the shield. He'll take a little longer, but he'll do it.

Yessssssssss. I actually really like Sam Wilson and I think that it is a shame that he is often disregarded because he is not as powerful and flashy as the other Avengers. I think that because he lost to Crossbones in his fight in Winter Soldier people think that he is weak but in terms of writing it made total sense. Why would a retired para rescue be able to fight toe to toe with an elite special agent who was good enough to be paired up with Captain America on missions. Every movie after that he has been an A+ (pardon the pun) wing man. I think that people should really rewatch the movies and focus on what he does and says he is really helpful and has more character and agency to just be seen as 'Cap's Sidekick.' And out of everyone Sam is the one he asked to be with him during Peggy's funeral that is really a great way to show how close they are. What I hate is that if it was Natasha or Tony by his side it would have been a bigger deal but dependable Sam by his side and no one cares. Can't wait for Falcon and the Winter Soldier I hope it really allows Bucky and Sam to come out of Steve's shadow.

Watching this after episode 5 of TFATWS - Honestly love how they have continued Sam's story and his character and never left behind his ability to talk to people. Truly a character to look up to

Another video, another win! I loved Sam's intro and use thru CA:WS, and how he remained that vigilant, supportive, and capable friend to Steve thru the rest of the films. Looking at how Endgame concluded, I am surprised Steve reacted how he did when Bucky got dusted (an old friend he'd spent days with since WWII), but we did not see any kind of reaction to Sam's dusting, a new friend he'd spent recent years with and he has complete faith and confidence in. That is a deleted scene I want to see!

Thanks! And its only about two hours a day for 3-5 days, but the recent videos it takes a total of around 5-8 hours accumulatively, because I've written specific scenes for analysis in the essay script itself, so it ended up way easier to edit!
