INFO: Kyuss was one of the definitional metal bands to come out of the desert rock scene back in the late 80s and early 90s. Instead of the staccato riffs typical of metal at the time, they created more groove based metal that borrowed more from psychedelic rock and blues. It was quite outstanding at the time and they quickly grew in popularity in just a few short years. They released four studio albums, but decided to disband in 1996 because of an unstable line-up and artistic differences. Many of the original members went on to join and create new bands. But Kyuss resurfaced under other band names in the future, then disappeared again. Sadly, none of the new incarnations of Kyuss lasted very long. But the side-effect of their short-lived presence is the rise of the stoner- and desert rock community. A passionate congregation of bands, scenes, forums and influencers that to this day keep the sound that Kyuss originally created alive and well. In this video i’ll introduce you to the brief history of Kyuss.

    I've been listening to Kyuss since "Wretch".Since then?.. everything Nick,John,Brandt,Alfredo,Scott,& of course Josh has been a part of?...I own an actual hard copy whether vinyl/Cassette/or CD.In my personal opinion none of them will ever top with they did together on"Blues for the Red Sun","Welcome to Sky Valley","...And the Circus leaves Town","Kyuss/QOTSA split EP","Muchos Gracias(The Rhino Disc)....Slo-Burn,Unida(& the Unida/Dozer Split EP),Hermano,The Desert Sessions,QOTSA,Kyuss Lives!!!(short lived),John Garcia Solo Stuff,Vista Chino,Brandt Bjork Solo Stuff,ETC......NOTHING will EVER touch what Kyuss did for ALL of us in the stoner rock world.They're as important as a band like Sleep or Spirit Caravan.....or most importantly OLD Black Sabbath(Josh's guitar rig,electric Ovation he used on those albums,& his playing style will NEVER be achieved again(Even if attempted,I doubt the four O.G. members themselves could accurately reproduce it again in the modern era with the"Soul"the original albums had).

    I've heart other reasons why bjork left Kyuss, it had something to do with Josh Homme publicing the songs (getting it on his name and owning the rights to it) Also he was kinda ruling the band, while bjork started it. Even his Wikipedia entry says so. Josh was not willing to play songs bjork came up with.

  • @Indonesiansurftravel

    @Indonesiansurftravel

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Gene Bone They are both very talented and both very important parts of Kyuss,(Just like stoner rocks lennon and Mcartney) Josh did not write all of Kyuss music. On Blues for the red sun it's close to a 50/50 split in lyric and music credit (odd one by other members), with some amazing songs lyrics and music fully credited to Brant like Green Machine . Then on Sky valley Brant is credited lyrics and music for two songs, again including one of the best Kyuss songs Gardenia These two albums are regarded by many as the best Kyuss albums. Personally i think after Kyuss they have both done good stuff, Brant Bjork's Jalamanta is perfect such a unique album that everyone should own, but apart from that rest of what he has done i kind of so so pretty generic and not really a fan of Fumanchu. Josh went on to do three great albums with QOTSA but IMHO shit went down hill real fast after Nick got kicked out. He also did some interesting stuff with dessert sessions To be fair i think Josh is a better composer of songs, more unique but Brant like it or not is a veyr talented musician and responsible for some amazing Kyuss songs, together they were something bigger than their individual parts. Same with Garcia, IMHO slow burn was as good as anything Kyuss did but the rest of the stuff he has done has been so so. All three together though and they are something special and unique, again just like the Beatles of stoner rock.

  • @Indonesiansurftravel

    @Indonesiansurftravel

    4 жыл бұрын

    BTW. Id expect the real reason Brant left Kyuss was it seemed to become more about Josh, you can see this even with Josh taking over most of control on Sky Valley. Anyway end of the day i think its a good thing they ended after Circus and a good thing Josh stopped them using Kyuss lives name which was tacky, and good thing they couldn't use the Kyuss name. Because it would have ruined the legend of Kyuss. I just wish QOTSA had also hung up their boots after Songs for the deaf and ended on a high note instead of going on to produce the crap they do now. Would have been much better if they had reformed under a different name.

SandWings are a breed of desert-dwelling dragons - it's easy and fun to imagine Kyuss fitting this bill. in middle school a student joined my class because he was held back( had to repeat the year because of his grades). we got along right from the get go and pretty much all the dudes liked him aswell. time passes and we talk about music. i was just really getting into metal. like black metal all day and night. one day he show's me an album and he goes "i guess you might like it but...it's like i dunno ...slower?" and i was like "uhm...ok i just give it a listen. it was summer. i drove home from school on my scooter. sweating like hell enjoying the airstream. i stopped and thought "let's just try that album" i put kyuss - ...and the circus leaves town into my discman. hit play. put on my helmet. the first song passes. i kinda like it. one inch man starts. my life is changed. kyuss is my favorite band ever since. almost 15 years now. i call them the "sabbath of stoner rock" and i am amazed by every other band / project that came of kyuss. josh homme and qotsa (and the other projects like vultures) are amazing. brant bjork's solo stuff is amazing. john garcia had like 500 bands by now (it's kind of joke amongst my friends like "one of those garcia bands"). i loved it all. yet none beats kyuss! hell yeah! stoned meadow of doom :D i am subscribed aswell

    I saw them in Perth, Western Australia in 1993 during the Metallica tour. I didn't know who they were and the blew me away!!! I was so impressed by them and became an instant fan and still am. I actually preferred them to Metallica that night. They were a lot more interesting and even heavier sounding and intense but never aggressive like Metallica were.

    There was an extremely popular comic strip in the early 20th century called the katzenjammer kids about two mischievous German boys in America. I would not be surprised if they got the name from it maybe just liking how it sounded.

    Saw them open for Screaming Trees during the Sweet Oblivion Tour in 92/93.. their back drop was just a moving lava lamp on a screen.. and it was PERFECT.. little did I know.. KYUSS BECAME THE MAIN ACT LOL.. 3 songs into Screaming Trees .. Mark Lanagan and Van Connor got into a fight on stage .. Mark threw his mic down and stormed off stage.. show over ! Lights up!! Soooo.. KYUSS!!! Lol.. was worth it though, and the Trees made up for it by doing a great show opening for Soundgardens 2nd leg of Superunkown tour in Seattle 94

    Cool video. Saw them perform live in Belgium in 1995. I really love Kyuss but I didn't know their first name was Katzenjammer. The correct translation is "cat's wail", we have a simular word for it in dutch called "kattengejank". We use this expression to describe bad music or penetrating sounds. Funny name.

    Hi. I am German/Austrian. „Katzenjammer“ means Sonething More sophisticated. It is Used as a figure of Speech; you use it to describe the coming back to life After a wild Night/ getting sober from intoxication and Realizing what had Happend the Night Before (this feeling is Used to be the „katzenjammer“ Afterwards). And yess; Katzenjammer literaly translated means „catwhine“. KYUSS is Best. thank you for your Attention. Tschüss

    Dude, those quotes from Garcia are from over 5 years ago, and you have them listed as 2019. Vista Chino is all but dead over 5 years and you don't mention that either -- it sounds from Garcia's quotes like they are touring into 2020, but they faded out long ago . . .

    hangover = kater (male cat) (we also call the pain in our muscles the day after training "muskelkater" = muscle hangover) morning cat = morgenkatze. katzenjammer =crying of a cat = the blues you feel after getting sober again. but it is not really a common term anymore

    A few corrections and addendums: Kyuss is not metal. It just isn't. What do you mean by "unstable lineups/artistic differences"? The lineup that Kyuss went out with was established as far back as late 1993-early 1994 and remained the same until the band's demise. I certainly don't see either being the reason for their disbanding other than Josh simply wanting to end it right then and there (correct me if I'm wrong). During the Katzenjammer era, Nick was also a part of the band, just as a rhythm guitarist (which definitely influenced his playing style on bass). Then he left, and in 1989 the band changed their name to Sons of Kyuss and released their self-titled EP in 1990. What's interesting about that release is that only 500 legit copies were issued on vinyl, and, according to a 1994 interview, Josh said that he still had about 150 in his possession. That being said, an unofficial fan-made pressing exists, which as of right now is the only feasible way of owning that EP in physical form. It should also be noted that Dave Grohl became an absolute Kyuss megafan when he saw them live in 1992, so much so that the bought multiple copies of Blues For The Red Sun and handed them out to various artists, including Kirk Hammett of Metallica! Hell, he actually let Kurt listen to it and suggested the third Nirvana album be produced like Blues! Unfortunately, Kurt wasn't exactly a fan (if anything, the impression he got of Kyuss was that of the bullies that had harassed him in his youth). Can you imagine if In Utero sounded anything like Blues For The Red Sun? I certainly would've loved to hear that, maybe in a parallel universe. Also explains how Josh and Dave ended up crossing paths and working on Songs For The Deaf and other projects. Fun fact: Sky Valley was actually written and recorded in 1993, but Brant's subsequent leave put the band in a predicament that they had no way of touring the new album. Apparently, the record label (Elektra, which Dali ended up merging with) was gracious enough to grant them a year's worth of time to find a replacement, which they did with Alfredo Hernandez. Speaking of which, he deserves to be more than just a footnote in Kyuss's story - if anything, if not for him and Mario Lalli, Kyuss would not have been influenced by the band that actually kickstarted the Palm Desert rock scene way back in the 80s - Yawning Man. Definitely worth at least a mention. Interestingly enough, Kyuss has a very strong European following, possibly even stronger than that in their home country, surely in no small part thanks to the band's European tour in 1995, during which they even appeared on German and Italian television! This tour also gave us, at least to my knowledge, the one and only professionally recorded Kyuss gig - Live at the Bizarre Festival 95, an absolute must-watch for any Kyuss fan. The Muchas Gracias compilation was released in 2000. In 1997, they released a split EP with Queens (which is absolutely worth a listen if you want to hear Kyuss's cover of a Black Sabbath classic Into The Void, as well as some other rarities). Ah, the lawsuit situation. I think you got the reason Josh filed said lawsuit wrong. If anything, Josh was absolutely fine with Brant & co touring and playing old Kyuss material under the Kyuss Lives name. What Josh had an issue with was Brant wanting to write, record and release new material *under the Kyuss name.* *Not* Kyuss Lives, straight-up Kyuss. Keep in mind that 3 people own the Kyuss name - Josh, Scott and John. Obviously with a 2v1 outcome, the result was in Josh's favour. Oh, and do look up their Australian gig from 1993 - one of the few recordings of Brant playing the drums. I think that's all? Sorry if I come across as rude, that is not at all my intention. If I got anything wrong, please feel free to correct me. That being said, it's always nice to see Kyuss get more exposure. They're definitely a unique band, one whose short-lived lifespan left an entire legend behind, musically and historically. My third favourite band of all time, and Sky Valley being my second favourite album of all time. So thank you for making this video all the same!

    Lol.....you are missing or got a bunch of the facts incorrect.....if John did own any rights, there would not have been a name change. Brant leaving had a lot to do with Josh making the moves to have sole ownership of everything. Both Scott and Nick were in Kyuss Lives at one point....and Scott siding with Josh says a lot, especially when he was down for all of it to begin with. Josh should not have had issue with ALL the past members, minus Alfredo, wanting to record new material......Mario did the guitar parts justice with keeping within the sound that was Kyuss, which BTW wasn't just Josh and only Josh....his success since those days was not threatened by the other members wanting to embrace the past.
