So this still hasn't answered a question of mine. Did the turbine engine, (which drives the center propeller) have its own engine order telegraph? Because if it did, then it would've been a very rare maritime telegraph with no astern settings, as it couldn't go in reverse.

Yes, you are correct. The Titanic had three propellers: two outer ones driven by reciprocating engines and a central one driven by a steam turbine. The turbine engine that drove the center propeller did indeed have its own engine order telegraph. However, unlike the reciprocating engines, the turbine had limited reverse capability. This means that while the reciprocating engines could operate in both forward and reverse directions, the turbine engine could only operate effectively in forward motion. The turbine engine's telegraph would not have had astern settings, as you mentioned. It could only be set to different speeds for forward propulsion. This design limitation contributed to the Titanic's inability to avoid the iceberg through quick reversing maneuvers, which ultimately played a role in the severity of the collision and the subsequent sinking of the ship.

@@rowan312 My understanding is if the center propeller could go full astern, it would’ve had adverse effects on the rudder, effectively pulling water past the rudder in the wrong direction.

Need to ask, what is the back ships wheel used for?

The "back ships wheel" you're referring to is likely the emergency tiller. The Titanic, like many ships of its time, had a large emergency tiller located on the aft (rear) deck. This tiller was a manual steering mechanism used as a backup in case the ship's main steering system failed. In the event of a failure in the ship's main steering gear, the emergency tiller could be connected to the rudder to allow for manual steering. It was a large, manually operated wheel that crew members could turn to control the ship's direction. However, using the emergency tiller was much more labor-intensive and less precise than using the ship's main steering system. The emergency tiller was an important safety feature that provided a way for the crew to maintain some level of control over the ship's steering in case of mechanical failures or emergencies.

They were used for different purposes. The one at the very front of the bridge with the telegraphs is open & where the helmsman or the driver of the ship usually steer when the ship is about to leave the dock so that the other officers can tell him to ex, avoid that island, watch out for boulders & more that's why it has no doors in the side so that they can easily access it. The second helm or wheel in the back of it where the captain died is used for when the ship is at open sea where the helmsman dosen't need much view of his surroundings & can very much focus on the compass & leave the sea inspection to the look outs in the crow's nest that pole in the bow ( front of the ship.) The third bridge is at the stern ( Back of the ship.) It is in an open space not on an enclosed room with 2 telegraphs one is a normal engine order telegraph & the other one is for docking. Now if you maybe wondering if the ship has 3 helms / wheels why don't they use all 3 of it. Well let's just say it is all connected to one steering gear so turning all of it will be a wasted effort since it wont make the turning of the ship faster.
