No, not mentally challenged. Perhaps a slight Asperger’s? Highly functional. He was so well organized and also so kindhearted, reaching out to the world around him. So, here's my opinion: What kind of...."Person" this "Aunt" must be, to not realize, she will do bigger damage to this Child, showing her, that is "normal" to be involved in cowering Crime of her own Father??.
