The Brass Super Spinner Lathe Project: Part 1 - MSFN

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Part 1 of 2: Introducing the Super Spinner!, a project I made for my grandson, a spin top he can enjoy for years to come.
Link to Part 2: • The Brass Super Spinne...
Made totally from scratch out of brass and 6061 aluminum, I detail how its made, the problems I had and how I overcame them. Using just finger power to spin it….it will spin flawlessly for close to 6 minutes depending on how well you torque this little spinning top. A great How To and DIY Lathe project. I may offer a few versions of this for sale, contact me for details if this is something that may interest you. I appreciate ya!

While growing up in the '50s and '60s we had yo-yos and floor tops. I actually preferred the floor tops, wrap the string, throw it out upsidedown, and watch it spin on a hardwood floor for minutes. If my grandfather had made me one, I would still have it. Hope you grandson treasures it for a lifetime.

That's a cool looking top and great video. I loved spinners as a kid. I remember me and my brother setting for hours seeing who could spin it the longest.👍

Highly recommend drilling a hole in the "60°" tip and pressing in a hardened ball bearing. This will allow the tip to last and not have to be repaired in the future. Because dropping the top onto any surface will damage the turned tip. The machined tops you buy have ruby, carbide or steel ball bearings in the tip.

Hi Richard good to here from you , hadn't herd from you sense you were on vacation and we were discussing the bull nose center. I was thinking that's one heck of a vacation. Lol. But all jokes aside good to here from you again , the grandson sure will enjoy that , I bet he is a lot of fun. I got an AXA QCTP for Christmas and some carbide bits and holders , can't wait to try them out. Got them all put together today and the center high set. But great video will be looking forward for part 2. Hope you had a merry Christmas. And best of luck in the new year.

Good to see ya. It's been a bit.I love to tool brass. It is very forgiving as long as the tools are sharp. Knurling can be a real tricky pain in the heinie. I have never seen a tool like that before. Seems to work great. Great trick with the boring bar. Works and that is all that matters eh. Well sir I will be looking for part 2, eh.

How knurling works.... I still don't understand it and my instructor must've tried to explain it to me about 6 times.. My brain just doesn't understand how you can technically be cutting something yet adding to it's diameter... total mind f*(k it'd be one thing if the grooves were obviously getting deeper but they don't, it's like some sort of Black Magic or something.

  • @MakinSumthinFromNuthin

thanks, lots has been revealed since we last talked, seems like I'm likely never going to have a job again.. I have medical issues I had no clue about. Well one I guessed at, the other.. I had no clue it was a thing and it can be even more limiting than my scoliosis. If you were on facebook I'd tell you to add me on there but.. I've written a couple things on there explaining what's going on. Basically, I've got Chiari 1 Malformation... my cerebellum hangs out of my skull about 6mm. It's ahrd to say what all it restricts but from what I've read it seems most doctors don't want you lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk.. so much for working if that's the case. My vertebrae in my lower back are all calcified with big peaks to try to stabilize my spine too and they are causing me lots of pain, in the last year I've thrown my back out about 9 times, one just from being bent forward reading something off the computer and then leaning back in the computer chair... that's all it took! I'm also now 95% sure I'm somewhere on the autism spectrum... which needless to say makes things difficult. And here in Commifornia I'm on Medi-Cal an most doctors won't take it so getting a proper diagnosis from a reputable source is almost impossible. One "doctor" I talked to told me "people that REALLY have Autism, like REAL AUTISM sit and flip lights off and on for hours and things like that... you aren't that so you don't have it." Seriously that's EXACTLY what he said.... How the hell can you be licensed to help people and be so damn narrow minded? I was so pissed off that I didn't tell him that up until my teens when my dad through it away, I used to lay in my bed for hours at night making my own light show with a Playskool flashlight I had that had colored filters you could turn back and forth.. I used to love doing that! I probably still would if I had it.. Let alone the fact that I can lose myself to erector sets, opening and closing the blades on a carburetor, watching the exposed mechs of clocks... basically anything mechanical.. So yeah, like I said, a lot's happened and been revealed to me. Hopefully we can somehow get me on disability or something so I could finally start doing things for myself.. Whether getting a new truck that won't be breaking on me and gets good enough mileage that I can afford to go places and not be locked away all the time, or to get tools so I can make things just to have something to do.. and maybe sell some of the stuff I make. One thing I want to do is I want to make old school carriage light type porch lights, possibly some with stained glass.

I am sorry to hear about your medical problems Otis :( Hopefully you will be able to get some assistance from the government (disability?) and be able to get your life on track. I am not on facebook but thanks for sharing whats been going on....am hoping you get the help you need, am pulling for you!

thanks. Hopefully I will be able to but having only worked 6 months I don't know that I've paid enough into it to be able to get disability. If I can, I will.. at the very least I'd love to get some tools and stuff, I seriously miss making things, it really does my head wonders to make things. Granted I can't lift up anything very heavy anymore so I'd be limited but I'm sure I could find some projects to do. Maybe find a way to make my nephew a gokart or something. :D (yes I use him in place of my non-existent son)
