The Brand New KIA Soul EV - What It Always Should Have Been?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's video we are looking at another new EV from KIA. The last Soul EV I drove was fun, but seriously hampered by a very low real world range of just over 100 miles. The new car takes the powertrain from the award winning e-Niro, so should be much improved.

Yeah, and it's really easy to change just read the manual or do a Quick google search ;) . Something i would like thogh is a "profile" memory for that, just to choose or connected to the key...well it would cost more but.... :). Have just drove this car as a test in a weekend and really love the hud and it was perfect after adjustment for my length and settings :)

@@ALYDAVIDSON1 I charge overnight using the Octopus Go tariff which gives 4 hours at 5p per kwh. That is enough time to put 29.6kwh into the battery (nearly half a battery) for £1.48. That will add just over 100 miles of range. On a standard tariff, 14.5p per kwh, the same would be £4.29, or £9.28 to fill the whole battery from empty.

Got one on order now. Current price just below 35K. With 2.5K government grant and 1K deposit contribution from Kia, they are becoming much more affordable. Trying to get blue with a black roof, but this colour option has been discontinued. So will only be the black + red roof or white + red roof options before long.

What I find more interesting than even the EV is that the American automotive press really likes the 2.0L petrol model with CVT, more than the 1.6 turbo double clutch version. Apparently it’s one of the best and most fun to drive compact cars on sale in the US. I might have to try one.

Should be mentioned that as far as we know “running costs” for EVs should be much lower than average ICE cars based on “fuel” and maintenance costs. So if you are not leasing a vehicle and plan to have it for 6-10 years you should factor this in to the overall cost of ownership. Still makes it hard to get in to one of these vehicles but if one is able to foot the bill it can pay dividends over time. Way to represent american baseball with the shirt! Janky do thanky

  • @johnkeepin7527

Yes, but the overall costs depend a lot on one's actual use. After all, the upfront cost and ongoing insurance premiums are high (I think this one is in group 34) compared with the alternatives at present.

@@johnkeepin7527 hmm I'm ignorant as to British insurance systems, over here in the states I don't believe its any pricier, but yea if insurance is higher then definitely something to factor in as well. As battery costs (and hopefully weight) comes down and range goes up they are going to become very hard to compete with as an appliance/daily driver. IMO will make old gas powered calls all the more fun, special, and engaging on the weekends

Gotta disagree with you. The Soul's range was just fine for most peoples' daily driver... even with some of the longer commutes in the SF Bay ARea, the *average* would be totally doable. In any case, I'm a soul-a-holic, and so sad that Gen 2 didn't make the States. I've always thought it was superior to Niro; most commentators obsess about looks, but *functionally*, the higher ride, more headroom, better visibility, and huge rear hatch without "bumper lean-over"; those are the most significant features, to me. *Yes* for buttons & knobs. I don't know why NHSTA has allowed touch-screens to become so ubiquitous.

And still we're told that electric cars are the future. Even though (in the UK) you usually need to have your own driveway to own one and charge it at home; and even though for most people it could only be a 2nd car (unless you almost never do 200 miles in a day) - so it's only the future for people who can afford detached houses and two cars. That's not most people. Fair play to James for pointing that out, ~9 min. A £35,000 second car. That's the future for the richest 20% at best.

Last weekend we had the third e-cannonball rally in Germany. The winner drove some 600 kilometers in just under 9 hours in a Tesla Model 3 LR+, a Porsche Taycan was second with just 3 minutes more. In the less expensive class the winner ID.3 needed 9:04 and the second ID.3 9:25 the third was a 2018 Kia e-Niro with 9:42.
