The realism of this show is one of its err charms. I have no doubt Homelander is strong enough to pick up a plane, but they just aren’t built that way. No part of the plane is strong or designed to be grabbed or held that way. He could fly the passengers to safety, but the speed he would have to fly, accelerate, deceleration maybe they would suffocate, broken necks etc… & for him it was all or nothing. A heroic version of him would have tried, saved some but ultimately failed. This is isn’t the comics (I generalise) where he could pick up a building as a single piece without it collapsing under its own weight. You should also put Invincible onto your radar, its animation, so not the Boys, but a great show to react to. Great reaction, again.

I doubt Homelander has the technical know-how to crash-land a plane from the outside by manipulating the relevant plane-parts. Spiderman almost did in homecoming and even then, it was mostly just steering the crash. Even if Homelander thought to try something like that, it's something he could very easily screw up; which he will *not* be seen doing.

@@zachmoyer1849 doubtful. As mentioned above, the wings aren't designed to hold the weight of the airplane from such a small surface area, and if you try to act as an engine replacement....... well, let's say, maybe it could be done, if he trained specifically for that engine and plane beforehand, but even then, you'd need someone behind the controls to manage the other engine and the aerodynamic surfaces. As is, the most likely result of just winging it, is inducing a spin, or a stall, and that would just cause the plane to either disintegrate midair if he keeps holding on it, or just crash.

the issue with the plane is NOT whether he was strong enough. Homelander is stronger than Maeve. While on the plane, he claimed that if he was gentle enough to carry the plane it would wobble, dive, and crash due to the horrible drag from it flapping around. But if he was strong enough to control it he would punch holes in it and it would break up. Now, that said, it is leave to the analysis of the viewers whether he believed what he was saying or if he planned this all along.

How does he fly then? What is he pushing against? Whatever it is he could have saved the plane. He could easily saved the plane, but he didn't want to. Because that crash was to be used to push the government to get supes into the DoD. With Maeve involved she had to choose a side and skew her moral compass and is now complicit in those deaths which is now a leverage of control as long as she allows it. Take away the dressing of superpowers and this would still be an intersting show.

There wasn’t a way to save the plane. That whole scene is a gag on the common trope from superhero comics where Superman is lifting a whole falling plane, which is nonsense if you think about it for a second just applying high school physics. Applying enough force to halt that much mass going hundreds of miles per hour, with all the force concentrated in the tiny space of a human body, wouldn’t stop the plane; it would shred the hull. It would be like trying to stop a speeding car with a bullet, or by hooking a chain to the bumper. You’d just damage the car. It only sounds like it should work because we’re used to superhero movies that don’t care about real world physics.

It could totally work. Do you know how big a jack stand connection to an aircraft is? About as big around as a small child's arm. One on each wing one in front one in back. 4 points of contact to lift a but the biggest of aircraft. Slowing would not be the problem as he could lift the nose while either destroying the engines individually or have Maeve work the controls from inside. Now, did either one of them know how to fly a plane? No why would they. He only destroyed the pilots yoke and the instrument panel. Do you need that to fly? Not really, but it makes it a lot simpler. With Homelsnder providing lift and Maeve steering they could have landed it. But landing it wasn't the point.

So the plane scene covered a topic a lot of people have been talking about for years. Scenes where Superman just lifts a plane such a 747 would never work. Essentially you're putting all your strength into a point the size of your palms against the entire body of the plane, essentially your hands would just push through the plane. You'd need a huge flat surface and a means to distribute your strength over a large portion of it. Think of it like if somebody held you over them, dirty dancing style, but instead of their outstretched flat palms it was all 10 of the tips of their finger tips at different points.

I mean, anyone talking about it "for years" _after_ 1986 is presumably not a Superman comics reader - been almost 4 decades since John Byrne "solved" it in "The Man of Steel" by basing his powers on a kind of "tactile telekinesis" (basically he extends a field around any objects he touches and that protects e.g. aircraft, people he rescues etc.). Any more plausible ? Not really IMO but it _is_ offered as a solution to the "problem" (of course it's like fighting fires with a water pistol anyway i'd say. In some iterations the guy can literally move _planets_ all because _our_ Sun's electromagnetic radiation is less red than _his_ Sun's - I don't really think pressure = force/area is the bit that makes it all fall apart :).

Interesting that they called it 'Fatal Cunnilingus', when it wasn't the cunnilingus that was fatal, it was the facesittting. But Fatal Facesitting sounds too possible, & Fatal Cunnilingus sounds funny.

RE: The plane: What you have to remember is this is a show that tries to put superheroes into a more realistic context, including physics. If the entire weight of a passenger plane were to be placed on something as small as two human hands, all you'd end up with is two human hand sized holes, and when it got up to the arms you'd have a person-sized hole. Like Homelander said, "I'd just punch a hole through the plane."

"It's like Wolverine but from the wrists." Made me laugh. You wonder how many people don't know that in the comics his claws spring from his forearms and go past his hands. The claws coming between the knuckles was a change for the movies. (The very fact those blades have no place to retract to without making his wrists immobile doesn't seem to bother anybody because all superpowers are just magic.)

  • @doctaflo

they come out of the top of his hands in the comics and between the knuckles in the movies. passing the wrist always bugged me, but in my head canon it’s peristalsis.

I always assumed his claws were the length of his forearm, and sat between his elbow and wrist when retracted, and fully past the wrist onto his hands when extended. Seems like if you could twist his hand far enough back, he wouldn’t be able to pop them out (not sure if that ever came up in the comics or not).

  • @eidolontyr

@@davidmcleod5133 that's basically how they work. of course, all the different artists draw him differently, but his forarms are usually pretty big, and his claws sit between the bones. when he flexes his arm, the claws get pushed out the top of his hands (he has metal there like piercings so his claws don't rip their way out in some comics, hence the "snikt" noise of metal on metal)

  • @doctaflo

    @doctaflo

@@davidmcleod5133 i think you’re right about how long they are, where they sit, and blocking their path via wrist extension (although i bet he could just send them through his palms and make a mess). but if you image search “Wolverine, claws, comics,” you can see the openings on top of the hands, midway between wrist and knuckle. i’m no comics expert, so i don’t know what the canon situation is, but i could imagine the back of the claws moving through and past the wrist via peristaltic action, meaning a series of sequential, concentric muscular contractions down the length of a tube that pushes something through the tube; it’s how we swallow and ejaculate. i mean i guess there could be a single, long muscle from the opening to the back of the claw, but i don’t know if there’s any muscle in real anatomy that shrinks from 12 inches down to basically nothing at full contraction. in any event, i agree, the wrist would have to be close to neutral to pass the claw.

In the comic, the main characters are all using Compound V from the start, I believe, in order to be on the superheroes' level. It's a big change for the show, because they don't have that equalizer. Really, it does help you root for them more, since they're more of underdogs. As with every video of yours, I recommend the movie Imagine Me & You, as well as Zsazsa Zaturnnah.

Homelander didn't need Maeve to save the plane and people. He could have supported the plane from underneath and brought it down he just didn't want to. He claimed "what was he supposed to stand on to lift it" when Maeve suggested that but if he needed something to support him to lift something while flying then how does he lift Maeve with him up to the plane and back. That just shows that he didn't want to because he decided to use their deaths after accidentally blasting the cockpit for their effort to get into the military.
