I wish Mart Crowley were still alive to see this film version be released. It's great that he makes a small cameo in the bar scene. I also wish Natalie Wood were still with us - for many reasons - to speak about her views of this historic piece of art that she helped motivate and inspire Mart to create. She was a great support to him, and without her encouragement we might not have ever had the play and the resulting movie, both versions. ❤

As both the child of addiction and struggling with my sexuality under a religion that hated me, I saw myself in most of these characters. A lot of people are lucky enough to not experience these things now or view it as cliche, but I've had these exact conversations with my closeted friends, been in panic attacks only to be offered a friend's anxiety medication because we're all medicated for the same reasons. I'm glad I found this movie.

Josh Knoll I saw the original movie in 1972 which was alwready a few years old and have seen it about 50 times since and last night I saw the revival on Netflix and it was just as fabulous and I found I was wording everyones scene as I new the entire movie off by heart lol.

I am so happy that Mart got to see this story, his story, told again in a more accepting time, and I am glad he got to receive the praise that he deserved for his work.❤

Wonderful interview! A friend, who hadn’t seen this new version but whom I’d shown the original film, griped, “Why do they have to ruin something that’s already perfect?” As a 68 year-old gay man, I had the privilege of seeing the Friedkin version in its initial release, which I watched many times in the theater, and have watched many times since on DVD. For me, this new take is admirable, a worthy successor, and I want to thank from the bottom of my heart everyone involved, on and off screen. Brilliant work! I have a personal story which goes directly to what the cast discussed about our history as gays. A college friend in of all places Pueblo, CO was the flamboyant “leader” of our own tight-knit tribe of gays. This was 1974. He courageously screened a 16mm print of TBITB in our school’s common room. You could cut the tension with a knife, college jocks standing on the audience’s periphery, scowling, arms crossed, only to walk away shaking their heads in disgust. There was no incident during the screening. But he walked from class the next day to find his VW Bug had been turned onto its roof by the jocks.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Boys in the Band and will be watching it again and again. For me it was a flashback to my first trip to NYC as an 8 year old and a tribute to my Uncle Earl. As Tuck said, gay men today are standing on the backs of those who came before them. Earl Gladstone was my grandmother’s best friend. He was born in, at the time the small Irish Catholic town of Smith Falls, Ontario, in the early 1920s, where everybody knew or was related to everybody. Earl moved to NYC upon completing high school. In his public life he was the head librarian in Asian (Chinese) studies at the New York Public Library. He spoke 7-8 languages. In his private life he would stop off at the bar for martinis on his way home from work. The love of his life and his ‘roommate’ was Nathaniel, who like Bernard in the movie, was black. So I appreciate that a black and Jewish man are in the play. Earl would come home and take off his suit, the way women take off their bras. He would then slip into a long colorful lounging robe (a long mou mou) for the evening. He had a good friend Margaret, who was Chinese. She would take care of his apartment, prepare the meals, do his laundry, etc, after her regular job. His social life consisted of parties with his friends, the queens. Unfortunately Earl saw them pass on, one by one, as AIDS hit NYC. He eventually succumbed to what I was told was, ‘pneumonia’. Margaret was with him until the end. I never saw The Boys in the Band on Broadway so I am so glad it was made into a movie, that maintains the feeling of a play. Kudos to you all. Brillant casting, acting, set direction, costumes, music, dancing... You captured a moment in time. You captured the feelings and emotions of men who could not live a true and authentic life, who could only be free in the presence of each other. I am not alone. There are many of us who had an Uncle Earl. I don’t know if ever imagined a day where there would be equal rights for all and a time when you could marry the person you loved. Embrace it and pray that Amy Coney Barrett is not confirmed as a Justice of SCOTUS.

I had the wonderful opportunity to see this play twice on Broadway meeting all the Boys personally 5 days in raw at stage door! I went from Austria 🇦🇹 to NYC only to watch Matt Bomer and talking to him about the play made my so happy. I never saw a play like this so so deep going and he told my he felt the same. I'm very happy to watch it again.💖♥️🌈💝💗

I find the acting in this version so much better than the original. The actors are in their characters much more and the lines LAND when they are delivered - these people are in the same collective moments and are actually talking to each other. The original confused me and I never "got" it, and I've seen it several times over the decades. I think I was shown more moments this time around that allowed me to actually LIKE these characters and care for them, whereas the original really left me cold - they were attacking each other suddenly without any build-up, without allowing me to glimpse some ideas as to WHY they would be suddenly loud or saying something that was outside of the moment that I was witnessing. This version has a much better flow. Lines are delivered out of the sense of a more natural conversation here, whereas in the original, I found a lot of moments seemed forced and arbitrary. Good director!! Though I do miss the Marlene Dietrich poster...!

This is definitely one, along with Stonewall, The Normal Heart, Pride, MILK, Bent, Brokeback Mountain, Latter Days, and like Charlie said, as the movie reaches a global audience, it joins other movies from other countries, like God's Own Country, Walk On Water, the Wedding Banquet, The Bubble...and many more. I love what Matt said and others echoed, that Mart and others in those early generations invented their own identities and became their own role models, just as many today living in other countries still oppressive as it was, will be remembered as Mart and generations of pioneers are remembered. Bravo! 👏❤️🙏

I saw the original show and I'm looking forward to seeing this re-make!! Knowing Jim Parsons from Big Bang, I look forward to seeing him doing this show. I'm waiting to see him get away from the "know-it-all" character with such an aggravating personality. I've seen a few of the others in short films and on television but I'm not as familiar with their work as I am with Jim Parsons' work. Tuk Watkins was in a short film where he played a man who was obsessed with a past boyfriend and he takes another man on a journey. I think Tuk Watkins did such a powerful job in that and I'm waiting to see how he comes across in this work!!!

I can't wait until 30th September. The boys in the band will be fab ❤️💖

As a Gay man from the Era of the 60's and 70's it was me living my life over again. I liked the idea of telling and retelling my life as a Homosexual living in NYC- I consider myself very fortunate but also very sad that I have lost many of my friends to that era. Players to Mort for doing such a wonderful work of art. There is so much more shit to tell each area of this fucked up country had a Boys in the Band story to tell, some bigger then others but still yet their own story. I am 75 and proud to say I have made it this far.

This movie was made so well.

I liked the movie, but would have LOVED to see a filmed stage revival with this cast. For obsessives, the documentary MAKING THE BOYS recounts Mart Crowley coming to NY in the 1960s with just one script and how nobody wanted to touch it. When it finally premiered, buzz was so hot, there were lines around the block. It follows casting -- which in the 60s could end careers.

Charlie is so cute omg!!!

I absolutely love the first film version from 1970 which is one of my favorite movies. All of the actors in that movie were reprising their roles from the play version rather than being replaced by a big name actor, so it's a *fantastic* piece of history. Everyone should watch it! My hope is that people will want to search out the first version now that the Netflix version is out. I might be a bit too optimistic. I am not in that much of a rush to watch this new version. I don't really see the reason for an update, unless people really can't tolerate the production values of older movies, in this case a fifty year old movie. Does everything need to be re-made? A lot of people say that the movie/play is dated and gay people are not like that anymore or whatever, but it's still *very* relevant. What speaks more to its relevance than people being here fifty or so years later and discussing it? A lot of people see the movie as depressing but I find it very uplifting and hopeful at the end. It asks a question and it is left at that. I don't see any problem at all with femme or sissy gay characters even though they're often seen as negatively stereotypical. What can be offensive is two-dimensional characters played for gags, but here the characters feel deeply human. One thing I don't get is how the original Boys in the Band is seen as dated whereas Brokeback Mountain is not, even though both deal with some of the same issues, including self-hatred, and life in the closet. Why is one representation seen as more acceptable than the other?

I watched first the Netflix version, and was curious to watch the original film, so you are not too optimistic LOL. Maybe the Netflix version was made thinking in a bigger audience, specially now we are living the pandemics, so it could be educational. The new version is kind of "lighter" and the original one is much more dramatic, it is more intense. Also, of course it is depressing how not could be? see a group of men not able to really live their lives just because they are gays? being attached to a over romanticized idea of the "love of their lives" with a straight guy, an impossible love. The original version is not dated, but it shows how was gay life on that time, before Stonewall, before AIDS, before same se marriage.

Loved the movie

I thought this movie was going to get some awards buzz for acting. Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto (scene stealer), and Andrew Rannels were stand outs. I was hoping for more openly LGBTQ actors to get nominated for the Oscars. I think Ian McKellen (2001) and Angelina Jolie (2008) are the last openly out actors who had been nominated for an Oscar recently. Some say Lady Gaga but many doubt her bisexuality including Jolie. John Gielgud (1982) was the first openly gay man to win for supporting actor but he kept it relatively private in fear of his career waning. Still no openly gay, lesbian, or trans actor has won. If we count Jolie’s bi identity as legit, she’s the only out bi actor who won in 1999. * I’m not discrediting bisexuality or pansexuality, its real. I’m only putting it as an asterisk for Jolie and Gaga based on how the LGBTQ community perceived them, what Jolie & Gaga said publicly, and their past relationships/ engagements/ marriages.

The idea though who they marry doesnt mean they are no longer bisexual, it's maybe some bisexuals are more interested in men then women ( for bisexual women). So well even though attraction is there it is often lesser and not well as prominent as who they marry. There are some actresses who date men and women openly though, like kristen stewart

I never saw a play or an original, but why in the name of Alexander the Great I do think Harold will call Michael because it is the rule of the game? I cant help but keep thinking he s really into Michael no matter what things they say each other? It s just Michael doesnt want it

To compare this wonderful film with all the raw emotional scars of the characters due to how society treated the LGBTQAI+ 🏳️‍🌈 community in the 1960s and how they are treated in many parts of the world today to Schitt’s Creek where there’s no homophobia, shows us how different the world would be with acceptance, empathy and love of each other.

I watched first this version of the film, and I liked it. After, I watch the original one. Not so sure if the Netflix version was made for a major audience or because we are in the middle of this fucking pandemic, but it was kind of "lighter" version. The original one was really shocking, I was kind of horrified with the scene when the "straight fiend" attacked the "effeminate" character, instead of jump over the aggressor his friends were scared and helpless, that would happen in 1968, I'm sure it was like that, because it was so difficult to be confident as a gay man. I like both versions, recommend both of them. Great actors in both of them.

Considering the play reflects a slice of gay life, pre-Stonewall, moving it to 2019 would require basically an entire rewrite or new play overall given all that's happened and progressed in 50 years

Now same se marriage is legal which is a fact that you could not even fantasize on that time, what about the room mates and the phone message? any phone operator would even care in 2019 in NYC a message like that, nobody would imagine to make such a racist joke, not even drunk and many other situations. It would be a different story, different everything.

If you have any specific experiences that in any way contradict from the fictional play/movie Boys in the Band, please elaborate. Every article I've come across describing what life was like in 1968, or pre-Stonewall for gay men implies it wasn't easy. Legal discrimination, shame, things like that.

But the truth of these people still is applicable and important today. There are still many of us who can see parts of us there. How they dealt with their situations and how we do are timeless. I get something new every time I encounter this work. (And I first eagerly watched it as a very closeted teen when the movie first came out so it’s been a while )

Nothing will ever outdo the original 70s film.

The remake was completely miss cask. Jim Parsons was a mess. He’s too queeny to be Michael.
