    37yrs ago and still remember it like it was yesterday. Mystical....magical and so beautifully cast. Watch it every year with my own family leading up to Christmas and has become tradition. An 80s gem which I hold dearly.

    This serial is wonderful - in the truest sense of the word. A children's book written by a poet is always going to pretty special, but Masefield's The Midnight Folk and the Box of Delights are the most perfect children's stories ever written (in my opinion). If you have children or grandchildren, curl up on winter evenings with this, and watch together!

    Fantastic! I've got goose pimples just watching it. It takes me back to being seven. Coming home from school in the winter and sitting down watching this with my mum. Ever since being able to get it on video years ago, it's become a ritual to watch it every winter time. Happy, magical memories.

    Loved this. My Auntie taped it for us in 1984 as she'd fallen in love with the radio series in the 40's or 50's..I then bought it on DVD to show my young children a few years back. Robert Stephens gives it 110% ;-)

    Brilliant, we had this and the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and let's not forget Puddlegum in the Chronicles of Narnia... “Very likely, what with enemies, and mountains, and rivers to cross, and losing our way, and next to nothing to eat, and sore feet, we’ll hardly notice the weather.”..."I shouldn't wonder..."

    It's six days till Christmas. That means it's time for the Wolves to be running... I watch one episode a night on the run up to Christmas, every year. I remember the when it was first broadcast in 1984. It's still wonderful.

    I was being facetious; just noting the similarities in the character. As for Colin Baker, "mugging and smugging" was the whole point of his characterization of the Doctor as an alien being. There was, in fact, more than a little of William Hartnell in the way Colin played the Doctor, but with a good deal more bombast. I certainly find him preferable to the hyperactive stringbean who's playing the part now.

    If they were to make a big budget movie version of this, who would you have direct and star in it? My mind goes straight to either Michael Gambon or Ian McKellen as Cole Hawlings, although that may be a bit predictable. As for director, perhaps Guillermo del Toro could infuse it with the dark magic he showed us with such films as _The Devil's Backbone_ and _Pan's Labyrinth_.

  • @lebroy1196

    Not sure I'd agree with Del Toro to direct a film version, his style is more of a dark and adult look at fairy stories, where as Box Of Delights celebrates the magical joy of childhood imagination.

    Personally, I feel like a big budget movie version of Box of Delights would be a waste. This particular serial is relatively obscure from my perspective (granted, I may be completely wrong about that), but those whom I've met that have seen it really enjoyed it for what it was. So there goes remaking the serial. The book's on my bucket list, but if it's anything like the serial, then it has a certain folklore-esque feel to it that Hollywood seems to misunderstand completely. Just look at the Johnny Depp Alice film. Like lebroy said, it's really about childhood imagination. I see del Toro understanding that part, but then he would most likely make it a straight horror movie. I would have thought of Spielberg, but then I saw what he did with Tintin. He was almost there, but just somehow managed to not really touch how Hergé put so much charm into his stories. I guess what I'm trying to say is that some works are best left to be enjoyed as they are, lest their soul be lost forever.

    Are you a telepath? I'm amazed how you're able to say what Mr. B thinks at any given time. Like I said, I've met him, and he's one of the humblest people you could imagine; as is the case with many such people (actors and otherwise), the bombast covers the insecurity. Your hatred is unreasoning. Get rid of it before it consumes you.

    Crucially, and whilst Michael Grade was on record as disliking Dr Who prior to Baker being cast, neither Grade nor Baker have ever publicly acknowledged the personal history between them in that Baker's wife Liza Goddard left him to pursue a relationship with Grade. Although Grade was on record as detesting Dr Who prior to Baker being cast, the personal history in itself cannot be ignored, and must have been a contributory factor in both the original hiatus and Baker's ousting from the role.

    In total disagreement with you, mainly because I've met him. He's a warm, approachable, and (this is the point) self-depreciating gentleman. As for his acting, ask anyone who's heard his Big Finish audios and even former despisers of the Sixth Doctors will tell you they changed their minds. I don't know where your hatred of him comes from, but like all hatred it's unreasoning and claims to know the hate object's very thoughts.

    Love him if you are that easily influenced - personally I think he should never have been anywhere near the part. He tried to emulate and outdo Tom Baker but had neither the charisma or talent. Dr Who would always have been better off without him.

  • @randomdave30
    @randomdave3012 жыл бұрын

    I would not wriite anything for Colin Baker or Dr Who in general, I used to write little stories in exercise books when I was a kid, but that's it Colin Baker does not 'snub' autograph requests - indeed he loves to oblige them because he loves feeling popular and celebrated - an autograph request for him flatters his gigantic ego.

    @cbatt91337 Yes, The Two Doctors was a major disappointment - even when I first saw it at 14, I found it boring. Not Robert Holmes' fault; he was given a brief to write to, elements for inclusion, but it never gelled and there was no real impetus to the narrative - like all the sixth Doctor stories, it was a lot about.... Nothing, really.
