This movie also had a big effect on James Bond movies by resetting spy movies back to basics and removing the convenient gadget trope.

By a strange coincidence I've just binge-watched the original Bourne trilogy (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum) back-to-back a couple of days ago. The story is remarkably solid across all three films and when Paul Greengrass takes over directorial duties with Supremacy the action gets ramped up even higher. Watch the rest of the trilogy, you're in for a thrilling ride.

No love for legacy?
My two favorite parts: 1) the conversation in the diner when Bourne talks about all the things he knows, and says, "How can I know all that, and not know who I am?" That's when I was like, oh yeah, I'm in this, I love it. 2) the complex plan Jason comes up with, only for Marie to get the info they needed in a much simpler way, lol! Brilliant and funny.

Tiny detail in the last scene, you can see Marie kept the red bag and used it as a hanging planter in her shop. Love these movies, but this one in particular. The rest are worth watching for all the twists and turns and action scenes.
The Bourne series is probably one of the best action series to exist. It's so good. And the casting is superb in each movie!
I do hope you continue with the series. If I remember correctly, all of the Bourne movies are pretty solid, even the one centered around Jeremy Renner.

Here's another vote for The Bourne Legacy. My only dis against it is that it tries very hard to be a "Bourne" movie, even though the Bourne character only appears in pictures in the background. I prefer watching it to the third movie; and it's miles better than the cobbled together Jason Bourne movie.

Legacy doesn't count. Matt wouldn't do it because Paul Greengrass wasn't directing, and they were hoping to expand the franchise. I believe that Renner's character was part of the Black Briar program mentioned in the movies.
The original trilogy has some of the best action/chase scenes in film. The last one, The Bourne Ultimatum, especially has some jaw-dropping stunt sequences and fights. You should definitely work your way through the next two.
I actually like this film more than most Bond films. Well done! The young Matt Damon was the perfect choice, and I like that they picked a relatively unknown actress for the love interest.
I thought it was a good time to rewatch your reaction to the first Bourne movie since you posted the KZread version of the Bourne Legacy on Patreon. This was a fun one, all your Bourne reactions are fantastic Jen.
A lot of people didn't think Matt Damon could pull off playing a spy or do fight scenes but he sure proved them wrong.
Hi Jen, really hope you’ll consider watching ‘Run Lola Run’ starring Franka Potente (Marie from Bourne). It’s a great late 90s action movie with a romance at the centre of it. It’s totally unique and I think you’ll love it.

More Bourne 🤩 This is among those films i can watch over and over and not tire of.
The first 3 Bourne movies are all great. The 4th one with Jeremy Renner and no Matt Damon wasn't actually bad, but it wasn't anywhere near as good. One unfortunate side effect of the success of the Bourne franchise was the sudden proliferation of movies with fight sequences that are nothing but tons of quick cuts and shaky cam where you don't have any real idea of what's going on. The Bourne movies use quick cuts and shaky cams for fight sequences that feel fast and dynamic, and they make it work because they don't overuse it to the point that you can't tell what's happening in the fight. They carefully focus shots on the elements that they want you to focus on to tell the story of the fight: like the pen in the Paris apartment fight. Most other movies that jumped on the quick cuts and shaky cam bandwagon didn't do that, and instead of using it to help tell the story, they used it so that they didn't have to spend so much money making stunts and/or VFX shots look good/believable.

IMHO, The Bourne Franchise originates many more pop/movie references than you'd expect, until you look back at it. I hope you enjoy this first great movie that started so much in this action intensive genre.
I'm so happy you're covering this, and I would love it for you to cover the sequels too
Great Reaction Jen! I love this movie. As well as being a great suspense and action movie it touches on deeper themes. I think there's something very appealing and liberating about the idea of not remembering your past, meeting someone you love, having an adventure and starting a new life together.
Yes this is a trilogy. Movies 2 an 3 are very enjoyable also. There is a 4th movie but don't be fooled, it doesn't star Matt Damon and he isn't in it. The whole premise for the "fourth" one is kind of silly in my opinion. While it's plausable CIA would set out to terminate a single asset that's belived to have gone "rogue", the actions taken in 'The Bourne Legacy' isn't even remotely belivable, as the proverbial cat's already out of the bag. There's simply no reason is there's no longer anything left to protect, or to hide at that point. It would just be wasting valuable resources for no reason at all.

6:25 I love this about you Jen, I would have never expected it! When I was a young teen in 2000 the original PC demo came out, I think on a PC Gamer magazine pack-in CD. I remember distinctly the mission is to interrupt a crime boss meeting in a Chinese restaurant. I still distinctly remember finding out you could sneak through the bathroom window, hide your guns inside, go get the disguise of one of the targets and attend the meeting and then excuse yourself to the bathroom and kick the door open and lay waste to the rest of the targets. No other game had anything even remotely like it at the time and I was hooked since. 22 years later and the basic formula still works, the modern trilogy absolutely does the original series justice.

This will likely always remain my favourite spy thriller, period. The thing I like about it is the sense of mystery, the character development, and the fact that it's a road movie in disguise. The sequels kept those basics, but are also a wee bit more actiony. This first film feels so grounded, and not overacted by the two leads, I can rather easily imagine most ordinary people in either Bourne's or Marie's shoes. As part of the more grounded tone, a man like Bourne being a spy and a hitman actually makes sense, since he looks like an average Joe. Even though it's very much an early 2000s story (I still have a hard time believing it's 20 years old, remember watching it when it was new), I feel that the execution is, IMHO, rather timeless. It's like the perfect marriage of an old-school spy film with more 21st century sensibilities. Also, the Mini Cooper chase has to be my favourite car chase in any movie. Taught everyone not to underestimate a zippy little 1960s car. :-)
This is a great film! Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum are both fantastic sequels.
Not enough KZreadrs, big or small have watched this movie. SO glad I found you, and the movies get better with each one. Just make sure you stop after the 3rd one
Great reaction! ♥👍 The Bourne franchise is solid. I'd *highly* recommend the film that was Matt Damon's breakout role, Good Will Hunting (1997). It is a powerful drama with fantastic script and acting. Damon plays Will Hunting, a brilliant but troubled young man slumming his way through life. After assaulting a police officer he is court ordered to take psychiatric counselling or go to jail. He chooses therapy, Robin Williams is the assigned therapist, but he is also battling his own personal demons.
Really enjoying your reactions, Jen. Thank you.
Jen! I love your bookshelf arranged in rainbow order! I'm too slightly OCD that I have to organize everything according to Siri's order and stuff like that, so I can never do anything cool like arranging them by color. LOL
About thirty yrs back my sister-in-law attended the USC Film School. Among her classmates and collaborators during the time she spent there was fellow student Doug Liman. About ten yrs later he was the director/co-producer on "The Bourne Identity". Obviously his academic term came in very helpful.
The Robert Ludlum books that inspired this movie franchise are also really good.
Love the hitman reference. The reason for checking the last know addresses is to .... 1. Possible locations she might revisit. 2. Possible family ties that might provide more info or she might try to contact. 3. Possible pattern of life (meaning...your daily routines..where you go/visit and how often. Which is how you can predict where people will go next and possible points to arrest/capture.) 4. It could lead to other unknown addresses...like leaving a forwarding address with a landlord or contact info
Jason's dive through the stair-well was awesome!
My favorite line from Jen: "Is one of his [Bourne's] skills, also, that he is a barber?" Franka Potente (Marie) cut her action thriller teeth in "Run Lola Run." Check it out!
An Austin Mini as the perfect getaway car? They should make a movie about that! Oh, wait... 😅

The original trilogy are all excellent thriller movies in the same style. The spin-off Bourne Legacy starring Jeremy Renner is also very good and well worth watching for your channel. The 5th, just called Jason Bourne, is a little less good but still worth watching. Julia Stiles has much more to do in the next two and she and Joan Allen are excellent female characters in a genre which often only has them as eye candy. Another excellent reaction, thanks Jen 👍

20:20 - They're literally doing the classic "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" pose. Now that you've seen this, Alien, and Star Wars, you have all the movie knowledge you need to watch Spaceballs. The sequels to this are pretty good as well. They aren't just a rehash of this film, each one takes the story in a new direction, although they're all connected. I hope you'll watch the whole set.
This is one of the few trilogies where each movie gets better.
I was really really looking forward to you starting the Bourne series. Thank you.
About 20 summers ago, the Bourne Saga on film began. Unquestionably one of the best spy franchises. Anybody would want to be James Bond. But for me, Jason Bourne was more my speed. I have the special edition of The Bourne identity with an alternate beginning and ending. The novel series by Robert Ludlum (beginning in 1980, my birth year) showed Bourne as an reluctant hero. With all he learned and knew as an operative, nobody was going to stop the bad guys better than he could. After uncovering each and every conspiracy he faced, peace was the closest thing to victory.
Franka Potente, who played Marie, stared in a movie called Run Lola Run a few years before this role. It's well worth the 80 minute runtime.

This movie gets a lot of stick for inaugurating the era of choppily-edited, handheld, closely shot action sequences, but it's not actually that bad itself. The action scenes are chaotic, much like actual combat, but the movements and developments still read pretty well. Other movies that want the same feel seem to opt more for slow motion or outright having the action happen out of sight. The Equalizer does both, and I imagine Nobody (which I haven't seen yet) probably does as well.
I enjoy your nervous fidgeting. Very fitting for this film.
