It always gets to me how Clive Owen’s character just tries to have a normal conversation at the end. Like these guys are those highly trained sleeper agents, but they are also utterly alone. Like no one knows what they’re going and how tormented they are. So the professor takes the one chance he can get to actually have a chat with someone who might understand him, even if they are literally killing each other. It’s honestly sad that this is the only opportunity he’d get to talk about his headaches.

All the more tragic because Jason is amnesiac and unable to fully relate to him. His last words in the Bourne Ultimatum show that it did have impact. Bourne carried this day forward with him, which is remarkable and poignant.

(did bourne had superpowers where he could smell the gunners and snippers and the difference between the two?) im confused that how bourne figured out that it was a snipper in the forest at a distant place...

I love this scene. I saw this movie for the first time as a kid, and remember being entranced by this. It was such a far cry from all the action sequences I had seen, no shaky cam, no superheroesque fist fights or cheesy one liners. Just cold clean action, a game of chess with tactics. Bourne gets the drop through intellect, not brawn. And then the “bad guy” being just another victim of the system Bourne is fighting. Superb.

That conversation was about how they share programming and they were kindred spirits of sorts even though they had to fight to the death, and now that he's dying, it doesn't matter. I agree they could have filmed the battle to make this guy look better, but I appreciate the character all the same

Sometimes you suffer alone in a very rare sort of way. When you find someone who has suffered through the same thing, it can be easy to just chat even if you hate each other, just because of the loneliness. Just wanting to talk to someone who has experienced what you have.

I like how he respected his final plea for a quiet peaceful death instead of abusing him with more questions.

@@HaiderAliKhan There was a lot that Bourne knew but didn't know how he knew. He understood the likely tactics based on the circumstances as they unfolded and responded accordingly, though he couldn't explain why. We get an example of that when he's at the cafe with Marie and asks her why he knows all the license plates outside or why he knows the weight of the guy at the bar and his likely abilities in a fight.

@@JarrodFrates yes agreed on the part that bourne had capabilities that he wasnt aware of.. as he was shocked by himself beating down 2 policemen near the bench he was resting on, in the 1st half of the movie, but from the viewers perspective how will you justify the confusion of the snipper scene? like ok bourne automatically figured out the location of the shooter because bourne is a brainiac... but how actually would we perceive this event? what should be the logical explanation of it? yes he can do it... but how he did that? is my question..

@@HaiderAliKhan isolated location with flat, open ground which would be difficult to rush aggressively or creep up on, especially considering your quarry. Much better to take a long shot from a distance without risking the element of surprise or yourself?

I like the way the assassins move in these movies. Walk briskly to avoid drawing attention; if you have to run, sprint until you find cover; wait and scan from cover; avoid unnecessary movement or talking. The Bourne movies do well showing brutal efficiency and make other movies look flashy and spastic in comparison.

One of the most tragic, heartbreaking true words I read about was from a Time LIFE history book about WW2. A Waffen-SS soldier was being interviewed by his captors after a concentration camp was liberated. He was the only one not shooting the prisoners so they questioned him. His words chill me to this very day and still horrify me when I learn how effective Heinrich Himmler's goons were at creating monsters. The man had joined a regular detachment of the Waffen-SS after the war broke out. He made a serious mistake that really enraged his commanding officer. The punishment was to be sent to the camps as a guard. He saw the horrors for the first time and demanded to know why he had been sent there. He was told it was punishment for his failures and this would be his job until his c.o. saw fit to relieve him. He told the Allied interrogators that was how the Nazi state created monsters. When they heard the Russians and Americans were getting closer, they went on a killing spree but he had lost respect for himself and refused to kill anyone. They didn't scare him any more. They had, in their quest to make him a monster, only made him see that he was human inside so he told them he was ready to die. He said he doesn't know why they didn't kill him but instead continued shooting the prisoners right up to when the Allies were able to break into the camp. He was not charged with any war crimes and was let go after the war. Sorry, but the story didn't give his name. I thought about the faceless SS guard when I heard the phrase "Look at what they make us give..."

Feel sorry for The Professor here. He's simply a lonely man who hates what he has to do but gotta to do it anyway as he belongs to an organization. When he realizes death is close, he just needs someone to talk to. All this while he missed a company, a friend he can share his problems with. Poignant, super scene.

Wouldn't mind a prequel spin-off about this guy. Clive is a great actor and this character was very interesting with what little screen time he had.

@Simulation algorithm I heard a story that Henry Cavill felt he was too young to play Bond when he was being considered. And at 22 he was probably right. Now at 38 he is ideal for it. Ian Fleming said that he saw Bond as being about 35. I hope he gets the role.

In a scene of less than three minutes, the actor went from being despised to eliciting great empathy. Neat trick if you can do it.

The first one is still great. I love the methodical way he went after this dude.

Indeed. Expertly done. Explosion for distraction/smoke cover, power walked so the sniper would mentally 'set' his pace and lead accordingly, then abruptly runs across the open area to throw him off and force him to abandon his position for fear of being outflanked through the trees. Then aggravates the birds so they fly around and watches the section they call out warnings above and avoid, knowing it would flush him out of his hunkered down position and leave him vulnerable. Fuckin' brilliant.

I was active duty army for a good portion of my youth, "look at what they make you give" cuts deep for me. Infantry, which aside from being the trigger pullers does all the cool guy stuff that the other jobs try and make civilians think they do. That cool guy stuff just came at the cost of my body (back and knees utterly messed up, can't kneel for more than a few minutes at a time), my mental health (depression, anxiety) and my family, the amount of birthdays, weddings and funerals I missed over the years is unforgivable. That is the most realistic enactment of death ever. These men were bent on fighting, then when the professor realizes he's a goner, he wants to relate to Bourne and be personal and talk about headaches and their experiences. His eyes go wide and just fades away.

2:19 That conversation would deeply haunt and affect Bourne throughout his journeys. It was really well done. Though it was a short appearance Clive did a great job.

My interpretation (for what little it is worth): When the Prof sees Bourne circling, he knows he's been made so he tries to reposition and setup an ambush in the field. The field conceals his position and has good vision on the treeline, where he expects Bourne to be going through as he makes his way to the Prof's previous sniper spot. Prof doesn't know what kind of weapon Bourne has, only that it is powerful and he may have seen it is a long weapon. If he had a long range rifle, setting up an ambush in the trees could have backfired (spotted and sniped), hence why he goes into the field. The trees are silhouetted against the white snow, so hiding up there would make him easier to spot than in the field. Field also give 360 concealment, while trees would be directional, and he can't be confident of what direction Bourne may approach. Maybe not a good decision, but there is reasoning for it. Bourne realises the field is a good ambush spot, and fires his shotgun to scare the birds. I think the intention of this is both as a distraction and when the birds begin to come back down they will avoid the area where the Prof is, so his position will be revealed. The Prof then realises he's been made again and is at a severe disadvantage, and attempts to flee. He ditches the rifle to minimise the weight, but doesn't want to run because it would make noise and give away his position. Note that Bourne gets him from behind, so the Prof is moving away from where he expects Bourne to be coming from. Bourne's strategy paid off, but it may have also backfired. For example, if the Prof had instead chose continue the ambush expecting Bourne to rush into the field from behind, he would probably have gotten him. The Prof probably thought that Bourne would be more cautious entering the field, or wait for the birds to come back down, and thus thought he could get away.

Yup that's what I figure also, the professor needed to get out of that field ASAP so he only kept the pistol.

This is the scene that I always remember from the whole series. It’s the one I always think about. The guy doesn’t know why is out there to kill another guy. He just goes and does it but gets shot. And dies in a field. Alone, confused, and out of sorts. He kind of has the moment toward the end where he gives a look of “why am I here” and “how did I get here” and “is this the end?”

Exactly, It serves to show the people who gave the orders simply kept sending the agents and, If they failed, they would Just forget they even existed and send other agents to finish the mission. The agents really were pretty much alone, after all.

My skull above my left temple was crushed, about three inches across from hitting the berm above the windshield after launching from the back seat. Contused brain tissue was removed and my head swelled up to three times its normal size from the fluid. Eventually the swelling went down, and 5 months later a tantalum steel plate was sutured in with wire staples. That was 49 years ago. Today I have migraines, sometimes lasting for days, making life intolerable. What he means by "Look at what they make you give." is they are assassins, who if they are successful, kill people. If they are unsuccessful they die. In between they have no life, no relationships, and a brain at war with their bodies. I can relate to the latter.

Spot on, mate. The way Bourne spooked the birds to give away his antagonist’s rough position was also very smart. Don’t get why Owen would ever have gone to the handgun though with Jason having the range advantage of shot spread.

The only thing that could have made this clip more realistic is if Bourne had been uncontrollably teleporting all over the field and the woods and then professor insta-snapped to zoom with his pistol or sniper rifle and one shot dropped him from 100 yards due to superhuman auto aim capabilities! This clip is so unrealistic, i mean, he one shot drops the professor with a shotgun!! So unrealistic!!

Great actor and a haunting performance. The series continues with four more movies but those last words capsulize the theme of the Bourne saga: "Look at this, look at what they make you give."

incredible this has almost 20 years and still keep that great suspense flavor ...... Great movie.... the trilogy as whole is a masterpiece.

"Look at what they make you give" in The Bourne Supremacy Jason says the same at the end before jumping.

I use that line often because I’m a divorce attorney.

I find it interesting that the enemy assassin is so calm and seemingly in little pain as he's dying from the gunshot wound. It's almost like his death is something of a cathartic release for him

Leon The Professional, The Jackal, Special Ops. Jack Reacher (not Reacher, the sniper) all have snipers with glasses, as well as Bradley Cooper in American Sniper, who wears Wiley X sunglasses.

It's so odd going back and watching clips of movies you saw as a kid and recognizing actors that you are now familiar with. Never knew Clive Owen was the professor.

One of my favorite scenes of the triology, Clive Owen's character got so little screen time and still was so well done you want more

What a tight, sharp and effective thriller this movie was. Much superior to Greengrass' shaky sequels

Maybe in the second half of Supremacy he is a little more reckless as he heads to Russia but he displays incredible moments of on the spot improvisation to situations. Using vodka as a weapon and to disinfect his wound. Shooting the tyres on Kryil's car to turn the tide. The bridge scene in Berlin is fantastic.

As a huge Bourne fan...totally agree. I like the 2nd and 3rd (I won't talk about the 4th, or is it 5th...that was a mess) But I liked how the politics was in the background for the 1st one. Quite refreshing. Once she dies in the 2nd...it just became a brilliant action thriller...and nothing more. There was definately a romance to the first one. Both literally, and figuratively.(

I like how he took off the scope when shit got close quarter. While it looked like he didnt even have back up iron sites, I think it's safe to assume that someone of his skill level would be pretty accurate point shooting.

It's because of muscle memory, you knew which angle from your perspective to the target Or as simple as how you move a glass of water perfectly into your mouth while you watching tv

It’s a surprisingly powerful scene.

The way Bourne outflanked The Professor was basic military tactics 101.

This movie is a directional masterpiece. Many directors took notes from this movie.

This scene perfectly shows why Jason is the best at what he does. Clive Owens character had such an advantage in this situation; sniper, higher ground, element of surprise, and Bourne turns the tables in the blink of an eye. So fucking cool!

Your glasses are too loose, you can get a tighter frame, but be careful it's not too tight, or they'll gradually indent and reshape your head.

Too bad that Clive Owen didn’t get the 007 role (anyway Craig is good too), but Clive looks more James Bond 🍸

matt Damon is my fave actor, and a big part of that is due to these series of films. I respect him so much as a person and actor. Him and ben wrote and acted themselves from obscurity into stardom, fortune and fame. This was also the film I went to see with the first person I ever met and dated. Special film for me which takes me back to better times in my life when the world was better.

I forgot how tight the first Bourne movie was, really amazing film making

These movies were awesome the whole film leads up to this action sequence and it is so calm and cat and mouse. I love it.

One of the best hunter/prey scenes

clive owen is more tragic than any shakespearean play in this dying scene, i almost felt physical pain watching him die... this is the best dying scene i have eve seen

You should watch the death scene on the plane in "The Grey". You won't be disappointed. Portrayed amazingly well.

What a fantastic line: "Look at this, look at what they make you give..."

What I love about stuff like this is you have two very big characters. And they come together and talk. In a very human way they relate with issues. Camaraderie among enemies via suffering. One man dealing with crippling loss of Memory while the other man is dying rapidly and in shock as he looks at the ravaging his body just underwent. Yet, the conversation ensues anyway. “I’m dying” and “wait, don’t die I have questions” it’s almost humorous but tragic at the same time. Amazing work! I love how he talks about his headaches like they’re comparing how their recipes always fail in the kitchen the very same way - eeeexcept it’s fallout from overly strenuous lifestyle and major stresses on their body that manifest in headaches, light sensitivity, etc I watch the Bourne films like once every 3 months!

Clive Owen is highly underrated and underused. Thought he would've made a great Bond, James Bond.

look at that explosion, love that shockwave. Practical stuff is always believable and sync, CGI stuff is always beautiful (and looks lame mostly).

Not really. The CGI is used for the smoke when the sniper is looking at the gun's scope. That's well done CGI. And the shockwave might be CGI for the actor's safety. ILM was involved in the visual effects of this franchise.

CGI never looks beautiful to me. CGI only "looks" good when it's unnoticeable, when it complements practical effects like icing on a cake.

The action shots are brilliant in this movie,I could watch it over and over.

The most moving and impactful scene of the entire series: it reminds you of Wilfred Owen's Strange Meeting.

I really need to properly rewatch these films now that I'm an adult. I was pretty young when I watched Identity and Supremacy.

“Look at this. Look at what they make you give.” the final words from a dying Professor is still something that Jason Bourne (actually David Webb) reflected on and later on Jason Bourne (actually David Webb) repeated it to Paz in The Bourne Ultimatum.

Terns in the middle of the winter - LOL. I also think the fast forwarding of Bourne running is quite fun 😝

Such a great scene, very raw and personal. Depth to both characters

I still think about this scene from time to time.

This scene felt so real even if they weren't assassins and were normal people you could feel the emotions between them. No anger no viciousness just trying to understand. Beautiful movie beautiful series.

Yeah, except that the guy was in agony and just talked like they were chatting at the mall.

Anybody notice how Bourne asked "Where's the weapon?" even after we see the pistol fly away from the Prof's hand? Then Bourne finds another pistol behind the Prof. So badass...

I love it when shows, movies, games, etc cut the use of music for specific scenes/moments. It can add a lot of tense feelings when all you hear are sound effects and voices. Sometimes, less is more.

Absolutely the best of the three (no I don’t consider the fourth film worth mentioning). The first had far better camera movements and set ups. I was not a fan of the shaky cam of films two and three

I saw the 4th and couldn't work out what it added to the series. And it hasn't lived long in my memory

Yeah as a kid - this is where the genre "Action Thriller" became my obsession

I come back to watch this scene every so often. It's just great writing. Owen's line about what they make you give - the subtlety of the writing and the performance is just beautiful. Owen has a history of these great scenes - the Caveman screaming match in Closer, the final scene (and many others) in Children of men. Should be way bigger, and play and old and pissed off Bond.

It's such a sad as well as intense situation....

Love the realism with the shotgun. Old school double barrel with no rubber on the butt plate has a helluva kick and Damon did good making it look bulky and powerful.

Had a friend that was a USMC vet. He always said it was his favorite movie quote. He took his own life 3 days ago last week. Is it the world or just the algorithm that fucks with us?

This scene just hits different after watching the trilogy

I love this scene because at this point the Professor has had enough of the job and begins to see the light just like Jason did in Ultimatum on the roof top where he was talking to the other agen he let live and thus he saved him too more than likely from certain death.

I was in an alcohol rehab when I read the Jason Bourne trilogy. They had an excellent library and it was a great way to escape from the rehab! It was just too many times I saw the sunrise with the Jason Bourne book in my hand! I never saw the movies

Yeah I thought that the professor's moves were a little unbelievable for an assassin. The first time I watched it I was just in awe of Bourne's Lateral Thinking skills and never thought about how the professor should have countered it with his own lateral thoughts. Maybe it would go unnoticed or wouldn't develop Bourne's guile in a noticeable way had the Professor countered his moves effectively.

One of the best films in my lifetime.

Clive Owen. Just so freaking amazing. One of the best actors of this era. Always watchable. Always a stand out when he plays smaller roles too.

Of all the movie credits they give Matt Damon in the description, THE GREAT WALL??? WTF?

The professor probably thought Bourne was running away so he gave chase. The suppressor looked huge and would probably hinder him on the move so he took it off. He lost sight of Bourne when he reached the bottom of the hill into the field and was trying to gauge which way Bourne went, when Bourne shot up into the air the professor realized HE fell into a trap and HE was the one being hunted now since the birds would avoid him when they landed thus giving away his position. Since his life was at that point in critical danger, he had to get out of the open field ASAP, of which he then ditched his heavier rifle and bag for a lighter/more mobile personal defense pistol. Little did he realize that Bourne was already waiting for him to come within his visual zone...This makes the most logical sense...

The birds had nothing do to with where they landed. It was the noise Bourne wanted. The Professor positioned himself in a clear field with clear lines in all directions if he raised up. He was listening for Bourne to know which way to shoot. The professor couldn't hear Bourne enter the field with the birds.

I love when the music cuts out and you just hear the eerie quiet as they try find each other

That was nice of the guy with an automatic weapon to stop firing after a two second burst. Also nice of the trained killer to fire behind his running target. Super super nice of him to switch from a machine gun to a hand gun in an open field with great distances between the target after standing up to reveal himself cuz, ya know, birds… instead of laying down in cover for as long as it took even night fall to try again or crawl away or lie in wait for the guy with a long barrel shotgun to have one shot at you

Bourne was in control from the beginning! The other guy didn’t stand a chance 💯

Really felt bad for the guy, even after 20yrs... Nothing but pain, suffering & loneliness... 😢

Tony Gilroy’s screenplays (uncredited) were fun to read!!
