THE BORDER PRINCES: A Land of Shifting Powers - Warhammer Fantasy Lore Overview

Фильм және анимация

In the Border Princes, fortunes rise and fall as quickly as the sun, and the only constants are change and challenge. It is a land not for the faint of heart, but for those with the courage to face its trials.

In your case, what would be your approach to survive, thrive or even exploit the region in your favor? Thank you all for watching our lore overview into the Border Princes! A special shoutout to Anthony L. for his narration for this particular episode and to Skrubasauras who acted as support cast for this one. Maintaining some level of sustainability would be one of many hurdles, but definitely top priority. Doesn't matter how tall the walls are or what mercenaries you have in your pocket, if you can't feed them or keep animals watered, or have some sort of income, you're done before you even start. Two, defenses. Starting out, I'd probably rack up a debt trying to pay guards and build defenses. But, assuming we're able to get up and running, I don't mind if I wind up having to pay them back for the next ten years. This goes back to point one, sustainability. Having ways to keep mercenaries supplied and healthy will go a ways toward keeping them around, and treating them right will earn loyalty and reputation. With luck, I might even convince some to become soldiers under my own flag. Three, coordination. I have soldiers, defenses, and supplies to last for years. Now comes the problem of gold. Coordinating with some of the other Border Princes would go a long way. Not only could lucrative trade deals be made that would benefit our economies and keep a steady stream of revenue, but it would also improve relations. Incentivising these other Lords to cooperate and band together would make my survival and theirs as well a lot more attainable. Some of the other fledgling Lords would likely see me as a potential conquest or threat, but with my self-sustaining resources and well-paid (and hopefully) loyal soldiers, that can be addressed. Eventually, if things go well enough, I'd try to convince the ones I'm on really good terms with to try and form some sort of alliance or confederation. With that secured, and with our accrued armies and resources, we would hopefully be able to repel any orks, undead, beastmen, or other greedy Lords. Ambitious? Yes. Practical? Also yes. Likely to wind up with my bones bleaching in the sun? Of course. But this is Warhammer, and you're not going to become anything of note in this world if you don't court death at least once.

Might make for a nice place for the empire to expand to and turn it into a new province. Work with the nearby dwarves to build defenses that’ll hold off the green skins. Instead of relying on blackfire pass every time.

The Border Princes, Tilea, and Estalia always interested me the most out of all the factions. Especially the Dogs Of War. It likely stems from me playing the Southern Realms mod back in Total Warhammer 2. There's just something about carving out your own place in the world, fighting tooth and nail with a ragtag army made up of people and races from all across the world, both New and Old, all together, that I find so appealing.

But would that be a good idea for the empire? They have chokeholds via the mountains, imagine how many troops would have to devoted to garrisoned the region which is so close to where the largest concentration of greenskins outside of the darklands lies. And of course Boyz like a good krumpin so imagine what happens when a domino effect of orc tribes arrive looking to fight.

These places were founded by exiles, outlaws and would be rulers. Any 'cooperation' with the Sigmarite Empire would be regarded with trepedation and suspition. It honestly wouldn't take much for the population to get riled up and accusations to be leveled at the Sigmarite Empire trying to 'take over'. Regardless if it is true or not. Besides it is more interesting like this, rather then the whole place being another Sigmarite province.

@@visitingforgefather5997 You know, that's very fair. I let my love for Franz and the Empire overwhelm that sense lol. I truly believe Franz would never try to militarily take over the region, but I wouldn't be so sure about his successors taking advantage of whatever roads he built. You're right, it is more interesting to let them be - just wish they'd be more of a powerful buffer state lol

A RPG set in the Border Princes territory would be awesome! Good lore reasons for why you have nothing at the start and need to build up troops, base, trade routes, resources,+++ And you could have a multitude of different Warhammer races, mercenary companies and heroes. Also could easily focus on smaller battles and not "world will be destroyed" stakes in this setting, wich could be a lot of fun :)

  • @TheBookofChoyer

Definitely, I like to think that not all battles should be "the biggest battle you've ever seen" or the End of the world if X is not stopped. Smaller conflicts and even personal-level stories help make up the world and give it a sense of scale. An RPG set in the Border Princes would be cool indeed 👌

This is a wonderful setting for a Battle Brothers-like game. Maybe something sitting in between BB and Mount&Blade, where you can lead something around 5-6 "regiments" or up to 500 units. One could run almost any starting regiment, with some factions being locked into only raider role, some adding harasser merc or "plain" mercenary role to it and some allowing to become prince in the end.

Such a divided and chaotic place. Proof that division leads to disorder. Though none of them would be willing to hand their power over to another.
